To reach a Docker application from another machine, publish a host port when you start the container. For example, docker run -d --name web -p 8080:80 nginx maps TCP port 8080 on the Docker server to port 80 in the container. A remote client then connects to http://SERVER_IP:8080, not to port 80, provided the application is listening and the host, cloud firewall, and any upstream router allow the connection.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
An EXPOSE declaration alone does not make a service reachable from outside the Docker host. Docker’s documentation describes publishing as the mechanism that makes a bridge-network container port available externally, and warns that published ports are insecure by default.

The client normally knows only the server’s LAN or public address. It does not connect to the private bridge address assigned to the container. The host port is the externally visible part of the mapping; the container port is where the process is listening inside its network namespace.
With the example mapping, a request to SERVER_IP:8080 is forwarded to port 80 in web. A request to SERVER_IP:80 will work only if some separate service is listening on host port 80. Docker does not automatically make the container’s port number equal to the host’s port number.
Docker documentation says to use the
--publishor-pflag to make a port available outside the host and to containers in other bridge networks.
EXPOSE, -p, and -P: what each one does
These settings are often confused because they all mention ports, but they have different effects.
| Setting | Effect | What a remote client uses | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
EXPOSE 80 in an image |
Records that the image expects a service on container port 80. It does not create a host listener or firewall exception. | No external address is created by this declaration alone. | Document the intended container port for users and tooling. |
-p 8080:80 |
Creates a stable host-to-container mapping from host TCP 8080 to container TCP 80. | SERVER_IP:8080 |
Normal choice when clients need a predictable port. |
-p 127.0.0.1:8080:80 |
Binds host port 8080 only on loopback in normal NAT mode. | Only the Docker host, using 127.0.0.1:8080 |
Keep an admin service private or place a public reverse proxy in front of it. |
-p 192.0.2.10:8080:80 |
Binds the mapping only to the specified host interface. | 192.0.2.10:8080 |
Expose a service on one selected LAN or public interface. |
-P or --publish-all |
Publishes ports declared by the image on randomly assigned host ports. | The assigned host port shown by Docker, not necessarily the container port number. | Temporary testing or environments where a random port is acceptable. |
If no host address is supplied in a normal -p mapping, Docker publishes on all host addresses by default, including 0.0.0.0 and, where applicable, ::. That broad binding is convenient but increases exposure.
Choose the right publish mapping
Stable TCP service
For a web server listening on container TCP port 80, use a fixed host port:
docker run -d --name web -p 8080:80 nginx
The number on the left is the port clients dial; the number on the right must match the application’s listening port inside the container. The two numbers may be identical, such as -p 80:80, but they do not have to be.
Loopback-only service
Use an explicit loopback address when the service should not accept direct connections from the network:
docker run -d --name admin -p 127.0.0.1:9000:9000 admin-image
A reverse proxy or an administrator on the same server can use 127.0.0.1:9000. A workstation on the LAN cannot reach that mapping because the host is not listening on its LAN interface.

One selected interface
If a server has multiple interfaces, bind to the address that should receive traffic:
docker run -d --name internal-api -p 192.0.2.10:8080:80 api-image
This avoids placing the listener on unrelated interfaces. The address must already belong to the Docker host, and clients must have a route to that network.
UDP services
Docker assumes TCP unless the protocol is specified. Add /udp for a UDP service:
docker run -d --name dns-test -p 5353:5353/udp dns-image
A TCP mapping on the same numeric port does not carry UDP packets. If a service uses both protocols, publish each protocol explicitly.
Several container ports
Each externally reachable port needs its own mapping. For example:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
docker run -d --name game-server -p 27015:27015/udp -p 8080:80 game-image
Here, game traffic uses host UDP 27015 while an HTTP status page uses host TCP 8080. Open only the protocols and host ports that clients actually need.
Step-by-step: publish a port and test it
1. Confirm the application’s listening port
First identify the port and protocol used by the process, rather than relying only on an image label. An image may declare an intended port with EXPOSE, but the application can still be configured differently at runtime.
For image metadata, you can inspect declared ports with:
docker inspect -f '{{json .Config.ExposedPorts}}' IMAGE_OR_CONTAINER
Then verify the application configuration and make sure it listens on a non-loopback address inside the container. A process bound only to 127.0.0.1 inside the container is not reachable through Docker’s forwarding path, even when the port mapping is correct. The process should normally listen on 0.0.0.0 or on the container’s own interface address.

2. Start the container with an explicit mapping
For the running web example:
docker run -d --name web -p 8080:80 nginx
If a container with that name already exists, remove it only when doing so is safe, or recreate it with the required mapping. Port publication is set when the container is created; changing an image’s EXPOSE line does not retrofit a mapping onto an existing container.
3. Check that Docker installed the mapping
Use both the container list and the port query:
docker ps
docker port web
The output should show host port 8080 forwarding to container port 80. With -P, this command is especially important because Docker selected the host port dynamically.
4. Test on the Docker server
Start with the host’s loopback address:
curl http://127.0.0.1:8080
A successful local response proves that the container process and Docker’s host mapping are functioning on that machine. It does not prove that a cloud security group, host firewall, or router permits traffic from elsewhere.
5. Test from another machine on the same LAN
From a second device, use the Docker server’s LAN address and the published host port:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →curl http://LAN_SERVER_IP:8080
If this fails while the loopback test works, inspect the binding address and the host firewall. A loopback-only mapping, a firewall rule, or a listener on the wrong interface commonly causes this pattern.
6. Test from an actually external network
Use the server’s public address and the same host port:
curl http://PUBLIC_SERVER_IP:8080
Testing from a different network matters because some routers do not support or permit clients to reach their own public address from inside the LAN. A mobile connection or another external network gives a more reliable check of Internet reachability.
Firewalls, cloud rules, and routers
Docker creates forwarding and NAT rules for published bridge ports, but it cannot override every network control between the client and the container. A successful local curl can coexist with a blocked remote connection.
Host firewall
Allow the required host port and protocol in the operating system firewall. For the web example, that means permitting inbound TCP 8080 on the interface where Docker published it. Do not open an entire range when one port is sufficient. Check firewall logs when packets are dropped; a timeout with no application log entry often indicates filtering before the container.

