The dependable pattern is to run the GUI program, a lightweight desktop session, and a VNC server such as TigerVNC in Docker; place noVNC and websockify in front of that VNC socket; then let Caddy provide the public HTTPS endpoint. Your browser connects to Caddy, Caddy forwards HTTP and WebSocket traffic to noVNC, and websockify translates the WebSocket stream into the TCP connection understood by TigerVNC.

Keep the raw VNC port on a private Docker network whenever possible. Publish only the noVNC gateway, protect the hostname with HTTPS and an authentication layer, and tune the desktop for the bandwidth and latency available to the remote player or operator.

What the finished connection looks like
A browser cannot speak the traditional VNC protocol directly. noVNC supplies the HTML5 client that runs in the browser, while websockify bridges the browser’s WebSocket connection to the VNC server’s TCP socket. Caddy sits at the edge, obtains and renews HTTPS certificates, and reverse-proxies requests to the noVNC service.
- Browser: opens an HTTPS hostname and downloads the noVNC interface.
- Caddy: terminates TLS and forwards the HTTP and WebSocket requests.
- noVNC: renders the remote framebuffer in a browser tab.
- websockify: converts WebSocket traffic to a VNC TCP stream.
- TigerVNC or another VNC server: exposes the desktop session used by the GUI application.
- Docker: provides the isolated network and process environment for these services.
The most secure normal topology is therefore public HTTPS to Caddy, Caddy to noVNC, noVNC/websockify to TigerVNC over an internal Docker network. The VNC port does not need to be published on the host at all.

Components and the job each one performs
Docker
Docker runs the application, desktop session, VNC server, and optional browser gateway as repeatable services. A published port forwards traffic from the host into a container; by default, publishing can listen on every host interface, so bind it to a specific interface when an internet-facing listener is not required. Docker’s network naming also lets the gateway reach the VNC service by container or service name instead of a changing IP address.
TigerVNC or another VNC server
The VNC server creates the framebuffer session and accepts VNC protocol connections. In a common Linux layout, display :1 listens on TCP port 5901, although the actual display number and port depend on the image’s startup configuration. The GUI application must run inside that desktop session, not merely as a background process with no display.

noVNC is an HTML VNC client and an application built on that client library. Its basic deployment consists of serving the noVNC files from a web server and supplying a WebSocket proxy to the VNC server. It is the browser-facing user interface, not the VNC server itself.
websockify
websockify accepts WebSocket connections from noVNC and forwards their payload to the VNC TCP socket. Use it when the selected VNC server does not provide WebSocket support natively. It can serve the noVNC static files as well, or a separate web server can serve those files while websockify handles only the protocol bridge.
Caddy
Caddy is the public reverse proxy. A hostname in its configuration causes Caddy to manage HTTPS certificates when DNS and inbound connectivity are correct. Its reverse_proxy handler forwards ordinary HTTP requests and WebSocket upgrade requests to the noVNC endpoint, so no special WebSocket directive is normally needed.
Choose a container layout before deploying
There are two practical layouts. A single image can contain the GUI, desktop, VNC server, noVNC, and websockify, or those functions can be split into separate containers. Splitting them generally makes upgrades and isolation easier; combining them can be simpler for a personal workstation.
Recommended Free Tools
| Layer | Single-container approach | Split-service approach |
|---|---|---|
| GUI and desktop | One image starts the application, window manager and VNC server. | A dedicated application image exposes the VNC session. |
| noVNC/websockify | Runs in the same image or its entrypoint. | Runs as a gateway container on the same Docker network. |
| Network exposure | Publish the gateway port from the combined container. | Publish only the gateway service; leave the VNC service un-published. |
| Updates | Image rebuilds can affect every layer at once. | Gateway and application can be updated independently after compatibility checks. |
| Failure isolation | A process failure can affect the whole session. | The gateway can be restarted without recreating the GUI container. |
For a game tool, editor, emulator, or other interactive program, a minimal window manager usually consumes fewer resources than a full desktop environment. A full desktop can be easier for users who need panels, file managers, clipboard integration, and familiar settings. Select an image that documents how it starts the desktop and VNC server; old tutorials often rely on package versions or paths that no longer exist.

