Third-party games reach Nintendo Switch through a development and publishing process, not a simple export button. A studio first gets authorized Nintendo developer access and any necessary engine resources, then adapts and profiles its game on Switch hardware, prepares platform-specific content, and submits the finished release for rating and Nintendo review. The exact work depends on the game, its engine, and the performance and content goals its publisher chooses.

What a Switch port involves

A port is a version of an existing game adapted to run on another platform. For a Switch release, that means more than producing a build that launches: the team must work within Nintendo’s developer process, make the game behave acceptably on the target hardware, and prepare it for release through Nintendo’s storefront.

The work is shaped by the original project. A game’s engine and version, rendering approach, code, assets, input design, memory use, loading behavior, and platform-specific features can all affect what needs to change. There is no single checklist of technical fixes that applies to every title, and the publicly described process does not expose Nintendo’s full technical certification checklist.

Bulkhead Interactive’s port of The Turing Test is a useful example of one Unreal Engine project, rather than a recipe for all Switch ports. In an Unreal Engine case study published on April 10, 2020, programmers Ves Georgiev and John Newberry described how the team adapted and tuned that game for the platform.

How a studio gets authorized to develop for Switch

Register and request platform access

Nintendo’s public developer process begins with registering an account. Individuals as well as companies can register. To reach development resources and support, developers accept the portal’s non-disclosure agreement and terms, then make a separate application for Switch information. Registration alone should not be confused with having access to the Switch materials needed to build and validate a release.

That distinction matters because console development uses authorized platform resources. The public-facing overview can explain the broad route, but does not publish every technical requirement or certification detail. A studio needs to use the official developer relationship and resources available to it rather than assume that a public guide contains the complete console workflow.

Secure the engine-specific materials

Using a cross-platform engine does not remove the platform-access step. Epic says access to Unreal Engine’s Switch documentation requires approved Nintendo Switch developer status and the necessary permissions. The relevant materials are made available through a private Switch Development forum.

As a result, public Unreal tutorials may help explain general engine concepts, but they cannot fully document the authorized Switch-specific workflow. The same practical principle applies to planning a port: the team needs both a suitable game project and the permissions and platform resources required to develop for the console.

How developers adapt an existing game

Evaluate the project before making changes

Once the team has access, it needs to understand what the existing game asks of the hardware and how it is built. That assessment includes the engine version, rendering features, code paths, asset choices, input behavior, memory demands, loading patterns, and any platform-specific behavior. These are areas to investigate, not a universal list of defects: a particular game may need substantial changes in one area and little or none in another.

Engine compatibility can provide a starting point, but it does not guarantee that an existing build will look or perform the same way on Switch. Bulkhead reported that moving The Turing Test to a newer Unreal Engine version was mostly straightforward at the code level. However, rendering changes altered the game’s appearance, so the team had to work on color grading, specularity, and reflections. A project can therefore be manageable as a code migration while still needing careful visual adjustment.

Profile the running game to find bottlenecks

Teams use profiling to identify where a game is spending time or encountering performance problems on the target. The point is to measure the behavior of the actual project, rather than assume that a particular asset type or effect is always responsible. Profiling findings then inform which changes are worth making and whether they improve the experience without causing unacceptable visual or gameplay costs.

In its The Turing Test port, Bulkhead found that streaming and garbage collection caused spikes on the game thread. The team described tuning streaming, reducing expensive Blueprint operations and unnecessary actor ticks, replacing some skeletal meshes with static meshes, removing collisions that were not needed, and adjusting effects and materials after profiling. Those actions are examples of responses to that game’s measured problems; they are not guaranteed fixes or requirements for another port.

This is why the phrase “optimize for Switch” can conceal a lot of project-specific work. A studio first needs to establish what is slow, costly, or visually different in its own build. It can then focus effort on the measured causes rather than make broad cuts that may not address the real constraint.

