First identify what is interrupting you
“Pop-up” is often used to describe several different interruptions, but the fix depends on what is actually appearing. A browser may block a new window or redirect while still displaying advertising embedded within the game page. A notification can appear outside the game and resemble an alert from a pop-up. Changing the wrong permission may do nothing—or make a game feature stop working.

Google Chrome Help cautions that “Not all pop-ups are ads or spam.” A legitimate game feature may use a new window, so do not allow pop-ups broadly just to make one feature work. If you trust the site and need that feature, use a site-specific exception where the browser offers one.
Before changing anything, notice when and where the interruption happens. Does it appear only after tapping a particular game button, open a new tab, or arrive after you have left the page? Does it remain inside the game’s visible area? Those clues help distinguish a window, a notification, and an ad that is part of the page. You do not need to identify the ad provider or the technical mechanism; you only need to match the symptom to the right browser control.

It can also help to test one change at a time. If you switch on a pop-up blocker, then block cookies and change tracking protection all at once, a feature failure will be harder to diagnose. Start with the setting that matches what you saw, revisit the same game action, and only then consider another setting. This keeps troubleshooting focused and makes it easier to undo a change that affects play.
Block pop-ups in iPhone Safari
- Open the iPhone’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Turn on Block Pop-ups.
- Return to the game and see whether the separate window or redirect stops.
This setting blocks pop-up windows; it is not a promise that every advertisement placed inside a game page will be removed. If an interruption persists, avoid tapping an alert that urges you to install something, claim a prize, or follow an unfamiliar link. Determine whether it is part of the page or a site notification before changing another setting.
Safari also has privacy options beyond pop-up blocking. Their presence does not mean that the pop-up control itself blocks all advertising, and changing privacy settings may affect how sites behave. The relevant iPhone instruction establishes the path for Block Pop-ups; it does not establish that Safari removes every in-page ad.

If the window no longer appears but a banner or video remains embedded in the game, the setting may be doing exactly what it is designed to do: blocking the new window without removing content on the page. If an alert still appears when Safari is not showing the game, investigate the site’s notification permission rather than repeatedly toggling the pop-up control.
Block pop-ups and redirects in Android Chrome
- Open Chrome and tap More.
- Tap Settings > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects.
- Turn the control off to block pop-ups and redirects.
- Return to the game and test the action that was opening a window or sending you away.
Chrome indicates when it blocks a pop-up in the address bar. If a trusted game feature depends on a new window, use a site-specific exception only for that site and only if you need the feature. Avoid allowing pop-ups for all sites: that gives every site the same permission, rather than addressing the one compatibility problem.
If you still see interruptions after blocking windows, check notifications separately. In Chrome, site permissions can be managed for individual sites; find the game’s notification permission and revoke it if you do not want alerts from that site. A notification is not the same thing as a new browser window, so changing the pop-up control will not necessarily stop notifications.

When Chrome blocks a window, the address-bar indicator is a useful clue: it tells you a pop-up was stopped, rather than proving that the game itself has failed. If the blocked window was triggered by a feature you deliberately selected and you trust the site, you can consider an exception for that specific site. Keep the distinction clear: an exception is for a known function on a site you choose, not a reason to permit every page to open windows.
To deal with notifications, look for the game site among Chrome’s site permissions and review its notification setting. Revoke permission if you no longer want alerts. If you are unsure whether an alert came from a website, avoid pressing its buttons; use the browser’s permission controls to inspect the site rather than responding to the alert itself. Pop-up controls and notification controls solve different problems, so one may need attention even when the other is already set as desired.
Reduce cross-site tracking
Android Chrome: third-party cookies
Third-party cookies can let embedded sites personalize advertising and learn about activity across sites. To restrict them in Android Chrome, open Settings > Site settings > Third-party cookies and choose the blocking control available there. This is a privacy choice, not a guaranteed way to remove all adverts: blocking cookies limits one way of tracking and may not affect advertising delivered directly within a game page.
Some sites may not work as expected when third-party cookies are blocked. If a game stops working, first confirm that the cookie change caused the problem by testing the site’s relevant feature. If you trust the site and need that feature, use a site-specific exception if Chrome offers one. That preserves the broader setting for other sites instead of weakening it globally.
For example, if the game loads but a particular embedded feature no longer works after you block third-party cookies, test that feature again before changing anything else. If the problem is limited to that site and you trust it, an exception for that site may restore the feature while leaving the broader protection in place elsewhere. This is a trade-off, not a guarantee: the site may still behave differently, and blocking cookies is not a universal ad-removal switch.

