The new Legio Custodes miniatures broaden the range, but the available official previews do not establish a points-efficiency or battlefield-performance ranking against existing Horus Heresy units. The clearest comparisons are their stated weapons, unit sizes, and army-list access: Aquilon Terminators offer two distinct weapon pairings, Venatari can be armed for ranged or melee combat, and Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities appear as Troops in Games Workshop’s loyalist Allied Detachment example. For profiles, points, and rules, use Liber Custodes: The Forces of the Emperor and its applicable supplements—not Warhammer 40,000 Codex statistics.
What the new Custodes releases add—and what they do not prove
Games Workshop’s 2026 previews introduce new plastic Legio Custodes miniatures and identify Liber Custodes: The Forces of the Emperor as the Horus Heresy rules reference for them. The releases add models and equipment choices to the range; a miniature reveal by itself does not show how a unit compares mechanically with an existing choice. That requires reading the current Horus Heresy Army List Profiles, including points, unit composition, special rules, and weapon profiles.

The sequence of previews helps clarify what “new” means in this context. Games Workshop’s January 2026 reveal introduced new plastic Legio Custodes miniatures and named Liber Custodes as the army-rules reference. Its April preview described standalone releases including Venatari and grav vehicles. In September, a preview of Aquilon Terminators again pointed readers to Liber Custodes for their Horus Heresy rules. These announcements establish releases and rules references; they are not a complete mechanical comparison of the units.

That distinction matters because Games Workshop’s September 2026 Adeptus Custodes Codex overview spans both its Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy ranges. Its count of 27 datasheets is a combined-range figure for that Codex overview, not the number of units in the Horus Heresy army list. Likewise, the Toughness 7 and 5 Wounds per Custodian Guard model mentioned in a 2026 preview are Warhammer 40,000 datasheet details; they are not Horus Heresy profile values and should not be used to judge Guard Sodalities in a Heresy army. The Codex overview also says that Guard Sodality squads are capped at three models before Leaders, but that is a 40K datasheet detail, not a Heresy unit-size rule.

The Codex overview calls several units new to that Codex, including Aquilon Terminators, Venatari, the Telemon and Contemptor dreadnoughts, Gyrfalcon Jetbike Sodality, Pallas Grav-attack, Coronus Grav-carrier, and Caladius tanks. That wording describes Codex coverage, not necessarily when a unit first existed in Horus Heresy or whether it is a new Heresy rules entry. Use the Heresy books to establish that game’s unit list and rules. In particular, a combined-range Codex list is not a substitute for checking whether a named vehicle or dreadnought has a current Heresy profile, what its options are, or how many points it costs.
How the named units compare on the evidence available
The official previews support a comparison of model configuration and loadout themes. They do not provide a shared set of profiles and points for comparing these units against each other or against existing Custodes choices. The table therefore separates what the previews establish from what must be checked in the Horus Heresy rules. It is a starting point for deciding what to look up, not a tier list.
| Unit or group | What the official material establishes | Useful comparison question in Horus Heresy |
|---|---|---|
| Aquilon Terminators | Two equipment themes: lastrum storm bolters with Solarite power talons, or adrathic combi-destructors with Solarite power gauntlets. Their Horus Heresy rules are in Liber Custodes. | Compare the current profile, points, weapons, special rules, and unit options with other available Custodes units before deciding which loadout or unit better fits a list. |
| Venatari | A six-miniature kit can be fielded as one large unit or as two squads of three. Equipment options distinguish kinetic destroyers for ranged combat from Verutum lances for melee. | Check the profile and army-list rules for the unit-size options, weapon effects, points, and any movement or deployment rules. The miniature preview does not establish relative damage or efficiency. |
| Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities | Games Workshop’s loyalist Allied Detachment example places these Sodalities in Troops slots. The 40K Codex preview says older Custodian Guard models can still represent the renamed Guard Sodalities. | For Heresy list-building, verify the current entry, slot, unit composition, and rules in the army books. The older-model statement concerns miniature continuity, not a comparison of Heresy profiles. |
| Vehicles and dreadnoughts | The 40K Codex overview names the Pallas, Coronus, Caladius variants, Telemon, and Contemptor variants among its listed units. | Establish each vehicle’s Heresy profile and points in the relevant army-list material before comparing it with an existing vehicle or dreadnought. The Codex list alone does not establish Heresy battlefield performance. |
Aquilons: two different weapon pairings
The Aquilon preview describes a choice between paired ranged and close-combat emphases, rather than a general claim that one configuration is better. Lastrum storm bolters are paired with Solarite power talons; adrathic combi-destructors are paired with Solarite power gauntlets. Those combinations give a player a concrete starting point for comparing intended targets and preferred engagement distance, but the preview does not state weapon statistics, costs, or special rules. A reliable Heresy comparison must use the weapon and unit entries in Liber Custodes.
When checking the profiles, compare the whole package rather than isolating a weapon name. A loadout’s value depends on its points cost, what the unit can legally take, any relevant special rules, and the targets it is expected to face. The available preview does not supply the numbers needed to declare either Aquilon option more efficient than an existing Custodes unit. It also does not give grounds to assume the ranged pairing is automatically better at range or that the talon pairing wins every close-combat comparison: the relevant rules and costs decide those questions.
Venatari: one kit, two unit-size arrangements, two combat emphases
The Venatari kit contains six miniatures, which Games Workshop says can be fielded as one large unit or as two squads of three. Its equipment choices offer kinetic destroyers for ranged combat or Verutum lances for melee. These are meaningful list-building axes: a player can consider whether they want a single larger unit or two smaller ones, and whether the unit’s intended job is primarily ranged or close combat.

