Witch huts are small spruce-wood structures that generate in swamp biomes. They are useful landmarks for finding witches and can become dedicated farms, but the best approach depends on your edition: Java Edition has a direct hut locator, while Bedrock Edition uses the broader temple locator. In a fight, keep your distance, use a bow or direct weapon damage, and never rely on poison or weakness potions.

What a witch hut is
A witch hut is a small spruce-wood house with no door and a front porch. It generates in a swamp biome and is one of the few world features associated directly with witches. The structure itself is simple, but the area around it matters: witches can spawn in the hut’s designated spawning area, so an apparently empty hut can still become dangerous when you approach.

You can treat it as an occasional encounter site, defeat witches for alchemical and crafting materials, and then light or otherwise secure the area. Alternatively, you can build a dedicated witch farm around the hut. A farm requires edition-specific planning, low light, and substantial control of nearby spawning spaces, so it is a larger project than simply finding and clearing one structure.
If you are exploring rather than farming, remove or light the hut area after arriving. Leaving the area dark allows witches to continue spawning there while you are nearby.

How to find a witch hut
Java Edition: use the witch-hut structure locator
- Open the chat window in a world where commands are enabled.
- Enter
/locate structure swamp_hut. - Use the coordinates returned by the command to travel to the nearest structure.
- Check that the destination is in a swamp and identify the spruce house with its open front porch.
The Java command targets the swamp-hut structure directly, making it the clearest option when you want a hut rather than a general swamp landmark. If commands are unavailable, you must search swamps manually; the hut’s small spruce silhouette and porch are the visual clues to use.
Bedrock Edition: use the temple locator
- Open chat with commands enabled.
- Enter
/locate structure temple. - Travel to the returned location and inspect the surrounding biome and structure.
- Confirm whether the result is a witch hut, since the temple locator can return the nearest temple type, including a witch hut.
Bedrock’s command is broader than Java’s hut-specific command. Treat the result as a lead, not as proof that the nearest temple is the exact structure you want. The swamp setting and the hut’s spruce construction provide the final confirmation.

Recognizing the structure when you arrive
- Biome: the hut generates in a swamp.
- Material: the house is made from spruce wood.
- Entrance: there is no door.
- Exterior: a small front porch projects from the house.
Do not assume that finding the building makes the area safe. A dark hut area can still be a spawning site, and a witch may appear after you have already inspected the structure.
How witches behave in combat
Health and attack style
A witch has 26 health, according to the 2026 Minecraft Wiki entry. Witches are ranged enemies: they throw splash potions instead of relying on melee attacks. A splash potion can affect you without a direct hit, so closing the distance in a straight line is riskier than approaching from cover or attacking from range.
Witches can also drink beneficial potions to recover. A fight that appears nearly finished can therefore take longer if you allow the witch time to heal. The combination of 26 health, ranged attacks, and self-healing is why a fast, controlled attack is safer than trading damage at close range.

Why poison and weakness are bad choices
Poison potions and weakness potions do not work on witches. The raid guide explains that witches are immune to poison and do not use melee attacks, which removes the normal reason to apply weakness. Using either potion wastes an opportunity while the witch continues throwing splash potions.
Useful preparation
- Bow or other ranged weapon: lets you damage the witch while reducing exposure to splash potions.
- Direct weapon damage: is the documented alternative when you cannot maintain a safe ranged position.
- Armor and shield: reduce the consequences of an attack that reaches you.
- Food: gives you a way to recover between exchanges.
- Retreat route: prevents a swamp, porch, or uneven ground from trapping you in potion range.
These are risk-reduction measures rather than a guaranteed loadout. The cited combat guidance does not define one universally safe armor set, weapon, or shield arrangement.
Step-by-step: fighting a witch safely
- Spot the witch before entering the hut. Pause at the edge of the structure or nearby cover. A witch can begin throwing potions as soon as it has a clear line of attack.
- Create space. Move away from the porch and avoid a straight approach through the doorway area. Space gives you time to react when a potion is thrown.
- Start with a bow or another ranged weapon. Attack from outside splash range where possible. Use terrain or the hut itself as cover between shots.
- Watch the witch’s recovery behavior. If it drinks a beneficial potion, continue moving and maintain your safe angle rather than rushing into a potion cloud.
- Change position after a throw. Do not stand still waiting for the next shot. Moving sideways or retreating helps prevent multiple splash potions from overlapping on the same location.
- Switch to direct weapon damage only when the approach is clear. If the witch is cornered or you have run out of ammunition, close in briefly, strike, and retreat rather than remaining in front of it.
- Finish the fight and secure the area. Once the witch is dead, light or otherwise control the hut area if you do not intend to farm it.
Harming potions are documented as an offensive alternative in the raid guide, but poison and weakness are not. Whichever method you use, the key decisions are distance, an unobstructed retreat, and avoiding repeated splash-potion exposure.
What witches drop
The normal drop pool listed by the witch-farming tutorial contains seven item types. The tutorial also notes two important changes to the usual expectations: redstone is guaranteed in version 1.21 and later, and sticks are dropped twice as often as the other normal items.
| Drop | Documented detail |
|---|---|
| Redstone | Guaranteed in Minecraft 1.21 and later, according to the cited tutorial. |
| Glowstone dust | Part of the normal witch drop pool. |
| Sugar | Part of the normal witch drop pool. |
| Gunpowder | Part of the normal witch drop pool. |
| Glass bottles | Part of the normal witch drop pool. |
| Spider eyes | Part of the normal witch drop pool. |
| Sticks | Dropped twice as often as the other normal items, according to the cited tutorial. |
The redstone statement is version-qualified: it applies to 1.21 and above, not automatically to older versions. The stick comparison is a relative frequency statement, not a promise that every witch drops sticks or that a fixed number will appear.