How teams balance frame rate and visual quality

Porting often involves choosing among performance, image quality, and loading behavior. A team may decide that a particular frame-rate target is the best fit for a game, then tune demanding features and assets to meet that target across its scenes. The right target depends on the game’s design and what its developers can sustain; a figure from one port is not a platform-wide rule.

For The Turing Test, Bulkhead said it targeted 45 frames per second because it could maintain that rate across the game’s scenes. The team also tuned demanding effects, including ambient occlusion and screen-space reflections. The reported 45 fps is a project-specific target from that case study, not a standard that every Switch port must or does use.

Visual changes also need to be judged in context. Reducing or adjusting a rendering effect may help a project meet its chosen performance goals, but it can change how a scene looks. Bulkhead’s work on color grading, specularity, and reflections illustrates why a port is not just a matter of lowering settings: developers may need to preserve the intended appearance while changing how it is achieved.

How localization and release preparation fit in

Prepare the game’s content for its intended release

Technical work is only one part of preparing a release. The team also has to address the content and materials needed for the project’s planned markets and platform submission. In the Bulkhead case study, the team said EFIGS localization was a certification requirement for its project. It dynamically generated localized text textures during loading or when the language changed.

That is evidence about The Turing Test project, not proof that every Switch game has the same localization obligation or should use the same implementation. What a studio needs to localize, and how it handles localized content, depends on the release being prepared. Nintendo’s public process describes age-rating preparation and submission, but does not publish a complete technical or content checklist on the public process page.

Submit the game and storefront materials

Nintendo’s public release outline includes preparing a publishing agreement and age rating, submitting the game for Nintendo review, and providing promotional materials for eShop and online listings. These steps sit alongside the engineering work: a port must be prepared as a product for release, not only as a build that runs on the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The public outline is useful for understanding the stages, but it should not be treated as a substitute for the detailed requirements provided through Nintendo’s developer process. A studio should use the guidance and review process available to its authorized account when preparing its own submission.

How a game reaches the eShop and gets supported

Nintendo says completed games may be self-published on the eShop, with the publisher choosing the price and release date. That gives a publisher control over those release decisions in the described self-publishing route; it does not mean the game bypasses Nintendo’s review or other preparation steps.

After launch, Nintendo’s developer portal provides tools for updates, downloadable content, and price promotions. A Switch port therefore has a post-launch phase as well as a release date. The studio or publisher may need to prepare updates or additional content, while the platform resources support publishing those changes.

What varies from one port to another

There is no reliable universal number for how long a Switch port takes, what it costs, how many people it needs, or how likely it is to succeed. The available sources do not establish general figures for those questions. A project’s scope depends on its original code and assets, engine, performance needs, content plans, and the work uncovered when it is tested on Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing two ports, useful questions include:

  • What platform and engine did each game start from, and did the engine version need to change?
  • What performance target did each team choose, and what evidence supports that target?
  • Were loading or memory demands a significant concern?
  • Which rendering effects or assets needed adjustment, and how did those changes affect the game’s appearance?
  • What localization or other content work was needed for the intended release?
  • How did each project handle submission, publishing, and post-launch support?

Those dimensions help explain why one port may need changes that another does not. The available sources do not provide comparable numeric benchmarks across multiple projects, so a detailed account of one game should not be presented as a performance ranking or an industry average.

What the process means for players

For players, a Switch version is the result of technical and release decisions made for a specific game, not a promise that every visual feature or performance characteristic will match another platform. A cross-platform engine can give a team a route to the console, but engine updates, rendering differences, and measured performance constraints can still require game-specific work.

The clearest lesson from Bulkhead’s example is that profiling and targeted changes—not a universal optimization trick—guided the work on The Turing Test. Nintendo’s public process adds a separate release path involving developer access, rating, review, promotional assets, publishing, and tools for post-launch support. Together, those stages explain why a third-party Switch release is both a platform adaptation and a publishing process.
