Borderlands 4’s Ordnance slot is a shared slot for grenades and heavy weapons. Equip one of those types, then use it in combat; it recharges through a cooldown or charge system rather than drawing on ordinary weapon ammo. Heavy weapons no longer take up a standard weapon slot, so your choice of Ordnance shapes your combat approach without reducing the number of regular guns you can carry.
What can you equip in the Ordnance slot?
Ordnance is one shared slot, not a separate slot for grenades and another for heavy weapons. It accepts grenade items or heavy weapons such as rocket launchers. The game’s official gameplay deep dive describes the system as covering both categories.

How does Ordnance recharge?
Ordnance returns through a cooldown or charge-based system, not by spending the ordinary ammunition used by your guns. Gearbox Senior Project Producer Anthony Nicholson summarized the distinction in an Epic Games Store interview: “Ammo is irrelevant here.” That describes the system’s general approach; it does not establish one identical timer or charge rule for every item.
The official descriptions do not give a universal cooldown duration or a complete current catalog of Ordnance items. Check the in-game item details and current update notes for the behavior of a particular item.

How should you choose between grenades and heavy weapons?
Think of the choice as a combat-style decision. Nicholson framed it as whether you want “a bunch of homing transfusion grenades” or “some type of homing rocket.” Grenades and heavy weapons offer different ways to complement your regular guns, but the available official descriptions do not establish that one category is universally stronger or deals more damage.
| Ordnance choice | Example in the producer interview | Loadout consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Grenades | Homing transfusion grenades | Choose grenade effects that complement how you use your regular guns. |
| Heavy weapons | A homing rocket | Use heavy-weapon fire as your Ordnance option while keeping your standard weapon slots for regular guns. |
Why does the shared slot matter for your loadout?
Because a heavy weapon occupies Ordnance rather than a standard weapon slot, you can carry more regular guns than if it took up one of those slots. You still make a meaningful tradeoff: the shared slot can serve a grenade-focused approach or a heavy-weapon approach, so choose the item type that best fits the rest of your loadout.

Can patches change how an Ordnance item works?
Yes. Item behavior and balance are version-sensitive. For example, the Version 1.6 notes (published April 29, 2026, updated July 2, 2026) mention grenade Ordnance and heavy-weapon interactions. The October 23, 2025 update notes also record a change to a grenade Ordnance item. Consult the latest notes when you need a specific item’s current behavior rather than relying on an older description.
