Valve’s October 2025 Counter-Strike 2 update opened a Trade Up Contract route to knives and gloves, and the change was followed by a sharp repricing of CS2 items. Reports put the drop in aggregate market value at roughly $1.7 billion, but that figure is a tracker-based estimate of inventory value—not $1.7 billion in confirmed cash losses or completed sales.
What changed in the October 2025 update?
Valve expanded Trade Up Contracts so players could use higher-tier Covert items to pursue knives and gloves. Under the new rules, five regular Covert items could be exchanged for a regular knife or gloves from collections represented by the inputs. Five StatTrak Covert items could be exchanged for a StatTrak knife. Valve’s update notice describes the mechanic.
That created a new route to items that had previously been much harder to obtain through trade-ups. It also changed the market’s expectations about future supply: if knives and gloves could be produced from Covert skins, both the potential output and the value of the skins used as inputs mattered to prices.
What does the $1.7 billion figure mean?
It is an estimate of the change in the aggregate market capitalization—or notional value—of CS2 items, calculated from tracker prices and inventory listings. It does not mean that $1.7 billion in cash was paid out, that all listed items sold at their displayed prices, or that players collectively realized losses of that amount.

The estimates are close in broad scale, but they are not one audited measurement series: tracker methods and snapshot timing differ, and prices moved quickly after the update. Gaming News’s October 25 analysis characterized the headline decline as a mark-to-market snapshot of listed inventory, which assumes items could sell at their listed or tracked prices. That is different from measuring completed transactions or money actually lost.
Why did knives, gloves and input skins move differently?
The update changed expected supply, not just the rules for a single item. Knives and gloves became possible outputs from trade-ups, which could put downward pressure on some of those items. Covert skins became potential inputs, making them more useful and potentially raising demand for particular skins. As a result, movement was not uniform across the market.

Ars Technica reported that one rare knife’s minimum price fell by more than 50% during the first day after the change. In a contrasting example from its October 23, 2025 report, the P90 Asimov’s median Steam Marketplace sale price rose from $10 to over $100. These are dated examples, not current prices, and they use different measures: a minimum listing price versus a median sale price.

- Check what is being measured. An aggregate market-cap estimate is not the same as sales volume, completed transactions or realized proceeds.
- Check the snapshot date. Immediate post-update estimates capture a fast-moving market, not a lasting price level.
- Compare like with like. Knife and glove prices may react differently from Covert input skins, and a lowest listing is not interchangeable with a median sale price.
The cited October 2025 reports document an abrupt repricing after Valve changed the trade-up mechanic. They do not establish current 2026 item values or provide a reliable present-day price forecast.
