The Political Machine 2024 turned the 2024 U.S. presidential contest into a playable strategy simulation. In its October 30 update, Stardock adjusted the game’s issues and voter enthusiasm; the Trump-versus-Harris scenario was described as close, with a slight Trump edge. That was a dated in-game result, not a verified forecast of the election.
What the October 2024 update changed
Stardock Entertainment called its October 30, 2024 release the game’s “final major update.” It revised the political issues and voter enthusiasm to reflect the publisher’s view of the race at that time. The official announcement is available on The Political Machine’s Steam Community page.
Stardock CEO Brad Wardell said, “We are seeing a lot of movement on voter enthusiasm.” He also said the contest was “solidifying around a handful of key issues such as inflation, abortion and the border.” These were the issues emphasized in the game’s October framing, not a definitive account of every voter’s priorities.
How the game represented the changing race
The update’s description points to three distinct parts of the simulation: issue support, voter enthusiasm and turnout. Issue support concerns which topics shape the contest; enthusiasm represents how energized voters are; turnout assumptions affect how that support might translate into votes. They are related, but they are not interchangeable.

- INTENSE ELECTION SIMULATION: Experience the thrill of a presidential campaign. Players take on roles like Ruling Party, Opposition Party, Centrist, or Independent Candidate to compete for the presidency . Manage your campaign across 5 regional boards including Seoul-Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Gangwon to secure the most votes.
- UNIQUE "VOTE BAG" MECHANIC: Victory isn't guaranteed just by being popular. The game features a dramatic "Vote Count" system where support tokens are placed in a cloth bag. Tokens are drawn based on voter engagement levels, meaning even a leading candidate can lose if their supporters don't show up to vote.
- DEEP STRATEGIC GAMEPLAY: Engage in 3 distinct phases: Rally, Political Action, and Media . Use Political Cards to spotlight local issues, unite with minor candidates, or attack opponents . But be careful—aggressive moves accumulate "Risk Cards" that can cause you to lose core supporters during the Media Phase.
- HIGH REPLAYABILITY: No two elections are the same. The political landscape changes every game with randomized Political Orientation Cards and Priority Policy Cards placed on regional boards. Detailed rules for 2, 3, and 4 players ensure a balanced and exciting experience for any group size.
- WHAT'S IN THE BOX: A complete strategy game set including 5 Regional Boards, 1 Vote Count Track, 4 Candidate Cards, 50 Political Cards, 30 Risk Cards, wooden components (Meeples, Cubes, Tokens), a Cloth Vote Bag, and a comprehensive Rulebook . Playtime: 45 min. Ages: 14+.
Stardock also said it tried to model the effect of early voting. Wardell described the difficulty of accounting for voting spread across multiple days: “It’s been challenging to have the game’s underlying model factor in voting that occurs over multiple days.” The announcement does not provide a detailed formula or quantify how much the early-voting adjustment changed the result.
Why North Carolina mattered in the simulation
Stardock described its AI Trump-versus-Harris run as close, with a slight edge for Trump. Wardell said the model highlighted North Carolina, and that the team was investigating why it treated North Carolina rather than Pennsylvania as the linchpin state. That detail illustrates how the simulation identified a pivotal state; it does not establish that the state was objectively decisive or that the game accurately forecast the real result.

What the sales figure says—and what it does not
In a September 4, 2024 GamesBeat interview, Dean Takahashi reported Wardell’s statement that August sales were 27 times the game’s May 2024 debut-month sales. Wardell linked the increase to changes in the race and the simulation after Kamala Harris replaced Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee. GamesBeat relayed the figure; it did not independently audit the sales data.

The Trump edge belongs to a specific simulation described by Stardock in October 2024, using the publisher’s contemporary framing of issues, enthusiasm and voting patterns. The announcement and interview do not provide an independent validation study or an accuracy statistic. Treat the result as an example of how the game modeled a fast-moving campaign, not as evidence that it could predict the election or as a forecast for today.