The kit description does not state what those unit sizes cost, whether all options are available in each configuration, or how the weapons perform in Horus Heresy. Nor does it establish movement, deployment, durability, or special rules. Check the current Army List Profile for these details before treating the miniature configuration as a rules choice or judging it against another fast or close-combat unit. A six-model box count is useful for understanding the miniatures included; do not treat it on its own as proof of the legal maximum unit size or the points cost of either formation.
Guard Sodalities: the clearest stated allied Troops role
Games Workshop’s allied-army explainer gives Custodian and Sentinel Guard Sodalities a specific place in its example: both are Troops choices in the Custodes Allied Detachment. This is the clearest supported slot comparison for the units discussed here. It tells an army builder where these units appear in that example, not how their profiles compare in cost, staying power, or battlefield output.
Recommended Free Tools
The 40K Codex preview’s note that older Custodian Guard models can represent the renamed Guard Sodalities is a separate, practical point about models. It does not make the 40K datasheet statistics applicable to Horus Heresy, and it does not by itself supply the current Heresy entry or its options. Players with existing models can treat that statement as reassurance about miniature continuity for the Codex naming change, while still checking the Heresy rules for their actual army list.
Vehicles and dreadnoughts: verify the Heresy entry unit by unit
The Codex overview names several vehicles and dreadnoughts, including the Pallas Grav-attack, Coronus Grav-carrier, Caladius tank variants, Telemon, and Contemptor variants. That makes them useful names to check while consulting the Custodes army books, but the overview is not a Heresy vehicle comparison. It does not provide the current Heresy points or profiles needed to evaluate them alongside established units.
Do not assume that a listing in a Codex overview means a unit is newly introduced to Horus Heresy, has the same rules in both games, or occupies a particular Heresy slot. Check the relevant Heresy profile for each candidate. A meaningful comparison should include its battlefield role, unit or vehicle options, weapon loadout, relevant special rules, and cost. The same discipline applies to the Telemon and Contemptor variants: their names in a 40K overview are leads for a rules check, not proof of a particular Heresy role or performance.

Can Legio Custodes be allied into a Horus Heresy army?
Games Workshop describes a route for including Legio Custodes in a loyalist Horus Heresy army through an Allied Detachment. In that example, a Shield Captain occupies a Command slot, while Custodian or Sentinel Guard Sodalities fill Troops slots. Games Workshop also states that the Custodes were loyal to the Emperor and are not available as a Traitor ally in the example.

