Palworld Console Server: Why Friends Can’t Connect and How to Fix It

Xbox and PS5 players join Palworld dedicated servers through Community Server, not the direct IP form. This guide fixes missing listings, crossplay filters, ports, firewalls, version mismatches and same-network Hairpin NAT failures.

Xbox and PS5 players cannot join a Palworld dedicated server through the Steam-style IP-and-port form. They must find a server published in the in-game Community Server list. If the server is missing, the usual causes are a missing -publiclobby startup option, a CrossplayPlatforms list that excludes a friend’s platform, incorrect advertised or listening ports, firewall or router rules, version mismatches, or a router without Hairpin NAT when the player is on the same home network.

First, identify how each player is connecting

Palworld has two different dedicated-server connection paths. Confusing them is the fastest way to diagnose the wrong problem.

Player or server path How the player connects What the server must provide
Xbox or PS5 console Open Join Multiplayer Game, choose Community Server, and search the exact server name. The dedicated server must be published as a community server and include the console platform in CrossplayPlatforms.
Steam or Mac client Use the dedicated-server IP-and-port connection form. The public address, advertised port and reachable listening port must agree with the router and firewall configuration.
Client-hosted co-op world Join through the game’s normal co-op or invitation flow. The host’s game session must be available; this is not the same as a community-listed dedicated server.

A console player who is given the dedicated server’s IP address has not been given a usable console connection method. Conversely, a Steam or Mac player can use the direct address form even when the server is not convenient to find in the community list.

What a console-friendly Palworld server requires

  • Community publication: start the server with -publiclobby. This is the official setup option that publishes a dedicated server to the community-server list.
  • Platform permission: retain every intended platform in CrossplayPlatforms. The current 1.0.4 argument reference shows CrossplayPlatforms=(Steam,Xbox,PS5,Mac) as the default example.
  • Correct listening port: the server process must listen on the port configured with -port (commonly represented as -port=8211 in the official reference).
  • Correct advertised endpoint: PublicIP and PublicPort tell clients where the server is advertised. PublicPort does not change the port on which the process listens.
  • Reachable network path: the host firewall, router forwarding rule or hosting-provider firewall must allow traffic to the actual listening port.
  • Compatible builds: the game clients and server should be updated to the same current build before network troubleshooting.

Step-by-step fix for friends who cannot join

1. Confirm the client’s connection path

  1. On Xbox or PS5, launch Palworld and open Join Multiplayer Game.
  2. Select Community Server, not a direct IP-and-port field. Search for the exact server name, including punctuation and spaces.
  3. On Steam or Mac, use the dedicated-server IP-and-port form when appropriate. A Steam or Mac player can also search the community list if the server is public, but the two methods are technically separate.
  4. If a console does not show the expected Community Server menu, update the game first and verify that the client is running the current build.

This first check separates a missing-listing problem from a reachability problem. If a console cannot find the server at all, changing a direct IP address will not solve it.

2. Publish the dedicated server with -publiclobby

Stop the dedicated-server process before changing its startup arguments. Add -publiclobby to the command or launcher entry, then start the process again. A typical argument line might include -publiclobby -port=8211; use the executable and launcher syntax appropriate to your installation.

The server must be restarted after startup arguments or settings are changed. A server that was started without -publiclobby can be healthy and reachable for a direct connection while remaining invisible to console players, because it has not completed the community-server publication step.

After starting, allow time for registration before deciding that publication failed. Search the exact configured name rather than a shortened nickname, and check the server’s startup output for bind, registration or configuration errors.

3. Check CrossplayPlatforms in PalWorldSettings.ini

Open the server’s PalWorldSettings.ini and inspect the platform list. For a server intended for all platforms named in the current 1.0.4 reference, it should contain:

CrossplayPlatforms=(Steam,Xbox,PS5,Mac)

Use a deliberate subset only when you intend to exclude a platform. For example, a list that contains Steam but omits Xbox will prevent Xbox friends from joining even when the server appears correctly to Steam players. Make sure the spelling and platform names match the documented values; do not substitute console marketing names or account-service names.