Step-by-step deployment
1. Prepare the GUI image
Choose or build an image containing four things: the GUI application, a lightweight desktop session, a VNC server, and a startup process that launches them in the correct order. Confirm which display number the image uses, which TCP port follows from that display, whether VNC authentication is enabled, and where the desktop’s startup script is located.
- Verify that the GUI program can start without a physical monitor.
- Set a deliberate desktop resolution rather than relying on a tiny default.
- Use a non-root account for the desktop where the image supports it.
- Persist application data and configuration in a Docker volume if the session must survive container replacement.
Do not assume that a package named in a 2020 tutorial has the same name or default configuration today. Recheck the base image, desktop packages, VNC startup command, and noVNC file location before treating the image as production-ready.
2. Create a private Docker network
docker network create gui-net
Attach the GUI service and the noVNC/websockify service to gui-net. Docker’s embedded DNS then resolves the GUI service by its chosen name, such as gui. The name is stable even when the container’s private IP changes.
3. Start the GUI and VNC service
Start the selected GUI image on gui-net, assigning it the service name gui. Configure its desktop and VNC server according to that image’s documented entrypoint. If the VNC server uses display :1, the gateway target is commonly gui:5901; use the port actually reported by the image rather than copying that number blindly.
At this stage, test connectivity from another container on gui-net. A successful TCP connection to the private VNC port proves that the desktop service is listening; it does not yet prove that the browser gateway or HTTPS proxy is configured.
4. Add noVNC and websockify
Run noVNC and websockify in the same container or in a second container attached to gui-net. A typical websockify invocation, when the distribution installs noVNC under the standard path, is:
websockify --web=/usr/share/novnc 6080 gui:5901
This serves the noVNC files on port 6080 and forwards WebSocket connections to the VNC service named gui. Package layouts vary, so verify the installed noVNC directory and the gateway’s listening port. Some noVNC packages expose a path such as /vnc.html; others provide a redirect or a different landing page.

Keep the gateway’s port reachable from Caddy. If Caddy is on the host, bind the gateway to a host-only address. If Caddy is another container, do not publish the gateway at all; connect both containers to gui-net and address the gateway by service name.
5. Publish only the gateway when Caddy runs on the host
If Caddy runs directly on the host, publish the noVNC port to the loopback interface rather than every interface. The exact Docker option is:
-p 127.0.0.1:6080:6080
That mapping makes the gateway available to host-level Caddy while keeping port 6080 off the LAN and public interfaces. Do not add a host mapping for the VNC port unless you have a specific administrative reason and a separate firewall policy.
6. Configure Caddy as the HTTPS edge
Create a DNS record for the hostname you intend to use and point it to the host running Caddy. The simplest host-level Caddyfile is:
gui.example.com {
reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:6080
}
Reload Caddy using the service-management method appropriate to your operating system. Caddy should obtain a certificate when the hostname resolves correctly and ports 80 and 443 can reach the server. The reverse proxy preserves the WebSocket upgrade required by noVNC.
When Caddy runs as a container on gui-net, target the gateway’s Docker service name instead:
gui.example.com {
reverse_proxy novnc:6080
}
In this arrangement, publish ports 80 and 443 from Caddy, but leave both the gateway’s HTTP port and the VNC port internal to Docker. Make sure the Caddy container can read the certificate storage location and that its network is attached to the gateway network.

7. Open and authenticate the session
Visit https://gui.example.com in a current browser. If the noVNC service does not redirect to its client automatically, open the path exposed by that installation, commonly /vnc.html. Enter the VNC password when prompted. The desktop should appear in the browser and the GUI application should be visible in that session.
Authentication has two layers: the VNC password protects the desktop protocol, while an identity-aware proxy or application authentication protects the public HTTPS endpoint. Use both where feasible. A certificate alone encrypts traffic but does not decide who is allowed to open the session.
Host Caddy versus containerized Caddy
| Decision | Caddy on the host | Caddy in Docker |
|---|---|---|
| Proxy target | 127.0.0.1:6080 when the gateway is loopback-published. |
novnc:6080 or another Docker service name. |
| Network design | The host bridges the public listener to the gateway. | Only Caddy needs public port mappings; internal services stay on the Docker network. |
| Certificate storage | Managed by the host service account. | Stored in a persistent volume mounted into the Caddy container. |
| Operational trade-off | Integrates with an existing host service manager and firewall. | Keeps the proxy configuration and dependencies in the same deployment system as the application. |
Neither placement is inherently safer. The important controls are a private VNC path, a narrowly scoped published interface, valid certificate management, and authentication before an unknown user reaches the desktop.
Security checklist for a public endpoint
- Do not publish the raw VNC port: let websockify reach it over the private Docker network.
- Bind published ports deliberately: Docker publishing normally listens on all interfaces unless you constrain the address.
- Use HTTPS: Caddy’s managed certificate prevents VNC credentials and framebuffer data from crossing the internet unencrypted.
- Add access control: use strong VNC credentials and, where appropriate, an identity-aware access layer or VPN before Caddy.
- Limit the desktop account: remove unnecessary administrative privileges and avoid storing secrets in the session.
- Separate users: one shared VNC desktop is not a multi-user isolation boundary.
- Patch the image: rebuild the GUI, desktop, VNC and gateway layers when their base packages receive security fixes.
- Log access: retain Caddy and gateway logs long enough to investigate unexpected connections without logging passwords.
A VPN or private identity proxy is preferable when the session is for a small, known group. A public HTTPS endpoint is useful when browser access from changing networks is essential, but it increases the importance of authentication, rate limiting and prompt patching.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance and usability tuning
Remote GUI work is sensitive to both bandwidth and latency. A large desktop at a high frame rate sends more pixel data, while animation, video playback and rapidly changing game scenes create more updates than a static editor. Start with a modest resolution, then increase it only when the client network and host have headroom.

