Pick one route, enter a real value from 0 to 100, then check the result on mobile and with a keyboard before publishing.

Choose the right WordPress method
Your editor determines the most maintainable implementation. A builder widget keeps settings with the page-builder interface; a block keeps them in the block editor; a shortcode is compact but depends on the plugin remaining active.
| Route | Best fit | How it is added | Values and labels | Styling and animation | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elementor Progress Bar widget | Pages built in Elementor | Open the page in Elementor and insert the widget | One percentage, title, optional percentage text, and inner text | Bar, background, inner-text colors, typography, and animation controls | Settings are tied to Elementor |
| Gutenberg block plugin | Sites using the WordPress block editor | Install a plugin, then insert “Progress Bar” from the block inserter | Plugin-dependent labels, titles, percentages, and progress items | Layout styles, effects, colors, animation, and typography vary by block | Requires an additional block plugin |
| Progress Bar shortcode plugin | Lightweight, reusable shortcode output | Install and activate the WordPress.org “Progress Bar” plugin, then place a shortcode | Basic syntax sets one percentage; documented options add color and style | Preset colors, stripes, and CSS selectors for custom styling | Content can lose its display if the plugin is removed or replaced |
| WPBakery Progress Bar element | Pages already built with WPBakery | Add the Progress Bar content element in WPBakery | Labels, values, units, and several value entries | Global or per-value colors, stripes, animation, CSS animation, and design options | Most useful inside a WPBakery workflow |
Understand what a progress bar communicates
Determinate progress
A determinate bar represents a known amount of completion. Its value is expressed from 0 to 100, so a bar at 50 means half of the stated task is complete. The label must identify what is being measured: “Course completed — 50%” and “Download — 50%” communicate different things even though the number is identical.

Indeterminate progress
An indeterminate bar is used when the system cannot supply a meaningful percentage. It signals that work is ongoing without claiming a specific completion value. Do not display a made-up percentage simply to create a more polished visual; use an indeterminate treatment when the duration or remaining work is unknown.
WordPress developer documentation describes a horizontal ProgressBar component with determinate and indeterminate modes. A numeric value from 0 to 100 makes it determinate; omitting the value makes it indeterminate. That component documentation is aimed at developers. Editors should use the widget, block, or shortcode routes below.

Elementor’s Progress Bar widget is the shortest route when the page is already being designed in Elementor. Elementor describes the widget as providing fully styled, animated progress bars.
- Open the page in Elementor. In the WordPress dashboard, open the page or post, choose Edit with Elementor, and wait for the visual editor to load.
- Insert the widget. In the widget panel, search for Progress Bar and drag it into the section or container where the indicator belongs.
- Write a descriptive title. Replace a vague title such as “Progress” with the subject and scope, for example, “Module 3 of 6 completed” or “Fundraising target reached.”
- Enter the completion percentage. Set the percentage to the measured value from 0 through 100. Keep the number synchronized with the underlying task; a decorative estimate should not be presented as an exact status.
- Choose whether to show the percentage. Enable the widget’s percentage display when visitors need the numeric value. If the title already includes a clear number, hiding the duplicate can make the component less cluttered.
- Add inner text only when it adds meaning. Inner text can show a short status such as “12 of 20 lessons.” Do not place long sentences inside the bar, where contrast and narrow mobile widths can make them unreadable.
- Set colors and typography. Configure the bar, background, and inner-text colors, then set title typography so the label has a clear hierarchy. Check the contrast between the fill and its track as well as the text and its background.
- Preview responsive breakpoints. Use Elementor’s desktop, tablet, and mobile previews. Long titles may wrap, and inner text that fits on desktop can collide with the fill on a narrow screen.
- Publish or update after checking the live view. Previewing inside Elementor is not a substitute for checking the rendered page with the active theme, caching layer, and logged-out view.
When Elementor is the better choice
Use the widget when editors need to adjust values visually, match the page’s existing color system, or animate the bar as it enters the viewport. It avoids adding a separate block or shortcode syntax to an Elementor page.

