In WordPress, go to Settings → Privacy, choose Create New Page (or select an existing page and choose Use This Page), then edit and publish the draft. The generated text is only a starting point: you must adjust it for the data your site actually collects and place the finished page where visitors can find it, normally in the footer.

This guide explains the complete workflow for a video-game site, including what the WordPress helper can and cannot detect, the disclosures a useful policy needs, footer-link options, child-directed sites, consent requirements, and an ongoing review process.

1. Create or select the privacy-policy page
WordPress includes a privacy tool in the dashboard. Sign in with an account that can manage pages, then follow these steps:
- Open Settings → Privacy.
- Choose Create New Page to have WordPress generate a starter page, or select a page you already created and click Use This Page.
- Open the resulting page in the editor. Read every section, replace generic wording with facts about your site, add missing services, and remove statements that do not apply.
- Save your changes and click Publish (or update the selected existing page).
- Copy the page URL; you will use it when adding a footer or navigation link.
The exact controls and labels can vary slightly with your WordPress version or administration language. WordPress documents the current screen and its controls at Settings → Privacy screen.

If you already have a carefully written policy, selecting it with Use This Page avoids creating a duplicate. Make sure the selected page is published, publicly readable, and not blocked by a password, membership rule, or “discourage search engines” setting that would prevent ordinary visitors from opening it.
2. Understand what the WordPress draft does—and does not do
The helper collects policy text from WordPress core, the active theme, and participating plugins. It does not inspect every script, account, vendor, or external service operating on a site. A gaming site can therefore receive a plausible-looking draft while still omitting an analytics platform, advertising script, newsletter provider, embedded video, payment processor, comment service, or hosting arrangement.

A page existing at a predictable URL is not the same thing as legal compliance. The policy should describe actual processing, and the site must follow the choices and promises it makes. If your business handles sensitive information, serves several jurisdictions, profiles users, or runs a substantial community, obtain advice from a qualified privacy professional rather than relying on boilerplate.
3. Audit every way your gaming site handles personal data
Before editing the draft, make an inventory. Walk through the site as a visitor and inspect the plugins, theme settings, hosting dashboard, analytics account, advertising configuration, email tools, and embedded media. Record what is collected, why it is collected, who receives it, where it goes, and how long it is retained. This prevents a polished but inaccurate page.

Use the table as an investigation checklist, not as text to paste unchanged. Name only services that really operate on your site, and describe their role accurately. If a plugin offers several optional integrations, disclose the ones that are enabled rather than every feature it could provide.

Comments, forums, and moderation
Explain what happens when readers post comments, create profiles, upload screenshots, or contact moderators. State which fields are required, whether an IP address or device information is logged for spam and abuse prevention, who can view submissions, and when old material is removed. If comments are publicly visible, warn contributors not to publish information they do not want displayed.
Embeds and external players
Articles often embed trailers, livestreams, maps, social posts, or game-related widgets. An embed can cause a third party to receive a visitor’s IP address or set cookies when the page loads, even though the visitor never clicks the player. List the categories of embedded content you use, explain the associated transfer, and identify any click-to-load or consent control that delays loading.
Newsletters, alerts, and downloads
Describe the address collected for a newsletter, the messages sent, the delivery provider, unsubscribe method, and suppression process after an unsubscribe request. For demo files, wallpapers, mods, or other downloads, state whether the server records download logs, malware-scanning data, or an optional email address.
Giveaways, surveys, and reader submissions
If you run a contest, survey, review-copy request, or reader showcase, explain the extra fields collected, eligibility rules, judging or publication purpose, winner contact process, and deletion timetable. A separate promotion notice may contain detailed rules, but the privacy page should still describe the data processing and link to that notice when appropriate.

