To connect VRage Remote, run the Space Engineers Dedicated Server tools, enable and configure the server’s Remote API, then enter the dedicated server’s reachable HTTP URL, Remote API port and secret key in VRageRemoteClient.exe. The address you use is the Remote API endpoint, not merely the public game-join address.

After the connection succeeds, open Admin Tools > Chat and Players > Online, select your player account and choose Promote. Because dedicated-server administration is handled server-side, this can grant administrator rights to players joining from supported PC or console platforms.

VRage Remote is the administration client included with the Space Engineers Dedicated Server tools. It talks to the dedicated server’s HTTP Remote API, which is a separate management interface from the game session’s normal join endpoint. Keen Software House describes the Remote API as a tool for server providers and experienced users, and its administrator guide lists the Dedicated Server Manager, VRage Remote Client and Remote API as ways to assign administrators.
You therefore need three matching connection values:

- HTTP URL: the IP address or hostname from which the machine running VRage Remote can reach the dedicated server’s Remote API.
- Remote API port: the port configured for the API in Server Manager and the dedicated-server configuration.
- Secret key: the authentication value configured in Server Manager.
The Remote API port and secret key must be set in Server Manager before the dedicated server is started. If the server is hosted by another company, the host must also permit the selected management port and provide a reachable address; a game server address alone does not prove that the Remote API is exposed.

Requirements for a crossplay server
Install the Dedicated Server tools
In Steam, open Library > Tools and install Space Engineers Dedicated Server. The VRage Remote executable is normally located in:
...SpaceEngineersDedicatedServerDedicatedServer64VRageRemoteClient.exeThe exact installation root depends on your Steam library. If you cannot find the executable, open the Dedicated Server installation folder and look in the DedicatedServer64 directory.
Enable the networking features that make crossplay possible
A server intended to be visible to PC and console players must enable both EOS networking and Console compatibility. Keen’s crossplay documentation says EOS servers can appear to PC and Xbox players, and that the join screen can filter between Steam and EOS servers. The same EOS model underpins the broader console crossplay supported by current Space Engineers releases.
Players should select the EOS server list, confirm that the target listing is marked console-compatible and join that listing. A Steam-only server remains PC-only under Keen’s documented model, regardless of whether VRage Remote is working.

Crossplay settings and Remote API settings solve different problems: EOS and console compatibility control who can see and join the game, while the Remote API controls administrative access to the dedicated server.

Configure the Remote API before starting the server
Set the port and secret in Server Manager
- Open the Space Engineers Dedicated Server management tool.
- Select the instance that will host your world.
- Locate the Remote API settings and choose a port, such as
8080, if that port is available in your environment. - Create or enter a secret key. Treat it as a password; anyone who has it and can reach the API may be able to administer the server.
- Save the settings before starting the dedicated server.
The example port 8080 is not a universal default. Use the actual port selected for your instance everywhere: Server Manager, the configuration file, firewall rules and VRage Remote.
Check the configuration file
If the client cannot connect, inspect SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg and verify that Remote API support is enabled and that the port matches the value you selected. The relevant entries should have this form, with your chosen port substituted where necessary:

Reserve the HTTP URL on Windows when required
Some installations report that the Remote API cannot start because Windows has not granted the HTTP listener a URL reservation. Open Command Prompt as administrator on the server machine and run:

netsh http add urlacl url=http://+:8080/vrageremote/ user=EveryoneReplace 8080 with the port configured for your server. The reservation’s path, including /vrageremote/, should match the Remote API endpoint. If Windows reports that the reservation already exists, inspect the existing URL ACL rather than adding a second conflicting entry; remove or change it only if you understand which service owns it.
This command grants the HTTP service permission to listen on that URL. It does not by itself make the API reachable from the internet or from another network.