Cloud security groups and VPS firewalls
Hosted servers commonly have a provider-level security group or network firewall in addition to the operating system firewall. Add an inbound rule for the published host port and protocol, ideally restricted to known source addresses. A Docker mapping does not automatically create a cloud firewall rule.
Home and office routers
If the Docker host is behind a router, the router must forward its external port to the Docker server’s LAN address and published host port. For example, an external TCP port can be forwarded to 192.168.1.20:8080. The router’s forwarding rule, the server firewall, and Docker’s mapping must all agree on the protocol and destination. Carrier-grade NAT or an ISP policy can prevent inbound Internet connections even when local forwarding is configured.
Docker firewall handling
Docker’s firewall integration affects both container Internet access and external connectivity. Disabling Docker’s firewall handling without replacement rules changes that behavior. If a hardened host uses custom firewall management, document the replacement forwarding and NAT policy rather than assuming the published port will continue to work automatically.
Binding scope and security
Publishing a port is an exposure decision, not merely a connectivity setting. Docker warns that publishing container ports is insecure by default because a mapping can make the service available beyond the host.
- Publish only services that genuinely need remote access.
- Bind administrative dashboards and control APIs to
127.0.0.1or a private interface. - Restrict source addresses in host and cloud firewall rules whenever the client population is known.
- Use TLS or a reverse proxy for public HTTP services instead of exposing an unprotected application directly.
- Review every mapping after deployment; an omitted host address can bind on all host interfaces.
- Use separate host ports when several containers serve the same internal port.
A reverse proxy can be the only public entry point while application containers remain loopback-bound or reachable only on a private Docker network. This reduces the number of independently exposed services and centralizes TLS and access policy.

The local test fails
Check the application before checking the Internet path. Confirm that the container is running, that the process is listening on the expected container port, and that it is not bound only to the container’s loopback interface. Compare the actual mapping with:
The Tool Desk

docker port CONTAINER
A refusal usually means no process is accepting the destination port, while a timeout can indicate filtering. If the mapping points to container port 80 but the application listens on 8080, recreate the container with the correct right-hand port.
The host can connect, but another LAN machine cannot
Inspect the left-hand bind address. A mapping such as 127.0.0.1:8080:80 is intentionally host-only. For LAN access, use an all-interface mapping or the server’s LAN address, then verify the host firewall permits the traffic on the selected interface.
LAN access works, but Internet access fails
The container and server are probably functioning. Check the cloud security group, provider firewall, router port-forwarding rule, public address, and ISP restrictions. Make sure the external client is using the published host port, not the internal container port.

The wrong port is being tested
In -p 8080:80, remote clients use 8080. Port 80 exists inside the container and is not automatically exposed as host port 80. Query Docker’s actual assignment with docker port CONTAINER, especially after using -P.

Check the protocol. A UDP application needs a mapping ending in /udp and a firewall rule that allows UDP. Testing it with a browser or a TCP-only probe can produce a misleading failure.
Another service already owns the host port
Docker cannot bind a host port that is already occupied. Choose an unused host port or stop and reconfigure the existing listener. The container port can remain unchanged; only the left-hand host port needs to differ.
Direct routing to container addresses
Publishing through NAT is not the only design. Docker also documents routed gateway modes and direct routing, in which remote clients reach container addresses through a route to the container subnet. The network must know that the Docker host is the path to that subnet. Static routes, BGP, or an equivalent routing system can provide that reachability.
Direct routing changes several assumptions:
- Clients use the container’s address rather than the Docker host’s published port.
- The network must carry traffic to and from the container subnet.
- Firewalls must allow traffic to container addresses, not only to host interfaces.
- Address allocation, return routes, and failure handling become network-engineering concerns.
This approach is useful when each container must be a routable endpoint, but it is more complex than ordinary host-port publication. Do not try to reach a bridge container IP from an unrelated network without establishing the required route; the address is normally private to the Docker host’s networking design.
Patterns that avoid common mistakes
Public web service behind a proxy
Publish only the reverse proxy on the public interface. Bind administrative and application ports to loopback or a private network, and let the proxy handle TLS and external HTTP routing. This keeps internal management endpoints out of the public attack surface.
Temporary developer access
A developer can use -p 127.0.0.1:8080:80 when testing on the server itself. If a teammate on the LAN needs access, bind to the server’s LAN address and add a narrow firewall rule instead of exposing every interface.
Random ports for automated tests
-P is convenient when test jobs run many containers concurrently. The test harness must read the assigned host port from Docker and pass that value to the client. It is unsuitable for a documented public endpoint because the port is not stable.
Quick Recap
Pre-publish checklist
- Identify the application’s actual listening port and protocol.
- Ensure the process listens on a reachable container interface, not only container loopback.
- Choose a host port and an intentional bind address.
- Create the container with
-por--publish; do not rely onEXPOSE. - Verify the result with
docker psanddocker port CONTAINER. - Test in order: Docker host, same LAN, then an external network.
- Permit only the required port and protocol in host, cloud, and router firewalls.
- Use the host address and published host port from remote clients.
- Choose loopback binding or a private interface for administration.
- Consider routed direct access only when the network design requires container-address reachability.
