What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single file location for every Xbox app game. First check the Xbox app’s own management options. Many newer PC games use an accessible folder such as C:XboxGames<Game name>, while older or package-based titles may be protected inside C:Program FilesWindowsApps. If you see WindowsApps and receive “Access denied,” do not take ownership of the folder as a routine fix.
Check the Xbox app first
- Open the Xbox app for Windows.
- Open My Library and select the installed game.
- Open Manage or the game’s … menu.
- Look for Files, Browse, Open folder, or a similar option.
The exact label depends on the Xbox app version, Windows build, and game. Not every title provides a folder-browsing button. Using the app is safer than searching for or changing protected folders manually.

Many newer PC games built with Microsoft’s GDK flat-file installation model use an ordinary game directory. Check these locations in File Explorer:

- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
C:XboxGames<Game name>
D:XboxGames<Game name>
E:XboxGames<Game name>
Microsoft documents C:XboxGames as the default flat-file location. The Xbox app can use another drive, so check the root of every drive where you install games.
Under this model, game files generally have normal read and write access. That makes them easier to browse, move, repair, and modify, although designated executables can remain encrypted or protected. Mod support is also determined by the individual game.
See Microsoft’s Flat File Install documentation for the technical distinction between this model and other app packages.

What if the game is in WindowsApps?
Some older, UWP, or other Microsoft Store-style installations may use:
C:Program FilesWindowsApps
The equivalent folder may be on another drive if Windows apps were installed there. To see it in File Explorer, enable View > Show > Hidden items. However, finding the folder does not mean it is safe or intended for ordinary editing.
WindowsApps is hidden and protected by Windows. Games using this package model may block browsing, file replacement, or direct modification. Microsoft states that the benefits of flat-file installation do not apply to games shipped using other app models, including UWP.

Do not casually take ownership of WindowsApps. Microsoft Q&A guidance warns that changing its permissions can cause Microsoft Store apps or Windows apps to stop working. It can also interfere with updates, package registration, launch checks, or repair operations. Treat “Access denied” as a possible sign of a protected installation model—not simply as a permission problem.
Find the drive where the game is installed
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage.
- Open Advanced storage settings, if shown.
- Select Where new content is saved.
- Check the drive selected for new apps.
This identifies the drive Windows uses for Store-style installations, but it may not reveal the exact game folder. Existing games can remain on an older drive after you change the default. Check that drive’s root for XboxGames and, where relevant, WindowsApps.
You may also see folders such as .GamingRoot, WpSystem, or ModifiableWindowsApps. Their presence can reflect Xbox or Windows app storage behavior, particularly on secondary drives; it does not by itself identify the game’s playable files. Do not delete them manually.

Game files are not always save files
“Game files” can mean several different things:
- Installation files: executables, assets, configuration defaults, and packaged content.
- Save data: often stored in a Windows user-data location or synchronized through Xbox cloud services, not beside the installed game.
- Mod files: stored according to the game’s mod system and packaging model.
- Cached data: Xbox app, Gaming Services, shader, and temporary files that are not automatically safe to remove.
For saves or graphics settings, use the game’s own documentation or a title-specific guide. Do not infer the save location from the installation path.

- Confirm that the game supports PC mods.
- Check the Xbox app’s Manage page for Files, Mods, or an equivalent control.
- If the game uses an accessible
XboxGamesfolder, use the game’s documented mod directory or mod manager. - Back up any file before replacing it, and follow the developer’s instructions.
Xbox provides official guidance for supported PC mod functionality in its PC mods support page. A game being installed through the Xbox app does not guarantee that it supports mods, and a protected package should not be modified indiscriminately.

Move, repair, uninstall, and back up safely
Use the Xbox app’s Manage > Move, repair, verify, or uninstall controls when they are available. Do not drag an installed folder to another drive and expect Xbox, Gaming Services, licensing, and package registration to follow it.
Similarly, deleting a folder to free space can leave broken registration or orphaned data. Use the Xbox app or Settings > Apps > Installed apps to uninstall the game.
A copied installation folder is not necessarily a complete backup. Licensing, your Xbox identity, Gaming Services, package registration, encrypted executables, and the game’s save system can prevent a copied folder from launching on another PC. Back up saves according to the game’s documentation, and use the Xbox app to reinstall or move the program itself.
Troubleshooting
You cannot find C:XboxGames
- The game may be installed on another drive.
- The title may use
WindowsAppsor another package model. - The Xbox app may be configured with a different installation root.
- The installation may not have completed.
- You may be checking the wrong Windows account or drive.
Check each game drive’s root, then verify the installation in the Xbox app.
You can see the folder but receive “Access denied”
If the folder is under WindowsApps, the protection is probably intentional. Do not begin by changing ownership or permissions. Use the Xbox app’s repair, move, or reinstall controls instead.
The game will not launch, move, or repair
- Confirm that the game is genuinely installed rather than merely listed in your library.
- Restart the Xbox app and Windows.
- Check the configured installation drive and the available disk space.
- Use the Xbox app’s repair or verify option if offered.
- For Gaming Services failures, use Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool.
Do not manually delete WindowsApps, WpSystem, .GamingRoot, or package metadata as a first-line repair.