Allow the port through Windows Firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the same TCP port used by the Remote API, or modify the existing rule for the dedicated server. If the firewall allows the game traffic but blocks the management port, players may still join while VRage Remote reports no connection. A managed host may impose its own firewall or port policy, so the host must confirm that the API port is exposed to your administration machine.
Keen’s support guidance combines URL reservation, firewall access, matching configuration values and a server restart. It is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that every hosting environment grants the required Windows permissions or exposes arbitrary ports. See Keen’s Remote API troubleshooting response.
Connect with VRage Remote Client
- Start the dedicated server and wait until it has finished loading the world.
- Launch
VRageRemoteClient.exefrom theDedicatedServer64folder. - Enter the server’s reachable HTTP URL. For a client on the same computer, this may be a local address; for a remote administrator, use the server hostname or IP address that can actually reach the API.
- Enter the exact Remote API port configured in Server Manager and
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. - Enter the matching secret key.
- Choose Connect (or the client’s equivalent connection command) and wait for the server session to load.
Use the URL of the API endpoint, not only the address copied from the in-game server browser. If your installation uses the standard path shown in Keen’s support example, the listener is associated with a URL ending in /vrageremote/; follow the address format displayed by your server configuration and host.
A successful connection means the client can authenticate with the dedicated server’s management interface. It does not require the administrator to be playing on the same platform as the server owner, and it does not change whether the server is listed as Steam-only or EOS crossplay.

Promote a player to administrator
- In VRage Remote, open Admin Tools.
- Choose Chat and Players.
- Open the Online player list.
- Select the player account you want to administer, including your own account after you have joined the world.
- Choose Promote and confirm the action if prompted.
The player must be visible in the online list. If you are promoting yourself, join the server first, then refresh the list if your name does not appear immediately. The promotion is applied by the dedicated server, so a player connecting from a supported console or PC account can receive rights even when the VRage Remote client is running on a different platform or machine.
Keep the secret key private and promote only accounts you control. Administrator rights are a server permission, not a cosmetic role: an administrator can use the game’s administrative tools against the world and its players.

EOS visibility is separate from Remote API access
For a PC-console world, configure EOS networking and console compatibility on the dedicated server. Players should select EOS in the server browser and verify the console-compatible indicator before joining. If they search the Steam list, they may not see the intended server even though its Remote API is healthy.

Diagnose listing and administration as two separate paths.
Xbox and other console accounts
Keen’s administrator instructions explicitly cover Steam and Xbox accounts and state that server-side administration works across platforms. Current Space Engineers releases use EOS for the broader console crossplay model, but the consoles and features available to a particular release or host can change. Confirm that the platform is supported by the game version and that the player joined the EOS, console-compatible instance before attempting promotion.
Mods and scripts on mixed-platform worlds
For Xbox or mixed PC/Xbox servers, Keen instructs operators to use mods hosted through Mod.io. Client-side scripts do not execute on Xbox. Dedicated-server scripts can work when they are genuinely server-side, but a script that requires every client to run code will not provide the same behavior to Xbox players. Check mod compatibility before using a mod as part of an administrative workflow.

Test locally before testing from the internet
If you administer the machine hosting the server, first test from that machine or the same private network. This separates a Remote API configuration problem from an external routing or hosting restriction. Once the local test works, test from the intended remote administration computer using the host’s reachable address. Do not assume that a successful local connection means an outside network can access the port.
Check every copy of the port number
The most common configuration error is changing the port in one place but not another. Compare the Server Manager value, the XML configuration entry, the URL ACL command, the Windows Firewall rule and the VRage Remote field. A single digit difference points the client at a different listener.
Re-enter credentials instead of reusing stale values
When a secret key has been regenerated, an old value can look like a network failure. Replace the saved credential in VRage Remote with the current key and restart the dedicated server after changing the server-side value. Never publish the key in a screenshot, chat message or public configuration repository.
Operational checklist
- Dedicated Server is installed from Steam Library > Tools.
VRageRemoteClient.exeis available underDedicatedServer64.- EOS networking is enabled for the crossplay instance.
- Console compatibility is enabled when console players must join.
- Remote API is enabled in the server configuration.
- Remote API port is identical in Server Manager, the configuration file and VRage Remote.
- A secret key is configured and entered exactly.
- The Windows HTTP URL reservation exists when the installation requires it.
- The selected port is allowed by Windows Firewall and any host firewall.
- The dedicated server has been restarted after configuration changes.
- Players are searching the EOS list and selecting the console-compatible server.
- Mixed-platform mods come from Mod.io, and client-side scripts are not required by Xbox players.
Once these checks pass, connect with VRage Remote, open the online player list and promote the desired account. Remote administration and crossplay listing then operate independently: the former depends on the HTTP API and credentials, while the latter depends on EOS and console compatibility.
