If you have an in-store preorder, GameStop’s general guidance says the remaining balance is due when you pick it up, and you have 48 hours after release to collect it. The event’s hours, entry rules and walk-in availability depend on the specific store and launch.
Is your local GameStop holding a midnight release?
Check for a current announcement from the exact store and for the specific game or console. A preorder alone does not establish that the store is participating or that it will open at midnight. GameStop’s 2025 Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 event illustrates how hours and eligibility can be specific to one launch: that event was advertised for 9 p.m. Pacific on November 13, 2025, corresponding to midnight Eastern on November 14, and was limited to in-store preorder pickup.

Ask the store about the event’s start time, when to arrive, where to line up, whether it uses tickets or timed entry, and whether walk-in customers can buy anything. GameStop’s general preorder and pickup guidance does not set those local event procedures.
Do you need a preorder?
A preorder is the more reliable way to have a copy reserved, but it does not automatically mean you can attend a midnight event or that the event is open to every preorder holder. Follow the specific event announcement and confirm that your reservation is linked to the participating store.

Walk-in availability is not guaranteed. In a February 22, 2017 Nintendo Switch launch announcement, GameStop said walk-in supply would be limited. That is a historical example, not an estimate of inventory for a current release.
How do payment and pickup work?
In-store preorder
GameStop’s in-store preorder guidance says you can add funds to your deposit before launch; the remaining balance is due at pickup. The general pickup window is 48 hours after release. If you miss it, the store may release the reserved copy to another customer, while your deposit remains in your GameStop account. Contact the store if an event-specific instruction differs or is unclear.

Online preorder
GameStop says online preorders are generally charged about one week before release. Check online or app orders under Account → Order History; for a reservation made in a store, contact or visit the store where you placed it. The payment path differs from an in-store deposit, so check the status of your actual order rather than assuming a balance will be due at the counter.
Buy online, pick up in store
For a buy-online, pick-up-in-store order, follow GameStop’s pickup instructions: select a store with inventory, then wait for the “Ready for Pick Up” email before going. Bring the order confirmation and valid ID with a name that matches the order. Those ordinary pickup instructions do not define midnight-event admission or queue rules.

What if you cannot get there at midnight?
For an in-store preorder, GameStop’s general rule is a 48-hour pickup window after release, so midnight attendance is not inherently required to collect the reservation. Confirm the release time and the store’s instructions, especially if the event announcement sets separate conditions. For an online pickup order, wait for the readiness email and follow the instructions for that order.
Midnight pickup or regular-hours pickup?

Check these details before you leave
- Whether your specific GameStop is participating and the confirmed start time.
- Whether the event is for preorder pickup only or also permits walk-in purchases.
- Which store holds your preorder, what you owe, and whether the order is ready.
- Where to queue, when to arrive, and whether the store requires a ticket or ID check.
- Whether the store has announced a delay or other change to event or pickup arrangements.
GameStop has held midnight events before, but past examples do not establish a schedule or inventory for a new launch. Its 2025 Call of Duty announcement and 2017 Nintendo Switch notice are dated examples; for a current release, rely on the participating store’s latest instructions.