Display size
Set the virtual desktop to the smallest size that keeps the application’s controls usable. A 1920-by-1080 session is convenient but can be wasteful on a phone or a slow connection. Match the VNC desktop to the browser window when the image supports dynamic resizing.
Compression and colour depth
VNC implementations expose different encoding and compression settings. Prefer a setting that reduces bandwidth on slow links, but test text clarity and input responsiveness. Highly compressed modes can increase CPU use in the container; uncompressed modes can saturate the uplink.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Frame rate and animation
Disable desktop effects, animated backgrounds and unnecessary compositing in a lightweight window manager. For a GUI tool, a stable pointer and readable text matter more than a high frame rate. Games or video applications may require more throughput and will show the limitations of a browser-based VNC path sooner.
Input, clipboard and audio
Test keyboard layouts, modifier keys, clipboard transfer and browser focus before relying on the session for work. Clipboard and audio support vary by VNC server, desktop and noVNC build; do not assume that a feature present in one image is available in another.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The browser shows a blank page or cannot load the client
- Confirm that the gateway is serving the noVNC static files and that the URL path is correct.
- Check Caddy’s upstream address and verify that the gateway port is listening.
- Inspect browser developer tools for failed JavaScript or WebSocket requests.
- Verify that the Caddy hostname resolves to the correct server and that the certificate covers that hostname.
noVNC loads, but the WebSocket connection fails
- Confirm that websockify is running and listening on the port Caddy targets.
- Check that Caddy and the gateway share a network path; a host loopback address is not reachable from a container unless it is explicitly routed.
- Ensure the websockify target uses the GUI service name and the VNC port actually configured by the image.
- Review proxy and gateway logs for an HTTP upgrade request that was rejected before it reached websockify.
The gateway cannot reach TigerVNC
- Check that both services are attached to
gui-net. - Resolve the GUI service name from inside the gateway container.
- Confirm that TigerVNC is listening on the container network interface, not only on loopback.
- Verify the display-to-port mapping; display
:1commonly means5901, but the image may choose another display.
The desktop appears, but the application is missing
The VNC server may be healthy while the GUI process exits during startup. Read the container logs, check the desktop startup script, and launch the program manually inside the session. Missing X11 libraries, an incorrect working directory, permissions on a mounted volume, or a process that expects a physical GPU are common image-level causes.
The session is slow or disconnects
- Reduce resolution and desktop effects.
- Lower the frame rate or choose a more bandwidth-efficient VNC encoding.
- Measure whether CPU is saturated by compression or by the GUI application itself.
- Check packet loss and latency on the client network.
- Keep Caddy, websockify and TigerVNC logs separate so a proxy timeout is not confused with an application crash.
Operations, upgrades and recovery
Keep the Caddyfile, Docker network definition, image references and persistent volume declarations under version control. Record the VNC display and port, gateway path, authentication method and certificate storage location. This turns a failed container replacement into a documented recovery rather than a rediscovery exercise.
Upgrade one layer at a time in a staging hostname or isolated network. First verify that the GUI image still starts its desktop and VNC server; then verify noVNC and websockify compatibility; finally reload Caddy and test the browser path. Because older tutorials may use obsolete package names, image tags or Caddy syntax, validate every upgrade against the current image documentation and browser behavior.
For recovery, recreate the gateway without touching the application volume, then reconnect it to the same Docker network and service name. If the GUI container must be rebuilt, preserve its application data separately from the container filesystem. Keep an emergency private path, such as a VPN-accessible administrative VNC connection, rather than exposing the VNC port permanently to the internet.

| Situation | Recommended arrangement | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One administrator on a trusted network | Private Docker network, noVNC gateway and Caddy reachable through a VPN. | Reduces public exposure while retaining browser convenience. |
| Several authorized users on changing networks | Public Caddy HTTPS endpoint with strong authentication or an identity-aware access layer; VNC remains private. | Users can connect from ordinary browsers without opening the VNC port. |
| Lowest resource use | Minimal window manager, conservative resolution and separate gateway container. | Leaves more CPU and memory for the GUI application and compression. |
| Native WebSocket-capable VNC server | Use its native WebSocket endpoint if it is maintained and compatible with noVNC; otherwise retain websockify. | Removes one bridge process, but compatibility and authentication still need testing. |
| Frequent image changes | Split GUI/VNC and noVNC/websockify services with persistent application volumes. | Gateway updates and application updates can be rolled back independently. |
Bottom line
Docker supplies the isolated GUI and VNC session, noVNC supplies the browser client, websockify bridges WebSockets to the VNC TCP socket, and Caddy supplies the public HTTPS front door. Publish only the gateway, keep TigerVNC on a private Docker network, authenticate before the desktop appears, and verify image paths, display ports, Caddy syntax and browser behavior before production use. That arrangement provides remote GUI access without making the raw VNC service an internet-facing endpoint.
