1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTShock is the best starting point for a managed Terraria server because it supplies the security and administration layer that most communities need before adding any extra plugin. It combines anti-cheat controls, server-side characters, groups, permissions, item bans and a large command set. Build your server around those native controls first, then add a plugin only when it provides a capability TShock does not already cover.
The reliable installation path is simple: match the TShock release to your Terraria build, back up the existing server data, extract the release into a permanent directory, launch the server executable there, create an owner account, and design lower-privilege groups for moderators and players. The sections below show how to do that safely and how to evaluate additional plugins without damaging progression or exposing remote administration.

What TShock adds to a Terraria server
TShock is a server toolbox rather than a single cosmetic modification. Its project documentation describes it as “a toolbox for Terraria servers and communities.” In practical terms, it sits between the Terraria server process and the people running it, adding policy, moderation and automation features that a vanilla server does not organize in one permission system.
Its core feature set includes anti-cheat tooling, server-side characters, groups, permissions, item bans and extensive commands. That combination matters because a public server has several different risks at once: players may attempt prohibited items, moderators may need to intervene quickly, and administrators must be able to delegate routine tasks without giving every helper unrestricted control.

Think of additional plugins as optional extensions to this foundation. A plugin is worthwhile when it solves a clearly defined problem, respects the exact Terraria and TShock versions you run, exposes suitably narrow permissions and can be backed up and removed without putting worlds or player data at risk.
Check compatibility before installing or upgrading
TShock builds are tied to Terraria versions. The official releases page currently lists TShock 6.2.1 for Terraria 1.4.5.8. Treat that pairing as a compatibility statement for that release, not as a promise that every TShock build works with every Terraria client or server.

|---|---|---|
| Current release pairing | TShock 6.2.1 with Terraria 1.4.5.8 | Use this pairing only when your Terraria installation is 1.4.5.8; select a different TShock release when your server runs another Terraria version. |
| Upgrade backup requirement | Back up the complete installation, including tshock.sqlite and the tshock folder |
Make the backup before replacing files with a new release archive. |
Before downloading anything, identify the Terraria version used by the server process, not merely the version displayed by a player who is trying to connect. Then read the release notes for the matching TShock package. A client/server mismatch can look like a plugin failure even when the plugin itself is correctly configured.
What to preserve during an upgrade
- World files: preserve every world you intend to keep.
- Player and server data: preserve
tshock.sqlite, which stores TShock data such as accounts and permissions. - Configuration and extensions: preserve the entire
tshockfolder and any plugin files or configuration that you have added. - A rollback copy: keep the pre-upgrade directory intact until the new build has started successfully and players have connected.
A backup is useful only if it is separate from the directory you are about to overwrite. Copy the data to another disk or storage location and verify that the files can actually be opened before proceeding.
Install TShock in a persistent server directory
The getting-started documentation warns that launching TShock directly from inside a compressed archive does not create a persistent server. Settings can be lost when the process ends. Extract the package first, and always launch the executable from the extracted directory that will remain your server’s home.
- Confirm the version pairing. Check the official release information and choose the TShock archive that matches the Terraria server version you intend to run.
- Stop the existing server. Do not replace files while the server process is writing world, database or configuration data.
- Create a dedicated directory. Choose a permanent location with a clear name, separate from temporary downloads and compressed archives. This is the directory your service, scheduled task or start script should use later.
- Extract the archive completely. Do not execute files from the archive viewer. Extraction ensures that configuration, libraries and supporting folders are present on disk.
- Copy or create the world data. Put the worlds you intend to host where the server process can access them, retaining the original files as a backup.
- Launch the TShock server executable from that directory. The first run creates the persistent configuration and data structure in the directory rather than in a temporary archive location.
- Complete first-run setup. Follow the server’s initial prompts, create an owner account and record the credentials in a secure password manager. Avoid sharing the owner account with moderators.
- Stop and start once more. A clean restart confirms that settings survive the process ending. If configuration disappears after a restart, check that you are starting the same executable from the same extracted directory every time.
The exact launcher differs by operating system, but the principle is the same: the working directory must be the permanent extracted server directory. Running a second copy from another folder is a common way to create apparently missing settings or worlds.