Add a progress bar in Gutenberg
The core block inserter does not provide a standard editor block named Progress Bar in the supplied documentation. Gutenberg users therefore install a block plugin that supplies one. Blockenberg and WBD Progress Bar document this workflow; their control names and visual options can differ by plugin version.
Blockenberg workflow
- Install the block plugin. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New, search for Blockenberg, install it, and activate it.
- Open the editor. Edit the page or post with the block editor and place the cursor where the indicator should appear.
- Insert the block. Click the plus inserter, search for Progress Bar, and select the block supplied by the plugin.
- Configure the block sidebar. Set the layout style, title, labels, percentage display, and progress items. Add only as many items as the reader can understand at a glance.
- Review effects and responsive behavior. Configure effects or animation only after confirming that the static value remains understandable. Preview the page at narrow widths before publishing.
WBD Progress Bar workflow
- Install the plugin. Open Plugins → Add New, search for WBD Progress Bar, install it, and activate it.
- Insert the block. In the block editor, click the plus button and search for the plugin’s Progress Bar block.
- Set the percentage and presentation. Use the block controls for percentage, colors, animation, and typography. Add a title that identifies the measured task.
- Save and test the front end. Confirm that the value, text contrast, and animation are correct when viewed outside the editor and while logged out.
Block-plugin decisions
- Prefer a block when portability matters within Gutenberg. Editors can reopen the page and change the value through familiar sidebar controls instead of editing shortcode text.
- Check the plugin’s update and removal behavior. A block supplied by a deactivated plugin may no longer render as intended, so record which plugin provides each bar.
- Use one visual system. If several progress bars appear on a page, keep their track, fill, labels, and number formatting consistent unless the values represent clearly different kinds of work.
Add a progress bar with the shortcode plugin
The WordPress.org plugin named “Progress Bar” provides a compact shortcode. After installing and activating it, place this in a Shortcode block, a classic-editor paragraph, or another field that executes shortcodes:
[wppb progress=50]
That example renders a bar at 50 percent. Replace 50 with the measured value for the task. Keep the shortcode in a context that actually processes shortcodes; a plain-code block will display the characters instead of rendering a bar.
Documented styling options
The plugin documentation describes options including red, orange, green, yellow, flat, candystripe, and animated-candystripe. Use the exact option names documented by the installed plugin version and test each result on the front end. Do not assume that a theme or another plugin will understand those values.

Custom CSS targets
For site-level styling, the plugin documentation names div.wppb-progress as the container and div.wppb-progress > span as the bar inside it. Add CSS through the site’s supported Additional CSS or child-theme workflow, then retest after theme changes. A theme selector with greater specificity can override your rule, and a plugin update can alter markup, so keep custom rules narrow and documented.
Shortcode trade-offs
- Convenience: the same compact syntax can be pasted into multiple posts.
- Dependence: deactivating or removing the plugin can leave raw shortcode text or an empty space.
- Editing experience: writers must remember attribute names rather than selecting a visual control.
- Migration: moving to a different plugin generally requires replacing every shortcode and checking its styling again.
Add a progress bar with WPBakery
WPBakery users should stay inside the page builder and add its Progress Bar content element. This element is designed for one or several labeled values and exposes more fields than a minimal one-value shortcode.
- Open the page in WPBakery. Choose the backend or frontend editor used by the site, then add a new content element.
- Select Progress Bar. Search the element list for Progress Bar and insert it in the desired row or column.
- Set the widget title and units. Give the group a title and choose a unit label, such as a percent sign or another unit that genuinely matches the values.
- Add value labels and values. Enter a clear label for each value and supply the corresponding number. Several entries can be used when comparing related categories, but each must have the same measurement logic.
- Choose colors. Apply a global color when all values share one meaning, or set per-value colors when the distinction is meaningful and explained by labels.
- Configure stripes and animation carefully. Stripes and CSS animation are available options. Use them only if they do not obscure the amount, create distracting motion, or reduce readability.
- Set advanced identifiers if needed. The element supports an element ID, extra class name, and design options. Use an ID only when a page script or anchor genuinely needs it; use a descriptive class for reusable CSS.
- Save and inspect the rendered page. Verify spacing, labels, and motion at each responsive breakpoint.
Design and accessibility checks
Label the measurement
A number without a subject is ambiguous. Pair the bar with a visible title such as “Campaign goal,” “Lessons completed,” or “Battery remaining.” If the bar tracks multiple values, make every row’s label unique.
Keep the value truthful
Use a determinate bar only when the percentage is known. Define what 0 and 100 mean before choosing the number. For a six-step course, for example, completing three whole steps is 50 percent only if each step counts equally. If tasks have different weights, calculate the percentage from those weights rather than from the number of rows.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not rely on color alone
Color can reinforce a status but should not be the only signal. Include a title, number, or text status so someone with color-vision deficiency can understand the result. Check contrast for the filled bar, unfilled track, title, and any text placed over the fill.
Make motion optional or restrained
Animation can draw attention when a bar first appears, but fast stripes or looping movement can distract from the value and create problems for people sensitive to motion. Prefer a short entrance effect, provide a reduced-motion-friendly presentation where the implementation allows it, and never animate an indeterminate bar so aggressively that it resembles an error.