The potion a witch is drinking
A witch may also drop the potion it is currently using when killed under the relevant condition. The cited example is usually Instant Health. This is separate from the normal seven-item pool and should be treated as a conditional extra, not as a guaranteed potion drop.
How Looting changes the result
Looting improves drop chances and overall output. The available guidance does not provide a single percentage or a fixed item count, so plan around improved yields rather than a guaranteed number of each resource.
Can you make a witch farm from a swamp hut?
Yes. A swamp hut can serve as the basis of a witch farm, but the farm must be designed for the edition you are playing. Java and Bedrock farm designs differ, so a platform layout that works in one edition should not be presented as universal.
Core spawning requirements
- Light level: witches can spawn in the hut’s designated area at light level 7 or lower.
- Biome coverage: the whole hut must be inside a swamp for witches to be the only mobs able to spawn in that small area.
- Platform limit: one hut supports a maximum of three spawning platforms.
- Edition: choose a Java or Bedrock design that matches the world in which you will build.
The light requirement applies to the spawning area, not merely to the hut’s roof or porch. Adding lights to a platform can stop the farm from working. Conversely, allowing other dark spawning spaces nearby can reduce the number of witches appearing where you want them.

Why the biome boundary matters
A hut that is entirely inside a swamp gives the farm its witch-exclusive spawning behavior in that small area. If part of the hut falls outside the swamp, the assumption that only witches can use the area no longer holds. Verify the biome around the complete hut before committing to a large build.

What the three-platform limit means
The documented maximum is three spawning platforms per hut. Adding more platforms does not create additional valid hut spawning layers. Farm plans should therefore spend effort on controlling the existing platforms and nearby spawnable spaces rather than stacking unlimited floors.

1. Confirm the edition and structure
Record whether the world is Java or Bedrock, locate the hut with the appropriate command or manual search, and verify that the structure is the one your chosen design expects. Do not begin by copying a platform layout without checking its edition label.
Recommended Free Tools
2. Check the entire biome footprint
Inspect the hut and the surrounding ground to make sure the complete structure is inside a swamp. This is the condition that enables witch-exclusive spawning in the hut’s small area.
3. Preserve the required darkness
Keep the designated spawning area at light level 7 or lower. Lights used for personal safety should be placed where they do not raise the spawning platforms above that threshold. If you are not building a farm, do the opposite: light or remove the dark area so witches stop appearing there.
4. Control competing spawn spaces
A farm’s output depends on where the game’s available spawning attempts can succeed. The hut itself has only up to three valid platforms, so nearby dark spaces can compete with it. The exact spawn-proofing method depends on the edition and design; the essential check is that the intended platforms remain the most reliable dark locations.

5. Add collection and transport only after spawning works
Test whether witches are appearing on the platforms before investing in a complicated collection system. This separates a spawning problem from a transport or storage problem. Once spawning is confirmed, add the collection method specified by your edition-specific design.
6. Test at the farm’s intended operating distance
Run the farm in the position and conditions for which the design was built. If witches are not appearing, recheck light level, complete swamp coverage, platform count, and competing dark areas before rebuilding redstone or collection components.
Encounter or farm? Choose by your goal
| Option | Best for | Main requirements | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple hut encounter | Occasional redstone, glowstone dust, sugar, gunpowder, bottles, spider eyes, or sticks | Locate the hut, fight safely, and secure the area afterward | Low construction effort, but irregular output |
| Dedicated witch farm | Continuous production and larger quantities of witch drops | Correct edition design, light level 7 or lower, complete swamp coverage, spawn-proofing, and up to three valid platforms | Higher building and troubleshooting effort |
Choose the encounter route when you only need a modest amount of material or have found a hut during exploration. Choose a farm when repeated production justifies the work of checking biome boundaries, managing spawn spaces, and following an edition-specific design.
Troubleshooting common problems
“The locator took me to the wrong kind of structure.”
This is most likely on Bedrock, where /locate structure temple can return the nearest temple type, including a witch hut. Inspect the destination instead of assuming every temple result is a hut. On Java, use the hut-specific /locate structure swamp_hut command.
“Witches keep appearing after I cleared the hut.”
Clearing the existing witch does not change the spawning conditions. If the area remains dark and you are not farming, light or remove the hut’s designated area.
“My farm produces nothing.”
- Check that the spawning platforms are at light level 7 or lower.
- Verify that the whole hut is inside a swamp.
- Confirm that the design uses no more than the hut’s maximum three platforms.
- Make sure the instructions match Java or Bedrock as appropriate.
- Look for nearby dark spaces that may be competing with the platforms.
“Poison or weakness did nothing.”
That result is expected. Witches are immune to poison, and weakness is ineffective because they do not use melee attacks. Use a bow, direct weapon damage, or a documented offensive alternative such as a harming potion.
“The witch healed while I was attacking.”
Witches can drink beneficial potions. Keep moving, preserve distance, and continue controlled attacks rather than rushing into splash-potion range.
