You can print wargaming miniatures on either a resin or an FDM 3D printer. Choose resin when fine detail on small figures matters most and you can manage ventilation, protective gear, washing, and curing. FDM is a practical option if you already have a filament printer or prefer its workflow, but expect to tune the setup and accept more visible layer lines.
Choose resin or FDM based on detail and workflow
| Method | Best suited to | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Resin (vat photopolymerization) | Small figures with fine sculpted detail and a smooth surface appearance. | Requires handling liquid resin, suitable ventilation and protective equipment, plus washing and post-curing. Requirements vary by resin and printer; follow their instructions. |
| FDM (filament) | Using a printer you already own, or avoiding liquid-resin handling and cleanup. | Layer lines are more visible on small figures, and detail depends on nozzle, layer height, orientation, supports, and printer setup. |
Prusa’s overview of printer types and miniature suitability and Formlabs’ guide to miniature printing and finishing describe why resin is commonly favored for fine detail. Your existing equipment, workspace, and willingness to post-process matter as much as the printer category.
How to print miniatures on an FDM printer
FDM can produce usable miniatures, but there is no universal profile: printer, filament, slicer, model geometry, and intended finish all affect the result. Prusa’s guide is specifically about the Original Prusa MINI and should be treated as a starting point, not a guaranteed recipe for every machine.
- Check the printer and build surface. Make sure the machine is in good condition and the build surface is prepared properly; first-layer adhesion affects the rest of the print.
- Consider a smaller nozzle. Prusa’s Original Prusa MINI example uses a 0.25 mm nozzle. Confirm that a nozzle of this size is compatible with your printer before changing hardware.
- Try a fine layer height. The same guide suggests trying 0.07 mm or 0.1 mm layers with that nozzle. These values are an example workflow, not a universal setting.
- Orient the model and limit supports carefully. Rotate the miniature to balance visible detail, stability, and the need for supports. Supports can leave marks or damage delicate parts when removed, so avoid adding them where they are not needed.
- Inspect the slicer preview and first layers. Check that thin, elevated features are supported as intended and that the first layers adhere. The Prusa guide notes that features kept printing in one spot for a prolonged period can be vulnerable.
Smaller layer heights improve vertical resolution but increase print time. Prusa’s layer and perimeter guidance says the quality improvement below 0.10 mm is relatively minor compared with the additional time in its support context. Choose a setting for the finish you need rather than assuming the smallest available layer height is always worthwhile.

What resin printing requires
Resin miniatures need more than a successful exposure: the print must be washed and post-cured according to the resin and printer instructions. Formlabs describes these steps in its miniature printing guide.

Liquid photopolymer and cleaning solvents require careful handling. NIOSH’s January 2025 desktop vat photopolymerization safety infographic recommends ventilation, appropriate personal protective equipment, and clean work practices. Replace protective equipment immediately if it contacts uncured resin or solvents. Follow the safety data sheet for your specific resin and the printer maker’s instructions; the right precautions depend on the materials and equipment.
