In cloud gaming, the game runs on a remote provider-owned computer. That server renders the game and sends you an interactive video stream; your controller, keyboard, mouse, or touch input travels back to the server.

Services generally use one of three models:

1. NVIDIA GeForce NOW: best overall
GeForce NOW is the strongest choice for players who already own compatible PC games and care about image quality, high frame rates, and RTX features. NVIDIA says the service supports linked accounts from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PC Game Pass, and Ubisoft Connect, with more than 4,500 PC games in its catalog. That figure is provider-reported and does not mean every listed game is included or available to every user.
You must normally supply the game entitlement. Owning a Steam or Epic game does not guarantee that it can be streamed: publishers and storefronts determine eligibility, and the exact edition and launcher matter.
Plans and limits
NVIDIA identifies Free, Performance, and Ultimate plan categories. Premium members receive 100 hours of monthly playtime, with up to 15 unused hours rolling over. After reaching the allowance, users may buy additional hours or continue with a basic free-user experience until the allowance resets. This limit is easy to miss in older reviews and makes GeForce NOW less attractive for people who play heavily every month.
NVIDIA materials have cited Performance at $9.99 per month or $49.99 for six months, and Ultimate at $19.99 per month or $99.99 for six months. However, plan structures vary by region and NVIDIA has indicated that six-month Ultimate plans have been replaced by annual memberships for some users. Check the current U.S. checkout page before publication or purchase.
Ultimate provides access to RTX 5080-class rigs, and NVIDIA advertises up to 5K HDR at 120 frames per second with DLSS 4. Those are maximum advertised capabilities, not guaranteed output. Who should choose it?
- Players with compatible Steam, Epic, GOG, PC Game Pass, or Ubisoft games.
- Mac, Chromebook, handheld, low-powered PC, phone, or smart-TV users.
- Players prioritizing PC-like image quality over an included catalog.
- Anyone willing to check game support before subscribing.
Main drawback: GeForce NOW is not an all-you-can-play PC library. If you do not already own games, the subscription alone may not provide much value.

2. Xbox Cloud Gaming: best included library
Xbox Cloud Gaming is the best fit for players who want to subscribe and start playing without buying every title separately. It operates through Xbox Game Pass tiers that include cloud gaming and is particularly strong for Xbox first-party games and a broad console-style catalog.

Xbox lists support for Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected LG and Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and selected Meta Quest headsets. Supported free-to-play titles can be played with a free Microsoft account. Availability varies by title, device, and region; the complete Game Pass catalog is not necessarily cloud-enabled. Check the official Xbox Cloud Gaming page for current plans and supported devices.
Xbox is usually the better value for someone starting without a PC library. The trade-off is that streaming quality is generally less configurable than GeForce NOW, and games can leave the service or lose cloud eligibility. It is also not a general-purpose Windows gaming machine.
3. PlayStation Plus Premium: best for PlayStation fans
PlayStation Plus Premium is the obvious choice for PS4 and PS5 owners who want cloud streaming alongside Sony’s Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, game trials, online multiplayer, cloud storage, and other PlayStation benefits.
Sony’s U.S. page showed Premium at $19.99 monthly, $54.99 for three months, or $159.99 annually during the research window. Sony also lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection requirement and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those are minimum bandwidth figures, not guarantees of low latency or stable image quality. 4. Boosteroid: best alternative for unsupported PC games
Boosteroid is a bring-your-own-game service and is most useful when a specific PC game you own is unavailable on GeForce NOW. Its value depends heavily on whether the exact title, edition, storefront, and launcher are supported and whether its nearest data center provides a good route from your home.
Boosteroid can be a sensible second service for a PC library, but the available evidence is less consistent than for NVIDIA, Xbox, and Sony. Do not rely on generic catalog counts or average-latency claims. Confirm your games and test performance in your region before committing to a long plan.
5. Amazon Luna: best for Prime and Fire TV users
Amazon Luna’s strongest case is convenience. Prime members and Fire TV households may find it an inexpensive, simple way to play casually without buying a console. Its controller and living-room integration are also appealing.

“Game library” is not interchangeable with “games you own.” A PlayStation license normally does not transfer to Steam, Xbox, Epic, or GeForce NOW. DLC, deluxe editions, cross-save, cross-progression, mods, anti-cheat, and launcher requirements can also differ.
Best service by device
- Mac or low-powered laptop: GeForce NOW if your games are supported; Xbox Cloud Gaming if you want included games.
- Phone or tablet: Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce NOW, preferably with a controller. iOS play may use a browser rather than a native app, depending on the service.
- Fire TV: Xbox Cloud Gaming or Luna. Check the exact Fire TV model and controller requirements.
- Smart TV: Xbox Cloud Gaming or Luna where the model and operating-system version are supported. TV apps may have different resolution, input, and feature limits.
- Handheld: GeForce NOW for compatible PC games; Xbox Cloud Gaming for an included catalog.
- PlayStation: PlayStation Plus Premium, especially if you already pay for online multiplayer.
What matters more than advertised resolution
A fast internet connection alone does not make cloud gaming responsive. The decisive factors include latency to the data center, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, upload stability, bitrate fluctuations, local congestion, ISP routing, server load, and your display’s resolution and refresh rate.

NVIDIA lists a requirement of less than 80 ms network latency to an NVIDIA data center for its documented requirements. Sony lists 5 Mbps minimum bandwidth and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Treat both as requirements, not promises of a good experience.
For best results, use Ethernet or strong 5 GHz/6 GHz Wi-Fi, avoid congested networks, and test at your normal evening play time. Wired or Bluetooth controller behavior, keyboard-and-mouse support, touch controls, TV limitations, and game-specific input support can also change the experience.

- Run the provider’s network test.

Cloud gaming versus remote play and cloud PCs
Remote Play streams from your own PC or console, so you retain control of your installed games but must leave that hardware powered and connected. Options include Steam Link, PlayStation Remote Play, and Xbox Remote Play.
A cloud PC such as Shadow rents you a full Windows machine. It is more flexible for unsupported games, mods, launchers, tools, and desktop applications, but usually costs more, requires more setup, and may require separate game purchases. Choose it when you need a computer, not merely a managed game-streaming service.
Is cloud gaming cheaper than a console or gaming PC?
Sometimes, but there is no universal answer. Compare the full cost: subscription, games you must purchase, controller, streaming hardware, optional extra hours, and the number of years you expect to subscribe. A bring-your-own-game service can be cheaper if you already own a library; a Game Pass subscription can be better value if you need included games.