4. Separate the listening port from the advertised port

Three values are commonly confused:

  • -port controls the local port on which the dedicated-server process listens. The official argument reference commonly represents the default as -port=8211.
  • PublicIP is the public address advertised to players.
  • PublicPort is the port advertised to players. It does not reconfigure the process’s listening socket.

Write down the actual -port value and verify every layer against it:

  1. Confirm the server process is listening on that port on the host machine.
  2. Confirm the host operating system’s firewall rule allows the traffic required by the Palworld server on that port.
  3. Confirm the router forwards the external traffic to the correct internal host and listening port.
  4. Confirm the configured PublicIP is the current public address and that PublicPort points players to the reachable external endpoint.
  5. If you changed the listening port, update the forwarding and firewall rules as well as the server arguments, then restart the process.

Changing only PublicPort cannot make a server listen on a new port. A listing can therefore appear with an address that looks correct while connection attempts still fail because the router forwards to a different port than the process uses.

5. Check the host firewall, router and hosting-provider rules

A community listing is an advertisement, not proof that packets can reach the server. On a home host, inspect both the computer’s firewall and the router’s forwarding rule. On a rented machine, inspect the operating-system firewall and the hosting provider’s network or security-group rule.

  • Forward traffic to the machine that actually runs the Palworld process, not to a changing local address.
  • Use the same listening-port number confirmed in the server arguments.
  • Remove conflicting rules that forward the advertised port to another device.
  • Check that the server process is running after every reboot; a published name cannot connect to a stopped process.
  • Do not expose unrelated administration services while troubleshooting the game port.

If players outside the home can connect but a player inside cannot, do not immediately undo a working forwarding rule. That pattern points to a separate Hairpin NAT limitation described below.

6. If the server is missing from Community Server, force a clean registration check

When no console can find the name, work through these checks in order:

  1. Stop and restart the dedicated server with -publiclobby present.
  2. Wait for the server to register, then search the exact name in Community Server.
  3. Verify PublicIP and PublicPort rather than assuming they were updated automatically after an ISP or router change.
  4. Confirm the listening port, forwarding rule and firewall rule all refer to the same endpoint.
  5. Confirm that each intended platform is present in CrossplayPlatforms.
  6. Update the game clients and dedicated server to the same current build, then restart once more.

A server can be online for a host or direct-connect player yet absent from the console list if publication, platform filtering or advertised-address settings are wrong.

7. Diagnose the same-network failure: Hairpin NAT

The most distinctive symptom is that a friend outside the house connects successfully while a console or PC connected to the same home network cannot. In that case, the server and public listing may be configured correctly; the router may simply be unable to send an internal client back to the home server through its own public address.

“If your router does not support Hairpin NAT, you will not be able to connect to community servers hosted within the same network.”

That statement appears in Palworld’s official Server Guide. Hairpin NAT is also called NAT loopback on some router interfaces. The failure is not fixed by changing the community-server name or repeatedly reinstalling the client.

  • Access Batman's training modules on the Bat Computer and take part in various challenges including battle arenas, races and detective mazes.
  • Visit the Hall of Justice, the Batcave, and the Justice League Watchtower to access shops, trophy rooms, and the hero and vehicle customizers.

To confirm the diagnosis:

  1. Test the server from a genuinely external connection, such as a friend’s home network or another suitable network.
  2. Compare that result with a client on the host’s own LAN.
  3. If external access works and only the internal client fails, check whether the router offers a Hairpin NAT or NAT-loopback setting.
  4. If the router cannot provide that function, use a hosting arrangement outside the home network or another network design that gives local players a supported route. For console clients, the reliable discovery path remains the Community Server list.

Do not treat a successful connection from outside the house as evidence that every device on the LAN must also work. Hairpin behavior is a router capability, independent of the server’s publication status.

