IEM Cologne 2027’s playoff has eight teams in a single-elimination championship bracket: four best-of-three quarterfinals lead to two best-of-three semifinals and a best-of-five grand final. The semifinal losers also play a best-of-three match for third place. The top four teams from each Stage 2 group qualify, but ESL has not yet published the exact quarterfinal seed pairings.
How the eight-team bracket is laid out
The title path is straightforward: win your quarterfinal, then your semifinal, then the grand final. A loss in either quarterfinal or semifinal ends a team’s chance to win the championship.
Quarterfinal 1 ─┐
├─ Semifinal 1 ─┐
Quarterfinal 2 ─┘ │
├─ Grand final — champion
Quarterfinal 3 ─┐ │
├─ Semifinal 2 ─┘
Quarterfinal 4 ─┘
Semifinal 1 loser ─┐
├─ Third-place decider
Semifinal 2 loser ─┘
The third-place decider is separate from the championship path. It gives the two semifinal losers one more match to determine third and fourth place; it does not send either team to the grand final. ESL lists the decider before the final in the event schedule. ESL’s IEM Cologne 2027 event page and its October 1, 2026 announcement describe the format.
What happens in each round?
| Match | Series | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Quarterfinals (four matches) | Best of three | Winner advances to a semifinal; loser is eliminated from title contention. |
| Semifinals (two matches) | Best of three | Winner advances to the grand final; loser plays the third-place decider. |
| Third-place decider | Best of three | The semifinal losers play for third and fourth place. |
| Grand final | Best of five | The semifinal winners play for the championship. |
In a best-of-three, a team must win two maps to take the series; in a best-of-five, it must win three. ESL’s event page specifies these series lengths for the 2027 playoff.

How teams qualify—and what is known about seeding
Stage 2 has two groups of eight. The top four teams in each group advance, producing the eight-team playoff field. ESL says seeding will be based on the first available monthly Valve Regional Standings publication in July 2027. The event page does not yet specify how those seeds or group finishes map to quarterfinal opponents, so a particular seed-versus-seed pairing should not be treated as confirmed.
When and where the 2027 playoff is scheduled
The announced playoff dates are August 12–15, 2027, at LANXESS Arena in Cologne. Quarterfinals are scheduled for August 12 and 13, semifinals for August 14, and both the third-place decider and grand final for August 15. ESL describes the playoff as a four-day, eight-team event, with the two additional quarterfinal matches played in front of the arena crowd. Match times may change; check the official event page for updates.

How the 2027 format differs from the 2026 Cologne Major
These are different editions and event labels. ESL’s May 28, 2026 announcement for the IEM Cologne Major 2026 described an eight-team single-elimination playoff, with best-of-three quarterfinals and semifinals and a best-of-five grand final; its announced schedule did not include a third-place decider. The 2027 IEM Cologne event is an ESL Pro Tour Championship event and adds that match, with the playoffs scheduled across four days. See ESL FACEIT Group’s 2026 Major announcement for that earlier format.
