Short answer: the “new Harry Potter RPG” is most plausibly a reported second installment of Hogwarts Legacy, but it is not yet a fully announced game. An August 13, 2026 account of a Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder letter mentioned a “second installment of Hogwarts Legacy” without supplying a title, story, setting, platforms, release date or gameplay details. Hogwarts Legacy therefore remains the only documented game against which a comparison can be made.
What is actually confirmed about the new game?
The evidence currently supports a sequel report, not a complete game reveal. Warner Bros. Discovery was reported in August 2026 to have referred to a “second installment of Hogwarts Legacy” in a shareholder letter. The available account is sparse: it does not identify the project’s official name, launch window, systems, protagonist, historical period or mechanics.

Setting and timeline: the clearest contrast is still unknown
Hogwarts Legacy deliberately predates the familiar heroes
The original is an open-world action RPG set in the 1800s, in the Wizarding World introduced by the Harry Potter books. Its period places the player decades before Harry Potter’s school years and avoids making the established book characters the center of the campaign.
Narrative lead Moira Squier explained that the team wanted “a time period where there were no heroes, no Newt, no Harry – it’s you.” The decision gives the player room to create a student whose choices drive the adventure instead of following a known protagonist’s biography.
The sequel’s era has not been announced
The shareholder-letter report does not say whether the second installment will remain in the 1800s. It could use another historical period, revisit the same era from a different viewpoint or introduce a new location, but none of those possibilities has evidentiary support yet. A comparison that labels the sequel “another 1800s Hogwarts game” would be treating an assumption as a specification.
Protagonist and story: one is playable now, the other has no confirmed lead

Hogwarts Legacy casts the player as a Hogwarts student who enters the school with an unusual connection to ancient magic. The central story expands from that mystery into a threat to the wizarding world. Because the character is created by the player, the campaign can frame the student’s identity, house and relationships as personal choices rather than fixed canon.

The official description also emphasizes companions and relationships. These interactions support the school-life side of the RPG while the main plot escalates beyond classroom exercises.
No confirmed protagonist for the new project
Nothing in the reported disclosure identifies a student, adult wizard, established book character or custom avatar for the second installment. It is therefore impossible to say whether character creation, house selection or a new ancient-magic premise will return. Those are useful questions to watch for in a formal reveal, not features that can be listed as confirmed today.
World exploration: a known open world versus an unannounced map
How the original world is organized
The first game combines the Hogwarts castle with an explorable region outside it. The official game description names Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and the surrounding Overland. Free roaming lets the student move between school activities, settlements, wilderness areas and story missions instead of progressing through a sequence of enclosed levels.
This structure is important to the role-playing fantasy: Hogwarts is not merely a menu or a backdrop for battles. It is a navigable place with lessons, secrets, side activities and social spaces, while the wider countryside supplies room for exploration and encounters.

What cannot yet be compared
The reported sequel has no published map, location list or traversal description. There is no confirmation of a larger castle, a different school, new regions, faster travel, mounts, boats, multiplayer areas or a denser activity schedule. The only defensible comparison is that the original has a documented open-world design and the follow-up’s world design remains unannounced.

The official page describes a broad set of activities beyond combat. Players learn spells, brew potions, grow plants and care for magical beasts. House sorting establishes the student’s school affiliation, relationships add social progression, and skills provide a way to develop the character over time.
These systems create several overlapping play loops. A player can prepare through crafting and cultivation, improve abilities through skills, pursue relationships and then take those choices into exploration or story missions. The game’s identity comes from combining those loops rather than from treating Hogwarts as a conventional action-game hub.

The shareholder-letter account does not mention spell lessons, potion crafting, beasts, plants, houses, companions or relationship mechanics for the new installment. A sequel may retain familiar systems, redesign them or replace them, but the current evidence does not establish which course it will take.

“Play your way” in Hogwarts Legacy
Combat commentary from the official Wizarding World interview describes a flexible approach summarized as “play your way.” Troy Johnson discusses combining spells and using plants and potions during encounters. Stealth and the Dark Arts are presented as additional approaches, so the player is not limited to one fixed attack routine.
In practical terms, the original’s combat decisions involve selecting spells that work together, deciding when preparation items are worth using and choosing whether to confront enemies directly or rely on concealment and darker abilities. Skill development then supports the style the player prefers.
The new game’s combat model is an open question
No combat footage, system description or progression plan is included in the reported sequel reference. It has not been announced whether spell combinations, stealth, plants, potions or Dark Arts will return. Nor is there evidence for cooperative play, competitive modes or a different genre structure.
Platforms and release timing
Where the existing game can be played
The current official Hogwarts Legacy site lists PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch availability. Platform features and performance can vary by edition, hardware and region, so the broad list should not be read as a promise that every version is identical.

Nintendo’s US store listing identifies Warner Bros. Games as publisher, Avalanche Software as developer and November 14, 2023 as the release date for the Nintendo Switch version. That date belongs specifically to the US Switch listing; it should not be generalized to the original game’s other platforms or regions.
There is no launch information for the sequel
The August 2026 report gives no release date, launch window, platform list or edition plan for the second installment. A reader deciding whether to wait should treat the project as announced only at the level of a reported corporate reference. Any article or video promising a specific console lineup or year is going beyond the information currently available here.
Is the “new Harry Potter RPG” a different game?
Several Harry Potter games exist, so the wording can cause confusion. The reported project is tied to the phrase “second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.” It is not the same thing as Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, which NetEase describes as a free-to-play mobile collectible-card and massively multiplayer wizarding-duel game with strategy role-playing elements. That mobile title has a different format and should not be used as evidence about the reported console and PC follow-up.

For readers seeking a playable RPG while waiting, Hogwarts Legacy is the documented choice. Its platform availability is established; the sequel’s is not.
How to evaluate new sequel announcements
When a formal reveal arrives, these are the details that will turn the current report into a meaningful comparison:
- Official title and developer: confirms whether the corporate wording refers to a direct sequel, a spin-off or a differently named project.
- Era and location: establishes whether the story remains in the 1800s and whether Hogwarts is still the main setting.
- Protagonist model: shows whether players create a student, control a fixed character or switch between perspectives.
- World structure: clarifies whether the game uses an open world, a new school, multiple regions or a more mission-based layout.
- RPG systems: identifies which activities return and whether relationships, houses, crafting and skills have been redesigned.
- Combat and choices: explains whether spell combinations, stealth, preparation items and moral or narrative choices remain central.
- Platforms and date: separates confirmed launch plans from retailer listings, rumors or regional assumptions.
Until those points are published by the rights holder or platform owners, the original game is the only version that can be described in concrete mechanical terms.
What players can conclude now
Hogwarts Legacy is a released, 1800s-set open-world action RPG built around a custom Hogwarts student, exploration, spellcraft, preparation, relationships and flexible combat.