A decorative bar should not insert an unnecessary interactive control into the tab order. If the implementation exposes a semantic progress indicator, confirm that its accessible name identifies the task and that its value is available to assistive technology. Keyboard users should be able to reach surrounding links and controls without getting trapped in the bar.
Test more than the editor preview
- View the page while logged out and with caching enabled.
- Zoom the browser and check that labels remain readable.
- Use a narrow mobile viewport and a long translated label if the site is multilingual.
- Check the bar with animation disabled or reduced where possible.
- Confirm that the fill and text remain visible against both light and dark theme backgrounds.
Choose between one value and several values
A single bar is best for one headline status, such as overall course completion. Several bars are appropriate when the reader must compare related categories, for example design, writing, and testing portions of one project. Do not turn every checklist item into a bar: a long stack of nearly identical indicators is harder to scan than a plain list with completed and remaining counts.

| Reader question | Suitable presentation |
|---|---|
| How far is one task from completion? | One determinate bar with a title and percentage |
| Which categories are ahead or behind? | A small, consistently labeled group of bars |
| When will an operation finish? | An indeterminate bar if no reliable percentage exists |
| What remains in a checklist? | A text count or checklist may be clearer than many bars |
Troubleshoot common failures
The shortcode appears as text
Confirm that the Progress Bar plugin is active and that the content is in a field that processes shortcodes. A Code block intentionally prints shortcode characters. Move the syntax to a Shortcode block or a shortcode-enabled content area, then clear page and browser caches.
The block or widget is missing
Check that the relevant plugin or page builder is installed and activated, and search the inserter using the exact name “Progress Bar.” A role with restricted plugin or editor access may also hide the control. If the page was built with a different editor, use that editor’s native route rather than mixing systems.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The bar is the wrong width or color
Inspect the element’s own style settings first, then look for theme CSS or custom rules overriding them. For shortcode output, target the documented container and child selectors rather than broad selectors that affect every progress-like element on the site.
The number and fill disagree
Look for a duplicate percentage setting, cached markup, or JavaScript that changes the visual fill after load. Edit the source value, purge relevant caches, and compare the logged-out page with the editor preview.
Animation hides the status
Disable stripes or entrance effects and reload the page. If the value becomes clear without motion, keep the static presentation or shorten the effect. The bar must communicate its amount even when animation is blocked.
Removing a plugin breaks old pages
Shortcodes and third-party blocks are plugin-dependent. Before deactivation, search the site for the shortcode or block name, export a list of affected URLs, and convert those pages to the replacement implementation. Test representative pages before completing the removal.

Developer option: the WordPress ProgressBar component
Developers building custom blocks can use WordPress’s documented ProgressBar component rather than relying on editor plugins. It is horizontal, accepts a numeric value from 0 to 100 for determinate progress, and becomes indeterminate when the value is omitted. This route requires a custom block or component-development workflow and is not a point-and-click substitute for Elementor, Gutenberg block plugins, WPBakery, or the shortcode plugin.
Quick Recap
A practical publishing checklist
- The implementation matches the editor used to build the page.
- The title states exactly what the percentage measures.
- The value is between 0 and 100 and reflects current data.
- Indeterminate status is used when a percentage is not known.
- Text and fill colors remain legible against their backgrounds.
- Color is not the only way the status is conveyed.
- Animation does not obscure the value or create unnecessary motion.
- The bar works at desktop, tablet, mobile, zoomed, and logged-out views.
- The plugin, block, widget, or shortcode dependency is recorded for future editors.