Treat this as an example of army-list access, then verify composition against the current army books and the event pack for the game you are playing. An event may specify which rules publications or updates to use. The allied-army article does not give a points comparison between a Custodes detachment and other ways to fill those army roles. Nor should the example be read as a complete list of every unit or detachment restriction: consult the current list requirements before finalizing an army.
Which rules books establish the comparison?
Liber Custodes: The Forces of the Emperor
Games Workshop identifies Liber Custodes as the rules reference for the named new miniatures, including Aquilon Terminators in the September 2026 preview. Use it to check the unit’s current Army List Profile and the rules for its equipment. This is the necessary starting point for comparing Heresy units; a 40K Codex profile or preview is not a substitute. For any claim about a unit’s points, composition, slot, special rules, or weapons, use its actual Heresy entry rather than extrapolating from the kit description.
Legacies of the Age of Darkness: Legio Custodes
The Third Edition Version 1.0 Legio Custodes Legacies PDF supplements Liber Custodes with Expanded Units. It is not a standalone rules source: the document says it requires both the Age of Darkness Rulebook and Liber Custodes. It also distinguishes Core and Expanded classifications, but says that classification alone does not decide whether a unit can be used in a Horus Heresy battle. The document’s own wording is explicit: “Both types of Unit may be freely used in any Horus Heresy Battle, and this category does not affect their availability as part of an Army or Detachment or the Rules for their use during a Battle.” Check the individual current Army List Profile for a unit’s classification and rules.
In practical terms, do not stop your check at the word “Expanded.” The PDF’s classification is not, by itself, a ban on using an Expanded Unit, and it does not replace the need to read that unit’s profile. Confirm that you have the right books, locate the current entry, and then apply the army and detachment requirements that govern your list.

Use the rules for the same game and edition
When comparing units, keep all inputs within Horus Heresy. A sound comparison draws profiles and costs from the same current army-list material and uses the rules edition relevant to the game. Mixing in the Codex’s combined datasheet count, 40K statistics, or a miniature description can produce a superficially precise but invalid comparison. If an update or event pack changes which material applies, use that current direction consistently for both units.
A practical method for comparing a new unit with an existing one
Once you have the current profiles in front of you, compare the candidates against the job you need them to do. Avoid treating a dramatic weapon name, a new model, or a single profile statistic as a complete measure of value. A fair comparison asks the same questions of both choices and uses rules from the same edition.
- Confirm the game and source. Use the current Horus Heresy army books and any applicable updates or event pack. For Custodes, start with Liber Custodes and consult the Legacies supplement when an Expanded Unit is relevant.
- Check list access and slot. Record whether each option is a Core or Expanded Unit, which detachment or slot it can occupy, and whether it meets the requirements of your intended list. Do not infer availability solely from the Core or Expanded label.
- Compare unit size and composition. Note the legal minimum and maximum, model options, and any configuration choices in the Army List Profile. For Venatari, the kit article’s six models and one-large-unit-or-two-squads-of-three arrangement is a preview claim; verify the current Heresy entry for the actual rules and costs.
- Identify each option’s battlefield job. Compare any role stated or supported by the rules—such as a ranged or melee emphasis—without assuming a unit’s intended job guarantees performance. Consider what the unit must accomplish in your list.
- Compare weapons as rules, not names. Check the profile for each weapon, including its relevant characteristics and special rules. For Aquilons, compare the lastrum storm bolter and Solarite power talon pairing with the adrathic combi-destructor and Solarite power gauntlet pairing using their actual Heresy entries.
- Account for mobility and durability. Read the movement, deployment, defensive, and other relevant profile rules for both choices. Do not import statistics from a 40K datasheet or infer them from the miniatures’ appearance.
- Compare total cost and opportunity cost. Use current Heresy points for the exact unit size and equipment. Then consider what else those points and the relevant army-list slot could buy. Without this step, a claim about efficiency is incomplete.
- Test the choice against your intended targets and mission. A ranged loadout and a melee loadout should be judged against the jobs your army needs, not ranked in the abstract. Apply the same assumptions to both units and account for the rules used in your game.
This method supports a real comparison once the profiles are available. The official material summarized here does not include a complete set of comparable costs and statistics, so it cannot settle which new or existing Custodes unit is strongest or best value. It can, however, identify exactly what to compare: role, unit size, list access, mobility, durability, weapons, special rules, and points.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can be concluded—and what remains open
- Supported: Aquilons have two previewed weapon pairings; Venatari have ranged and melee equipment options and a six-model kit described as one large unit or two units of three; Guard Sodalities appear as Troops in Games Workshop’s allied-detachment example.
- Supported: Games Workshop directs readers to Liber Custodes for the new miniatures’ Horus Heresy rules, while the Legacies PDF supplies Expanded Units as a supplement rather than a replacement.
- Not established by the previews: a complete points table, profile-by-profile ranking, relative durability, damage output, movement or deployment comparison, or universal best choice among the new and existing units.
- Not a Heresy conclusion: the 27-datasheet total and the Custodian Guard Toughness 7 and 5 Wounds figures belong to Warhammer 40,000 Codex material and must not be carried over as Horus Heresy facts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the new Custodes units automatically better than existing Horus Heresy choices?
The official previews establish models, loadout themes, and some army-list context, but they do not provide a comparable set of current Heresy profiles and points. To judge relative value, compare the relevant Army List Profiles in the same edition, including cost, unit composition, weapons, mobility, durability, and special rules.
What are the Aquilon Terminator loadout options described by Games Workshop?
The September 2026 preview pairs lastrum storm bolters with Solarite power talons, or adrathic combi-destructors with Solarite power gauntlets. It does not provide the rules statistics or costs needed to say which pairing is more effective; check the entries in Liber Custodes.