Build groups around least privilege
TShock’s permission reference is granular enough to separate ordinary play, routine moderation and ownership. Start with the smallest useful set of permissions and add one capability at a time. This makes an accidental privilege much easier to identify and remove.
Suggested role boundaries
| Role | Appropriate responsibilities | Controls to keep restricted |
|---|---|---|
| Player | Normal gameplay and any quality-of-life commands your rules explicitly allow | Ban, world modification, item spawning, server shutdown and other administrative actions |
| Moderator | Player-focused moderation such as handling misconduct, communicating announcements and applying narrowly scoped interventions | Destructive world changes, unrestricted spawning, configuration changes and owner-level account management |
| Operator or owner | Server configuration, backups, upgrades, permission design and emergency recovery | Nothing should be delegated casually; use a separate account from the one used for everyday play |
The role names are an administrative design choice. What matters is the permission boundary behind each role. Review the permission matrix after every plugin installation because a plugin may add its own nodes or rely on a broad existing group.
Must-have capability: moderation and anti-cheat
For a public or semi-public server, moderation and anti-cheat are foundational rather than optional extras. TShock’s project scope explicitly includes anti-cheat tools, item bans, groups, permissions and extensive commands.
Use those controls to establish written rules before inviting players. Decide which items, projectiles or behaviors are prohibited, who can investigate a report and which moderator actions require an owner. A rule that cannot be enforced consistently will create more disputes than a smaller rule set that moderators can apply reliably.
Operational checklist
- Define prohibited items and projectiles before opening the server.
- Give moderators only the commands needed to investigate and respond to player reports.
- Keep ban and world-changing powers out of ordinary player groups.
- Record who can change the rules, permissions or item-ban policy.
- Test moderation actions with a non-owner account before going live.
Must-have capability: groups and granular permissions
Permissions are the main safety mechanism in a TShock server. The reference covers bans, broadcasts, building protection, world modification, teleports, spawning, server-side characters, saves and other actions. Treat each category as a separate decision instead of granting a broad “moderator” bundle automatically.
Permission areas to review
- Bans: decide who may issue, remove or manage player bans.
- Broadcasts: separate routine announcements from server-wide administrative notices.
- Building protection: determine who can protect areas or alter protection settings.
- World modification: reserve edits that change terrain or other persistent world state for trusted operators.
- Teleports: consider whether instant movement undermines exploration, events or a server economy.
- Spawning: restrict item or entity creation when the server depends on survival progression.
- Server-side characters: control who may upload or manage server-enforced character data.
- Saves: keep save and maintenance actions with operators who understand the backup and recovery plan.
When a moderator asks for a new power, grant the narrow permission that answers the request rather than moving the account into a higher group. Remove temporary permissions after an event or investigation ends.

Must-have capability: player convenience without destroying progression
The permission list represents warps, spawn and teleport controls, whispers, party chat and related commands. These features can make a survival community easier to use, especially when players are spread across large worlds, but convenience has a cost.
Evaluate each convenience feature against your rules
- Warps and spawn commands: useful for communities with a central hub, but decide whether travel should consume time or resources.
- Teleports: convenient for moderation and events; unrestricted use can bypass exploration, danger and infrastructure.
- Whispers and party chat: improve coordination without changing the world, so they generally have less impact on progression.
- Spawn-related powers: keep them away from normal players when items or entities can be created through them.
Document the intended use of every convenience command in the server rules. Players should know whether a teleport is a moderator rescue tool, an event feature or an everyday privilege.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Must-have capability: server-side characters and progression controls
Server-side character controls help a community enforce consistent progression rather than accepting every character state supplied by a client. The permission reference includes server-side character upload and management controls, along with permissions affecting banned items and projectiles.
Decide first whether your world is intended to be tightly progression-focused or relaxed and social. In a progression-focused world, restrict character-management permissions, define the banned-item policy before launch and make moderators follow the same rules as players. In a relaxed world, you can allow more convenience while still keeping owner-level changes auditable.
Questions to answer before enabling these controls
- Who may upload or manage a server-side character?
- Which items and projectiles are banned, and who may change that list?
- What happens when a player’s character conflicts with the server’s progression rules?
- Where is the database and character data backed up before a policy change?
How to decide whether an additional plugin is worth installing
Do not start with a list of names. Start with the gap you need to close, then compare candidates on five axes.
- Exact compatibility: confirm that the plugin supports your Terraria version and the precise TShock build. A plugin that worked on an older release may fail after an upgrade even if the feature description is unchanged.
- Permission granularity: inspect the plugin’s permission nodes. Prefer a plugin that can separate read-only, player, moderator and owner actions instead of exposing one unrestricted command.
- Effect on progression and economy: identify whether it grants teleportation, item creation, world edits or other powers that change the value of exploration and resources.
- Operational overhead: determine where the plugin stores configuration and data, how it behaves during shutdown, and how those files fit into your backup and recovery process.
- Built-in alternative: check whether TShock already provides the feature through a permission or command. A native capability usually means fewer compatibility and maintenance points.
Install one plugin at a time on a copy of the server. Start the copy, test the feature with accounts representing each role, stop it cleanly and inspect the resulting files. Only then move the plugin to the live directory and add its data to the regular backup set.