Accounts, purchases, and support
If visitors can create accounts or buy merchandise, tickets, subscriptions, or digital products, cover authentication data, order and billing records, fraud screening, payment-provider sharing, customer-support history, and any tax or accounting retention requirement. Never promise that your site deletes records that another party must legally retain.
5. Make the policy easy to find on every page
Publish the policy first, then add its URL to the footer or footer navigation. WordPress’s release guidance says the link should be added manually to every page; a site-wide footer is the practical way to accomplish that. See WordPress’s privacy and maintenance release guidance.
Classic themes
- Open Appearance → Menus and select the menu assigned to the footer location. The location name depends on your theme.
- Add the published privacy-policy page to that menu.
- Place it near other utility links, save the menu, and open the public site to confirm the footer displays it.
Block themes
- Open Appearance → Editor and edit the footer template part.
- Select the Navigation block, choose the footer navigation, and add the privacy-policy page.
- Save the template part, then test the link on an article page, the home page, and a page with a different template.
If your theme supplies a footer widget, customizer panel, or dedicated legal-links field instead, use that control. The important result is one visible, working link across the site, not a particular theme workflow. Also consider placing the link near a contact or terms link so visitors can identify it without searching.
6. Test the page and its link
Do a short release check after publishing:
- Open the public URL while logged out and verify that the page is not restricted.
- Click the footer link from the home page, a post, a category archive, and a page using another template.
- Test on a phone as well as a desktop browser; check that the footer is not hidden behind an overlay or consent banner.
- Confirm headings, lists, tables, and links are readable with keyboard navigation and a screen reader or browser accessibility tools.
- Check that the policy’s effective date, contact address, and request method are correct.
- Use a private browsing window to observe which cookies or scripts load before any consent choice, where your jurisdiction requires a choice before non-essential processing.
- Submit a harmless test request through the listed privacy contact and confirm that the responsible person receives it.
Keep a record of the page URL, publication date, owner, and the systems checked. This makes the next review faster and exposes changes that a WordPress-generated draft will not automatically catch.
7. Keep the policy accurate as the site changes
Assign an owner rather than assuming someone will notice a change. Set a review date and revisit the policy whenever you install or remove a plugin, add advertising or analytics, change a form, enable comments, alter hosting, launch a newsletter, begin selling something, or add a new embed. A scheduled review at least annually is a sensible operating practice, but a material change should trigger an earlier review.

Compare the policy with the live site, not just the WordPress plugin list. A theme update can add a feature; a marketing tag can be injected through a tag manager; and a third-party service can change its processing terms. Update the relevant disclosure, publish the revision, record the new effective date, and use the announcement method described in the policy for material changes.
8. Know when the built-in page is not enough
WordPress core does not itself provide a complete consent-management system. Its documentation notes that plugins may help collect consent where required, but adding a plugin does not automatically make a site compliant. A consent system may need to block non-essential scripts until a choice is made, record that choice, let visitors withdraw it, and pass the signal to forms, analytics, advertising, and embedded content.
If you evaluate a consent plugin or a policy service, compare the capabilities that matter to your processing rather than choosing from a generic feature list:

- Consent logging, versioning, withdrawal, and preference changes.
- Keyboard accessibility, screen-reader support, language options, and mobile behavior.
- Integrations with your forms, analytics, advertising, video, maps, and membership systems.
- Where consent records and scanned data are hosted.
- Update frequency, support quality, compatibility with your WordPress and theme versions, and total recurring cost.
Verify current compatibility and legal coverage before adopting any named tool. For complex or high-risk processing, specialist legal review remains more reliable than assuming a software setting answers every legal question.

That requirement is about visibility as well as wording. Do not bury the link in a secondary screen, rely only on a generic footer if a collection form has no nearby notice, or describe an adult audience when the service is actually child-directed. Determine whether COPPA and other age-related rules apply to your particular audience, data flows, and business model; obtain qualified advice where the answer is uncertain.
10. Troubleshoot common WordPress privacy-page problems
The Privacy screen is missing
Confirm that you are in the main dashboard and have permission to manage settings and pages. A role-restricted account, a managed installation, or an administration language can change what appears. Ask the site administrator to perform the setup or grant the necessary capability, then return to Settings → Privacy.
The generated page is empty or obviously generic
That is expected for services that do not provide WordPress privacy help text. Keep the relevant core sections, then add your own disclosures for every collection point and external processor identified in your audit. Do not fill gaps with guesses about a plugin’s behavior; check its enabled settings and documentation.
The footer link works in the editor but not publicly
Check that the page is published rather than a draft or private page, that the menu was saved to the active footer location, and that caching is not serving an older footer. Test a logged-out window and a second device. If only some templates omit the link, edit the footer template part or menu assigned to those templates.

The privacy policy itself should remain readable before a visitor makes a non-essential consent choice. Adjust the banner’s display and script-blocking rules so the legal page can load, while keeping the processing controls required for your audience and jurisdiction.
11. Final publication checklist
- The page is selected under Settings → Privacy or is the maintained existing policy page.
- All actual data categories and collection points are documented.
- Purposes, legal bases or consent explanations, recipients, retention, rights, transfers, security contact, and change notices are addressed.
- Cookies, analytics, comments, forms, newsletters, embeds, payments, accounts, and downloads match the live configuration.
- The policy is published and linked from the site-wide footer or equivalent navigation.
- The link and page work on desktop and mobile, including while logged out.
- An owner, effective date, and next review date are recorded.
- Consent controls, if needed, cover the scripts and services that actually run.
- Child-directed collection has been assessed separately, including the FTC’s visibility requirement where COPPA applies.
