You can send a live camera feed from a Synology NAS to YouTube using Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature. That documented route is for cameras, not for looping prerecorded videos. If you want a 24/7 playlist of videos stored on the NAS, you need a separate encoder or streaming application that can read those files and publish continuously to YouTube.

The right setup depends on what “24/7 channel” means for you, plus your NAS model, DSM version, Surveillance Station version, and camera compatibility. This guide covers the camera workflow and what to verify for prerecorded video.

First choose your 24/7 source

What you want to broadcast Relevant route What to know
A live camera feed Surveillance Station Live Broadcast Synology documents sending selected live camera streams to YouTube. The feature requires a YouTube RTMP path and stream key, and supports H.264 video. Synology’s Live Broadcast help describes the feature.
Prerecorded videos saved on the NAS A separate encoder or streaming application It must read the NAS media, play or schedule it continuously, encode a YouTube-compatible stream, and recover from interruptions. The documented camera feature does not establish playlist looping or prerecorded-media broadcast.

Video Station is for managing and streaming video collections to supported client devices; that is not the same as publishing a YouTube live stream. Synology’s DSM 7.2 technical specification also says Video Station is unavailable on DSM 7.2.2. Check Synology’s Video Station specification for that distinction.

Check compatibility before configuring the camera route

Synology’s Live Broadcast help is for Surveillance Station version 8. Its menu names and feature availability may differ in other versions. Synology’s Surveillance Station specifications list RTMP over TCP among supported streaming tunnel formats and describe Live Broadcast as sending camera streams to YouTube, but the specification page is for DSM 7.4; availability and performance depend on the NAS and package. Review the Surveillance Station specifications for the relevant DSM context.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Identify your NAS model and DSM version.
  • Confirm that your installed Surveillance Station version includes Live Broadcast.
  • Check that your camera is supported by your particular NAS and Surveillance Station setup, and can provide a suitable H.264 stream.
  • Have access to the YouTube channel’s live-stream settings and stream key.
  • Make sure the NAS has a reliable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected stream.

Synology states: “The Live Broadcast application provides a simple interface that allows you to send live camera streams to YouTube.” The interface selects a camera and stream profile; it is not a general-purpose playlist publisher.

Send a camera feed to YouTube with Surveillance Station

  1. Enable Live Broadcast. In Surveillance Station, enable the Live Broadcast application. Exact navigation and labels depend on your installed package version; consult the help for that version.
  2. Set the broadcast status to on. Open Live Broadcast settings and turn the status on.
  3. Get YouTube’s ingest details. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, copy the server or RTMP path and the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the broadcast.
  4. Enter the path and key in Synology. Use the RTMP path and key in the Live Broadcast configuration, as described in Synology’s instructions.
  5. Select the camera and stream profile. Choose the camera to broadcast and its profile. Synology’s documentation specifies H.264 video for YouTube Live Broadcast; verify the selected camera profile meets that requirement.
  6. Test before relying on it. Start with a private or unlisted test if available in your YouTube setup. Check both the picture and audio in YouTube, then monitor stream health before making the broadcast public.

Do not assume the Synology feature accepts every YouTube ingest protocol. Synology’s cited instructions specify an RTMP path and key; they do not establish RTMPS support for every package version.

Set YouTube ingest quality for a stable stream

YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, for compatible encoders. It also recommends testing with representative motion and audio, checking your upload speed, monitoring stream health, using constant bitrate (CBR), and setting a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Follow the encoder settings your particular workflow exposes and YouTube’s current guidance: YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates.

Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec you are actually using; there is no single suitable setting for every stream. For one example, YouTube lists 4 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps. That figure applies to that row of YouTube’s guidance, not to every resolution or frame rate.

For a separate encoder workflow, YouTube also supports HLS ingest when the encoder is compatible and configured for its required segment and playlist settings. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it transmits video in segments. This does not mean Synology’s Live Broadcast feature supports HLS. See YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance before choosing it.

For prerecorded videos stored on the NAS

A NAS can store media without being able to publish that media as a continuous YouTube live stream. To build a prerecorded-video channel, use an encoder or streaming application only after confirming it works with your exact NAS and software setup. Test these requirements before treating it as a 24/7 solution:

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Before broadcasting camera footage or prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for every video, music track, and other included content. A stream being live, looping, or hosted on your own NAS does not itself establish permission to use the material. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your channel, especially if you plan to reuse or loop content. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist.

Keep the stream running and diagnose interruptions

A successful test does not prove that a stream will remain live indefinitely. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; the Synology documentation cited here does not promise continuous uptime. Plan for upload fluctuations, NAS or camera restarts, and power or network loss.

Symptom What to check Next step
YouTube does not receive a stream Whether Live Broadcast is enabled and on; whether the RTMP path and stream key are correct. Recheck the values in YouTube and Surveillance Station. If you replaced or reset the key, update the value in Synology.
Video fails or is incompatible The selected camera profile and whether it supplies H.264 video. Select a suitable H.264 profile and run another test. Confirm the camera and profile are supported by your setup.
Stream health is poor or the picture stalls Sustained upload capacity, stream bitrate, and YouTube’s health indicators. Test upload speed while other network use is representative; reduce the stream’s quality or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
The live stream stops after an interruption Whether the NAS, camera, or encoder reconnected, and whether YouTube is receiving the stream again. Check the device and network, then restart or re-enable the broadcast as needed. For prerecorded workflows, verify the encoder’s recovery behavior in a deliberate test.
Local video plays, but YouTube receives no playlist Whether the application only serves files to client devices rather than publishing a live stream. Use a separately verified encoder or streaming application for prerecorded content; local playback alone is not a YouTube broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to running the encoder on your NAS or a computer at home. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
