Choose what the overlay should display
“Now playing” can mean a song title, a game title, or a manually updated status. The method depends on where that information comes from. A browser overlay can show only the data its provider can access; a music overlay does not automatically identify a game or read arbitrary system audio.
- Music metadata: Choose a service whose documented input supports your music player. Now Playing documents a desktop app connected to DJ software for track information; that does not establish compatibility with every game or music player. See its OBS overlay setup guide.
- Game title or session status: Confirm that your chosen tool receives that specific game metadata. If it does not, use a manually controlled text label instead of assuming automatic detection.
- Manual label: An OBS text source can display a title or status that you update yourself. It is simple, but it will not change automatically unless you update it.
Add a hosted overlay in OBS
- Configure the overlay and copy its URL. Use the provider’s setup page to create the desired display. Check what data it reads and whether its URL is account-specific; treat a private URL like a credential.
- Open the scene used for the YouTube stream. In OBS, find the scene whose composed output includes your gameplay. In Sources, select + → Browser, create the source, and paste the overlay URL. OBS Browser Source displays a webpage in a scene and is commonly used for overlays. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Set the browser dimensions. Use the provider’s recommended width and height. Now Playing gives 1920×1080 as its standard 1080p example and advises matching a different canvas when applicable; consult its setup instructions for the overlay you use.
- Layer and position it. In the Sources list, put the overlay above the gameplay source so it is visible. Use the OBS preview and transform controls to move and resize it. Keep it clear of the game’s HUD, subtitles, minimap, and important action. Now Playing suggests a bottom position for gaming layouts; its customization guide explains its placement options.
- Test the output before relying on it. Check that the page loads and the displayed information updates. Now Playing documents a simulated-track Test control and recommends refreshing the browser source if it appears stuck; see its dashboard guide. Make a local recording or a private/unlisted test stream if you need to confirm what reaches the encoded output and VOD.
- Replace a leaked URL. If your provider uses an account-specific overlay URL and it is exposed, follow the provider’s reset process and replace the URL in OBS. Now Playing says resetting a leaked URL disables the old one immediately, so update the browser source with the replacement.
OBS’s source guide was published January 11, 2022; labels or interface details may change. The source-ordering principle remains the key: the overlay must be above the gameplay layer to appear over it.
Make the 24/7 schedule compatible with YouTube VODs
A single uninterrupted stream lasting 24 hours or more is not a dependable way to create one complete YouTube archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it “may not be captured at all.” YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. If you need both continuous channel availability and durable VODs, plan shorter broadcasts comfortably below 12 hours, end each segment cleanly, and retain a local recording. Check the resulting archive and its overlay after each segment. YouTube says it can archive an under-12-hour stream; this is not a guarantee that every such stream will be captured.
Live DVR and the later VOD archive are separate. YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Check music rights separately from the overlay
A track label or attribution does not grant permission to broadcast the music. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights; archived content is also subject to the applicable agreement. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and make sure you have the rights required for both the live broadcast and any archive.
Fix common overlay problems
- The overlay is missing: Check that the Browser Source URL loads, that the source is enabled, and that it sits above the gameplay source in the Sources list. Confirm the OBS preview and canvas dimensions.
- The overlay is cut off or misplaced: Match its width and height to the provider’s guidance and your canvas, then reposition it in the preview. Avoid covering critical HUD elements.
- The displayed track or title is stale: Confirm the provider receives the metadata source you expect. For a browser overlay that appears stuck, the Now Playing dashboard guide recommends refreshing the browser source.
- The overlay works in preview but not in the VOD: Record locally or run a private/unlisted test to inspect the composed output. After a live segment, verify the archive itself rather than assuming the preview proves the VOD was captured.
- The account-specific URL was exposed: Reset it with the provider if that option is available, then replace the old URL in OBS. Now Playing says its reset disables the old URL immediately.
- The 24/7 broadcast has no complete archive: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use shorter segments and keep local recordings rather than relying on one long VOD.
