WordPress calls its back-end control area the Administration Screen. It is separate from the public-facing site that visitors see. From here, authorized users create and organize content, moderate comments, manage accounts, change the design, install extensions, and configure how the site behaves.
The screen is organized into four persistent areas:

- Toolbar (header): Links to the public site, your profile, quick-create actions, notifications, and contextual help.
- Main navigation: The left sidebar opens Dashboard, Posts, Media, Pages, Comments, Appearance, Plugins, Users, Tools, and Settings. Submenus usually appear when you hover over a section.
- Work area: The central panel where you edit content, review lists, configure options, or see Dashboard widgets.
- Footer: Version and other administration information supplied by the installation.
Menus are not identical for everyone. WordPress only displays actions that the logged-in account and its role are allowed to use, and plugins can add or remove their own menu entries.
How to log in
Use the standard administrator URL
- Open your site’s domain in a browser and append
/wp-admin/, for examplehttps://yourdomain.example/wp-admin/. - If you are logged out, WordPress normally redirects that address to the login form automatically.
- Enter the account’s username or email address and password.
- Select the sign-in button. A successful login loads the Dashboard; an account with fewer privileges may land on a restricted administration view.
WordPress’s underlying standard login script is https://yourdomain.example/wp-login.php. It displays the same basic sign-in form and is useful when you want to go directly to the login page.

A hosting provider, security administrator, or security plugin can change or protect the standard route. Some installations use a custom login link, an extra access layer, or host-specific controls. If both standard addresses fail, use the login URL supplied by your host or site administrator rather than guessing alternate paths. A customized route is an installation-specific setting, so there is no universal replacement URL.
Recover a forgotten password
- Open the login form.
- Select the password-recovery link.
- Enter the account username or email when prompted.
- Follow the message sent to the account’s email address to set a new password.
Password recovery requires access to the account email or another administrator or hosting control that can assist. If you no longer control that email address, the form alone cannot prove ownership or guarantee a reset; contact a site administrator or your host.
What appears immediately after login
The default Dashboard is a collection of widgets in the work area. Their content can vary with WordPress version, user permissions, and plugins, but the standard installation can include the following.
At a Glance
At a Glance summarizes the site’s posts, pages, comments, active theme, and WordPress version. It is a quick orientation panel rather than a complete content report.
The Tool Desk

Activity shows scheduled and recently published content and recent comments. Depending on your capabilities, it can provide direct links to moderate or edit those items.

Quick Draft
Quick Draft saves an unfinished post from the Dashboard. It is intended for notes and ideas; you can open the saved draft later in the Posts area and finish the full editor workflow.
WordPress Events and News
This widget displays WordPress events and news supplied by the project. Its appearance and entries can change over time.
Updates
The updates area reports available updates for WordPress core, themes, plugins, and translations. An update notice does not itself indicate that every item should be changed without checking compatibility and backups.

Using the main navigation
Posts: chronological content
Use Posts for time-oriented entries that normally appear in a chronological blog or news stream. A typical post workflow is:
- Choose Posts > Add New.
- Enter a title and build the content in the editor.
- Assign categories and tags when they help readers browse related entries.
- Save a draft, preview the result, or publish it immediately.
- Use the scheduling control to set a future publication time instead of publishing now.
From the Posts list you can edit existing entries, preview them, schedule them, apply categories or tags, bulk-edit selected items, or move items to the trash. The options visible in the editor and list depend on your role and installed plugins.
Pages: relatively static information
Pages are intended for relatively stable content such as About or Contact information. They are separate from the chronological posts stream.
- Open Pages > Add New.
- Add the page title and body content.
- Save a draft or preview the layout.
- Publish when the content is ready, or update an existing page from the Pages list.
Whether a page appears in a menu or on the front page is controlled by the site’s theme and navigation settings, not simply by publishing the page.

Media: files and metadata
Choose Media > Add New to upload images, video, audio, and documents. The Media Library provides a searchable, filterable list of uploaded files.
- Open Media > Add New and select files through the upload control.
- Open Media > Library to search or filter the collection.
- Select an item to edit its title, caption, alternative text, and other available metadata.
- Delete files only after checking where they are used; removing an uploaded file can break links or embedded content.
Alternative text describes an image’s purpose for people using assistive technology. Enter it in the attachment details when the image conveys information; decorative images need an appropriate accessibility treatment instead of a meaningless description.
Comments: moderation
The Comments screen collects visitor comments for review. If your account has the required capability, you can approve, reply, mark a comment as spam, or send it to the trash. Moderation actions may also be available from the Activity widget or individual post screens.
Users: accounts and profiles
Users is where permitted accounts are added and managed. You can edit profile information, change account details, and assign or review roles only when your account has those capabilities. A role with publishing access does not automatically have permission to manage every user or site setting.

Appearance: themes, menus, and widgets
Appearance contains design controls exposed by the active theme. Depending on that theme, you may see a classic Customizer, menus, widgets, theme options, or the block-based Site Editor.
Classic Customizer and theme controls
A classic theme may expose a Customizer for site identity, colors, typography, menus, widgets, and other theme settings. The controls are theme-dependent, so two sites can show different panels.
Block-based Site Editor
A block theme can replace the classic Customizer with the Site Editor. Its interface is designed for editing templates, template parts, navigation, styles, and other block-based elements. If the Site Editor is not present, the active theme may not support it or your account may lack the needed capability.