8. Align game and server versions

Update Palworld on every client and update the dedicated-server installation before spending time on advanced port debugging. A client and server on different builds can fail to join even when the listing and network path are correct.

The official pages used for these settings are versioned and can change. The 1.0.4 reference is the current basis for the platform example above; re-check the live official argument reference and Server Guide when a later game build changes labels or defaults.

Choose the right server type for your group

Palworld’s official documentation distinguishes a dedicated server, which hosts the world independently of a player’s game client, from a community server, which is the list-published form that console players can discover. The following comparison helps explain why a setup that works for a small co-op group may not work for console friends.

Characteristic Client-hosted co-op world Private dedicated server Public community dedicated server
Must a player’s game remain online? Usually yes; the host session controls availability. No; the dedicated process hosts the world independently. No; the dedicated process hosts the world independently.
Can console players discover it in-game? Through the normal co-op or invitation flow, not the dedicated community listing. Not through the Community Server list unless it is published as a community server. Yes, through Join Multiplayer Game > Community Server when registration succeeds.
Is a direct IP-and-port field available? Not the dedicated-server path. Available to Steam and Mac clients; console players use the community path. Available to Steam and Mac clients; console players use the community path.
Router and firewall work Often limited to the host’s co-op networking requirements. Required when friends must reach a home-hosted process from outside. Required, plus correct public-listing, platform and advertised-endpoint settings.
When is external hosting preferable? Rarely necessary for a short session. Useful when the home connection cannot accept inbound traffic or the world must stay online. Useful when you need reliable uptime, a stable public address or a network that supports community publication without home-router limitations.

Home hosting versus a VPS or game-server host

A home server can work when the router permits the required forwarding, the public address remains usable, the machine stays powered on and the host is comfortable maintaining firewall and configuration settings. It is a poor fit when the ISP or router prevents inbound access, when Hairpin NAT is unavailable for local players, or when the group expects an always-on world without leaving a home computer running.

  • Perform new and powerful moves as “Big-fig” characters like Hulk and Abomination. Leave a path of destruction as you smash through Lego walls and throw cars using hyper strength.

A provider-hosted dedicated server or VPS moves the process to a network designed for inbound services. You still have to configure -publiclobby, CrossplayPlatforms, -port, PublicIP and PublicPort, and you still need to keep the game build aligned. Hosting elsewhere removes home-router Hairpin NAT as a local failure point, but it does not eliminate platform filtering or incorrect server arguments.

Choose based on the requirement that is actually failing:

  • Choose client hosting when the group is small, sessions are occasional and the host can remain in the game.
  • Choose a private dedicated process when the world must continue without a player’s game client, but console discovery is not required or you are prepared to publish it correctly.
  • Choose a public community dedicated server when Xbox or PS5 players need in-game discovery and the world should remain available independently of a player session.
  • Choose external hosting when home inbound networking or Hairpin NAT is the blocker, or when stable uptime matters more than operating the machine yourself.

A final configuration checklist

Before asking friends to try again, confirm each item once:

  • The server was stopped, configured and restarted with -publiclobby.
  • Console players are using Join Multiplayer Game > Community Server and searching the exact name.
  • CrossplayPlatforms includes every intended platform, such as Steam,Xbox,PS5,Mac for the current 1.0.4 reference example.
  • The process is listening on the port set by -port; the commonly documented default representation is -port=8211.
  • The router and firewall rules target that listening port and the correct host machine.
  • PublicIP identifies the current public address and PublicPort advertises the reachable endpoint; neither is being mistaken for the other.
  • The server has had time to register after restart, and the name is being searched exactly.
  • Every client and the dedicated server run the same current game build.
  • If only a player on the host’s LAN fails, Hairpin NAT has been tested rather than changing unrelated server settings.

Most console connection failures become straightforward once the connection path is identified: publish the dedicated server, allow the correct platforms, keep the advertised and listening endpoints distinct, and treat same-network failures as a possible Hairpin NAT limitation rather than as proof that the server is offline.
