In Minecraft Java Edition, add a death counter with the deathCount scoreboard criterion, then show it in the sidebar. Bedrock Edition can display a scoreboard too, but its dummy objective does not count deaths automatically; it needs separate death-detection logic.
Java Edition: make an automatic death counter
Run these commands in chat, one at a time:
/scoreboard objectives add deaths deathCountcreates an objective nameddeathsthat tracks player deaths./scoreboard objectives setdisplay sidebar deathsdisplays that objective in the sidebar.
Use the same internal objective name, deaths, in both commands. The deathCount criterion is what makes the counter track deaths without a separate manual increment command. Java command references also describe custom:deaths as a death-related criterion; use the simpler deathCount setup above unless you need a specific statistic.

Bedrock Edition: display a score, then add death detection
Bedrock uses a dummy objective, which stores a score but does not automatically detect deaths. Create and display the objective with:

/scoreboard objectives add deaths dummy "Deaths"/scoreboard objectives setdisplay sidebar deaths
This creates a visible score only. To make it count deaths, add separate event-detection logic that increments the relevant player’s score. That logic may involve command blocks or functions, but the official documentation cited here does not establish a single universal death-detection recipe for every Bedrock version and world. Check any design against the target version and test it in the intended world.

Choose a display and setup method
- Sidebar: A persistent, easy-to-see display; the commands above use this slot.
- Other display slots: Scoreboards can also be shown in the player list or below a player’s name where supported. Exact syntax and availability can vary by edition and game version.
- Where to run commands: Scoreboards can be managed through chat, command blocks, functions, or a combination. Chat is sufficient for the basic objective and display setup; an automated Bedrock workflow may require additional command logic.
Permissions and common fixes
Microsoft’s Bedrock scoreboard command reference lists cheats and the Game Directors permission level as requirements for the command. If a command is unavailable, check world permissions and whether commands are enabled.
- Sidebar is missing: Confirm that the objective was created successfully and that
setdisplayuses its exact internal name:deaths. - Bedrock score stays unchanged: The objective alone does not detect deaths. Confirm that your separate event logic runs and increments the intended player’s score.
- Commands differ or fail: Check the command syntax for your edition and current game version; do not use Java’s
deathCountcriterion as a Bedrock objective.