Plugins: optional functionality
Use Plugins to install, activate, deactivate, update, or remove extensions when your account is allowed to do so. Plugins can add new sidebar entries, settings pages, editor panels, or Dashboard widgets.
- Install: Add an extension from the available installation screen or upload a package supplied by a trusted source.
- Activate: Turn on an installed plugin so its features run.
- Deactivate: Turn off a plugin without removing its files, useful for troubleshooting.
- Update: Apply a newer release after reviewing compatibility and the site’s recovery options.
- Delete: Remove an extension only after deactivating it and confirming that its data or settings are no longer needed.
Because plugins execute code inside the site, install only extensions you trust and keep a tested recovery path. A plugin can also change the administration interface, so a missing menu may be intentional rather than an error.
Tools: import, export, and privacy utilities
Tools includes import and export functions and privacy-related utilities supplied by WordPress or installed extensions. Exporting content can be useful before a migration, but an export is not automatically a complete server backup of files, databases, and plugin configuration.
Settings: site-wide behavior
The Settings area contains controls for site identity and behavior. Common groups include:
- General: Basic site identity and administrative options.
- Writing: Defaults related to creating content.
- Reading: Front-page and content-display choices.
- Discussion: Comment and moderation behavior.
- Media: Image-size and media-handling preferences.
- Permalinks: The URL structure used for posts and other content.
- Privacy: Privacy-page and related controls.
Plugins and themes may add their own settings screens. Change one related group at a time and record the previous value when adjusting a live site, especially for reading, discussion, and permalink settings.
User roles and why menus differ
WordPress capabilities are role-based. Administrators generally see the broadest set of controls, while editors, authors, and other roles receive narrower access. The exact capability map can be modified by plugins and hosting configuration, so a role name alone is not a guarantee of a particular menu.
For example, an Author can normally work with permitted posts but may not see user-management actions in the toolbar’s New menu. An Editor or Administrator may see additional publishing, moderation, or configuration controls. If a button or sidebar item is absent, first confirm the account role and then check whether a plugin or theme changes capability rules.

Customize the Dashboard workspace
Show or hide panels with Screen Options
Many administration screens include a Screen Options tab near the top. Open it to show or hide the panels available on that screen. The choices are user-specific in many installations, so hiding a widget does not remove it for other administrators.
Rearrange panels
Dashboard panels can be rearranged by dragging and dropping them. Put frequently used information near the top and hide panels that distract from the task. A plugin may supply a panel that cannot be moved or may add its own layout rules.
Use the Toolbar’s New menu
The toolbar’s New menu offers shortcuts for actions such as creating a post, page, or other item. It duplicates some sidebar actions and is role-dependent. If an expected shortcut is missing, open the corresponding sidebar section and check your permissions.
Login and access troubleshooting
The page redirects repeatedly or says there are too many redirects
Login redirect loops are commonly associated with blocked or invalid cookies, URL or HTTPS mismatches, or security layers that conflict with WordPress. Ensure cookies are enabled for the site, try a private browser window, and confirm that you are using the site’s current HTTPS address. If the problem persists, the host or security administrator may need to inspect redirect rules and the configured site URLs.
The login form never appears
Try both standard routes, /wp-admin/ and /wp-login.php, using the exact domain and protocol supplied by the host. If neither works, look for a custom login link in the hosting control panel or site documentation. A security plugin or host firewall may intentionally hide or protect the standard paths.
The password is rejected
Check that the username or email belongs to this specific WordPress installation and use the recovery link. Password recovery cannot complete without access to the account email or an administrator or hosting control that can reset the account. Avoid repeatedly guessing credentials, which can trigger additional security controls.
You can log in but a menu is missing
Confirm the account’s role and capabilities, then check whether the active theme or a plugin supplies the missing feature. Some controls appear only on particular screen sizes or after opening a submenu. A lower-privilege account may be functioning correctly even when it cannot see Users, Plugins, or settings.
The Dashboard is blank or a feature breaks after an update
Record which core, theme, or plugin changed most recently. If you have permission, deactivate the suspected plugin and test again; do not delete it while diagnosing. Ask the host or another administrator to review server errors when the administration screen itself cannot load. Restore from a known-good backup only through the site’s established recovery process.
Safe maintenance practices
Review updates even when automatic maintenance is enabled
WordPress applies automatic maintenance and security updates in most cases, but administrators should still open the Updates screen and review available core, theme, plugin, and translation updates. Check compatibility, confirm that backups or restoration procedures are available, and update in a controlled order on important sites.
Protect the login and session
- Use a strong, unique password for every WordPress account.
- Enable two-factor authentication when the installation or its security tooling supports it.
- Use HTTPS for the public site and administration session.
- Do not share administrator credentials when a narrower role will work.
- Sign out on shared devices and keep browsers and operating systems maintained.
Expect installation-specific protection
A host or security administrator may place additional protection around /wp-admin/, such as an access policy or extra authentication layer. Configuration details vary by host and security tooling; follow the administrator’s documented procedure rather than applying a setting copied from another site.
