If you’re traveling, Steam generally keeps your existing store country and its prices. If you’ve moved or are living abroad long-term, you can change your store country at checkout—but only to the country where you currently reside, using a local payment method. Steam limits changes to once every three months and prohibits using a VPN or proxy to get around regional pricing or restrictions.
Traveling: keep your existing Steam store country
A trip abroad does not, by itself, change your Steam store country. The Store generally continues to show prices for the country on your account. To check that setting, open Steam Account Details; Steam says the country is based on where you made your first Steam purchase.
For ordinary purchases while traveling, use a payment method that matches your current store country. If you reach a different regional Store page through a link and see another currency, open the Store in the Steam application and try again.
If a purchase fails while you’re abroad
- For the specific error saying your Steam Wallet currency does not match the purchase currency, try paying with the payment instrument alone—such as a card or PayPal—instead of using Wallet funds. If it still fails, contact Steam Support.
- For other purchase errors, disable or remove proxy or VPN software, then try the Steam client if the website failed, or the website if the client failed. If the error continues, contact Steam Support and include the exact error message.
Moving or living abroad: change your store country at checkout
Steam allows a store-country update when your detected location differs from the country currently set on your account. Its requirement is that the new country be where you currently reside and that you have a local payment method you can use. The update is completed through a purchase, not by entering a country in your profile alone.

- Confirm that you currently reside in the new country and have a payment method from there that Steam accepts.
- While viewing your cart or completing checkout, select the new country when Steam offers the option.
- Complete a purchase with the local payment method. Steam says that purchase updates your account’s store country.
Steam permits a store-country change once every three months. If you regularly spend time in multiple countries, Steam recommends using the country of your primary residence. Payment methods offered can vary by country and are displayed at checkout.
Creating an account while traveling
If you are a new user away from your country of residence, Steam says you cannot temporarily set your store country to your home country while traveling. Set up the account and store country before your trip, or wait until you return to your country of residence.

Can a VPN change your Steam region?
No. Steam forbids attempts to bypass regional pricing or content restrictions. Steam says purchases made through anonymous proxy software will be declined, and accounts showing bypass behavior may be locked. Do not disguise your location with a VPN or proxy to buy from another region or redeem a restricted gift.
If a purchase is failing, removing VPN or proxy software is a troubleshooting step—not a way to switch stores. Use the store country and payment method that match your circumstances.

Store purchases, gifts, keys, and Wallet codes have different rules
- Games bought directly for yourself: Steam says most products purchased through its Store have no region restrictions.
- Gifts: A gift may be limited to certain redemption countries. Steam shows the eligible countries at checkout and in the gift description; restrictions can change. Check the details for that specific gift before buying.
- Third-party CD keys: Restrictions vary by publisher. Check the packaging or ask the retailer before buying. If a key is restricted in your country, contact the seller about a refund; Steam Support says it cannot remove the restriction.
- Steam Wallet codes and CD keys: Neither can be used to change your Steam store country. Local retailer codes may be a purchase option where available, but they do not change your account’s region.