Remote administration with REST
TShock’s REST documentation describes authenticated routes for raw command execution, MOTD access, server shutdown and other management functions. REST permissions include tshock.rest.command and tshock.rest.maintenance, with separate nodes for configuration, broadcasts, kicks, bans, mutes, kills, events and player information.
Use a scoped automation account
- Define the automation task. Decide whether the client needs player information, broadcasts, moderation actions, maintenance or configuration access.
- Grant only the required REST nodes. Do not assign
tshock.rest.commandmerely because a script might need it later; raw command execution is broader than a single-purpose route. - Protect the token as an administrative secret. Store it outside public scripts, chat messages and client-side mods. Rotate it when staff access changes or exposure is suspected.
- Test with a non-owner account. Verify that the client can perform its intended action and receives a denial for actions outside its scope.
- Plan for revocation. Keep a record of which automation uses each token so you can disable one integration without changing every administrator credential.
Remote access increases convenience and increases the impact of a leaked credential. Treat REST permissions like human permissions: narrow, documented and reviewed after every change.

If settings vanish after an upgrade, the most likely operational causes are launching from a different directory, failing to restore the database or starting the wrong executable. Stop the process, return to the preserved backup and identify which directory the service actually uses before making another change.
Troubleshooting common TShock and plugin problems
Settings reset after shutdown
Running from inside the compressed archive or from a temporary extraction location can prevent persistent settings. Extract the package into the permanent server directory and make every launcher use that same working directory.
Players cannot connect after an upgrade
Recheck the Terraria version against the TShock release pairing. If the server and clients are not on the expected version, restore the backup and install the release intended for the server’s Terraria build.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A moderator can do too much
Inspect the account’s group membership and each permission inherited by that group. Remove broad world-modification, spawning, teleport or REST permissions and replace them with the narrow nodes required for the moderator’s actual job.
A convenience plugin changes the economy
Disable the feature on a test copy, then decide whether the underlying command should be restricted, limited to events or removed. Recheck warps, teleports and spawning against the progression rules before re-enabling it.
REST automation has excessive access
Replace a broad raw-command permission with the specific REST nodes needed for configuration, broadcasts, kicks, bans, mutes, kills, events or player information. Rotate the token if it may have been exposed.
A practical baseline for a new server
For most communities, the safest starting configuration is a small owner group, a moderator group with player-focused moderation permissions, and a player group with normal gameplay plus only the convenience commands that fit the server’s rules. Keep world modification, spawning, save operations, server-side character management and REST maintenance with trusted operators.
Run the server for a short closed test before inviting the public. Have one tester use a player account, another use the moderator account and the owner perform the administrative checks. This exposes permission mistakes without risking a populated world. Once the roles behave as intended, document the permissions, add the directory and database to the backup schedule, and treat every future plugin as a change to that controlled system.
The Bottom Line
Use TShock’s built-in anti-cheat, groups and granular permissions as the foundation; add plugins only after verifying exact version compatibility, permission scope, progression impact and backup behavior. The persistent extracted directory, protected credentials and tested recovery copy are more important than having a long plugin list.