Firefox for iOS: Enhanced Tracking Protection and ad blocking
Firefox for iOS offers Enhanced Tracking Protection, which Mozilla describes as reducing targeted ads and helping stop advertisers from tracking browsing. Mozilla also warns that protection can affect site functionality. If a game breaks or an embedded feature fails, review the protection setting for that site rather than assuming every game will work identically under stricter protections.
Mozilla has also described an ad blocker for Firefox on iOS that works alongside existing privacy protection, while explicitly noting that it will not block every ad. The feature was described as rolling out, so availability can depend on the current Firefox version and settings. Check what is actually available in your installed browser instead of assuming that the feature is present or that it will remove all game advertising.
These two Firefox capabilities should not be confused with the pop-up switch. Tracking protection is intended to reduce tracking, and the described ad-blocking feature may reduce some advertising; neither description promises that every game ad or interruption will vanish. If a setting is not visible in your installed version, do not assume that you have missed a universal control—check the current browser version and available settings.

There is no measured cross-browser benchmark establishing a percentage of mobile-game pop-ups or tracking that these settings block. Choose based on the interruption you are seeing and whether your particular game still works, not on an assumed universal ranking.

Also check whether you previously granted the game notification permission. These are separate questions; a browser can block new windows while still showing in-page ads, or reduce tracking while a site feature becomes less reliable.

Do Not Track belongs in a different category from the other controls. Google says that most websites and services do not change their behavior when Chrome sends the request. It can express a preference, but it does not itself stop pop-ups, cookies, notifications, or ads. Do not count it as a substitute for the settings that directly manage windows, site permissions, cookies, or tracking protection.
Troubleshoot without weakening every setting
The same interruption keeps appearing
- If it opens a new browser window or attempts a redirect, verify that the pop-up control is on in Safari or off in Chrome, using the paths above.
- If it appears outside the game page, review the site’s notification permission separately.
- If it is visibly part of the game page, do not expect the pop-up control to remove it. Tracking protection or a browser’s available ad-blocking feature may reduce some ads, but neither is guaranteed to remove every one.
- Do not tap suspicious alerts to make them go away. Close the page or return to the browser controls and inspect the permission instead.
A game feature stops working
- Identify the setting changed immediately before the feature failed—such as third-party-cookie blocking or tracking protection.
- Test the specific feature again so you can distinguish a site compatibility issue from an unrelated interruption.
- If the site offers a feature you trust and need, add an exception for that site where the browser allows it. Do not enable pop-ups or cookies for all sites as a first response.
- If you cannot find a suitable site-specific exception, decide whether the feature is important enough to use the stricter setting’s available site controls differently; restore only what you need, and check the game again.
A legitimate game window is blocked
Some sites use pop-up windows for legitimate functions. Chrome shows a blocked-pop-up indication in the address bar. If you deliberately triggered a feature on a site you trust, use a site-specific allowance if available, then return to the normal blocked setting for other sites. Do not treat every blocked window as evidence that the browser or game is broken.
You are not sure which control to change
Use a simple order. First, decide whether the item is a new window, a notification, or content drawn inside the game page. Next, change only the corresponding control: pop-up blocking for windows and redirects, the site’s notification permission for alerts, or tracking and ad-blocking protection for cross-site tracking and some in-page advertising. Then repeat the same game action to see what changed. If the problem is resolved, leave unrelated settings alone.

If the symptom changes but does not disappear, that is still useful information. For example, blocking a redirect might stop a page from taking you elsewhere while leaving an in-page promotion visible. That does not mean the blocker failed; it means the remaining item may be controlled by something else or may be part of the game page. Avoid chasing an ad-free result through increasingly broad permissions or settings when the browser controls do not promise that outcome.

- For unwanted alerts: remove notification permission from the game site; this is a separate decision from blocking pop-ups.
- For less cross-site cookie tracking: consider Chrome’s third-party-cookie control, while watching for site features that stop working.
- For Firefox on iOS: review Enhanced Tracking Protection and check your installed version and settings for the described ad-blocking feature.
- For Do Not Track: treat it as a request to websites, not as a substitute for browser protections.
Use the narrowest control that addresses the problem. A browser setting can reduce a particular kind of interruption or tracking, but it cannot guarantee an ad-free game or identical behavior across every mobile browser game.