Can I build one large Venatari unit or two smaller squads from the kit?
Games Workshop describes a six-miniature kit that can be fielded as one large unit or as two squads of three. The kit description also distinguishes kinetic destroyers for ranged combat from Verutum lances for melee. Check the current Heresy profile for legal unit sizes, equipment restrictions, and points.
Can I use Legio Custodes as allies in a Horus Heresy army?
Games Workshop’s loyalist Allied Detachment example includes a Shield Captain in a Command slot and Custodian or Sentinel Guard Sodalities in Troops slots. It says Custodes are not available as a Traitor ally in that example. Check the current army books and your event pack for the composition rules that apply to your game.
Does an Expanded Unit classification mean I cannot use that unit?
No. The Third Edition Version 1.0 Legacies of the Age of Darkness: Legio Custodes PDF says Core and Expanded units may be used in any Horus Heresy battle and that the category does not itself determine availability in an Army or Detachment. The PDF supplements Liber Custodes and also requires the Age of Darkness Rulebook; check each unit’s current profile.

No. The Toughness 7 and 5 Wounds figures and the three-model squad cap before Leaders in the September 2026 Codex preview are Warhammer 40,000 datasheet details. Use the Horus Heresy Army List Profile for the Guard Sodality’s Heresy rules. Games Workshop separately says older Custodian Guard miniatures can represent the renamed Guard Sodalities.
Does the 27-datasheet figure describe the Horus Heresy Custodes army list?
No. Games Workshop’s September 2026 Codex overview gives 27 datasheets across its combined Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy ranges. It is not a count of units in the Horus Heresy army list.
The Bottom Line
The strongest supported comparison is about choices, not rankings: Aquilons offer two weapon pairings, Venatari offer ranged or melee emphasis and a one-unit-or-two-squads kit arrangement, and Guard Sodalities have a stated Troops role in Games Workshop’s loyalist allied example. For a genuine matchup or points-efficiency judgment, compare current Heresy profiles in Liber Custodes and the applicable Legacies supplement. Keep the Codex’s 40K statistics and combined 27-datasheet count out of that comparison.
