To add a Prometheus dashboard to Grafana, first make Prometheus a working Grafana data source, then import a dashboard JSON file, Grafana.com URL or ID, or pasted JSON and map its Prometheus reference to that data source. If no existing dashboard fits, create panels with PromQL queries and save a new dashboard. An empty panel almost always means Grafana cannot reach Prometheus, the import points to the wrong data source, the query expects metrics you do not collect, or the selected time range contains no samples.

What must be ready before you add a dashboard
A dashboard is only a collection of queries and visual settings. It does not install Prometheus, create metrics, or make an unreachable server available. Prepare these components first:

- A running Prometheus server. Grafana must be able to reach its HTTP endpoint from the machine, container, or hosted connector that runs Grafana.
- The metrics the dashboard expects. The official Grafana getting-started path uses Prometheus with Node Exporter for host metrics. A dashboard built for Node Exporter cannot display host CPU, memory, or filesystem charts if those series are not being scraped.
- A Grafana account with permission to configure data sources. UI configuration requires organization-administrator permissions. If you do not have that role, an administrator can provision the source with YAML or Terraform.
- A dashboard definition or a plan for your own panels. Imports can use a JSON file, a Grafana.com dashboard URL or numeric ID, or JSON text copied into Grafana.
Before touching Grafana, verify that Prometheus itself is healthy and collecting data. The Prometheus web interface should load, and its expression browser should return the series your intended dashboard queries. Checking this first separates a metrics problem from a Grafana configuration problem.
Verify Prometheus and the required metrics
Check the endpoint from the Grafana network
For a local, same-host installation, a typical Prometheus URL is http://localhost:9090. Open that address from the Prometheus host or use an HTTP check such as curl http://localhost:9090/-/ready where the readiness endpoint is enabled. The important test is not merely that Prometheus runs on your laptop; it must be reachable from the Grafana process.

In a container deployment, run the check from the Grafana container or its network namespace. localhost inside the Grafana container refers to that container, not to the host and not to a separate Prometheus container. Use the Prometheus service name on the shared network, a resolvable container hostname, or another address that the Grafana server can route to.
Confirm the series a dashboard will query
Use Prometheus’s expression browser or Grafana Explore to run a simple availability query such as up. A value of 1 for the expected target indicates that Prometheus is scraping it; no result means the target, labels, or scrape configuration needs attention. For a Node Exporter dashboard, also check that Node Exporter series such as node_cpu_seconds_total or node_memory_MemAvailable_bytes exist in your Prometheus version and scrape job.
Do not assume that a dashboard’s metric names are universal. Exporters, recording rules, prefixes, and label conventions differ. A community dashboard may require a particular exporter release or a recording-rule file that is not present in your installation.
Add Prometheus as a Grafana data source
Grafana includes built-in support for Prometheus; no separate Grafana plugin installation is required. Navigation labels vary by Grafana version, but the current route is Connections → Add new connection. In other versions, open Data sources and choose Add data source.
- Sign in to the correct Grafana organization.
- Open Connections and select Add new connection (or open Data sources).
- Search for and select Prometheus.
- Enter a descriptive name, such as
Prometheus-production, so import mappings are unambiguous. - In the server URL field, enter the address reachable from Grafana. Use
http://localhost:9090only when Prometheus runs on the same network namespace as Grafana. For containers, use the Prometheus service hostname and port instead. - Leave authentication, TLS, and access settings aligned with your Prometheus deployment. If Prometheus is behind HTTPS, a proxy, or authentication, configure the corresponding Grafana options rather than substituting an internal URL that Grafana cannot resolve.
- Click Save & test (the button may be labeled Save and test).
A successful test confirms that Grafana can contact the endpoint, but it does not prove that every dashboard metric exists. If the test fails, fix DNS, routing, firewall, TLS, authentication, or the URL before importing a dashboard.

When UI access is unavailable
Organization administrators can configure the source in the UI. If your account lacks that permission, ask an administrator to create it, or provision the data source through Grafana’s YAML provisioning files or Terraform. Provisioning is useful when several Grafana instances must receive the same source definition and credentials without manual clicks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose an import method
Open Dashboards → New → Import dashboard. Grafana supports several equivalent ways to supply the dashboard definition.
| Method | What you provide | When it is useful | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upload JSON | A dashboard JSON file on your computer | Version-controlled dashboards, exported backups, or files supplied by a teammate | Review the target Grafana version, required plugins, variables, and data-source references |
| Grafana.com URL or ID | The dashboard’s published URL or numeric ID | Quickly importing a dashboard from the Grafana dashboard library | Read its documentation and confirm exporter, metric names, variables, and version compatibility |
| Paste JSON | Dashboard JSON copied into the import field | Small edits, code-review workflows, or a JSON document stored elsewhere | Ensure the entire JSON document is valid and includes its panel and variable definitions |
Grafana’s dashboard library includes official and community dashboards for common technologies. Treat a community dashboard as configuration, not as a guaranteed turnkey product. Inspect its queries, template variables, required exporters, expected labels, and panel transformations before using it in production.
Import a Prometheus dashboard step by step
1. Open the importer
In Grafana, choose Dashboards in the side navigation, select New, and click Import dashboard. Provide a JSON file, a Grafana.com URL or ID, or paste the JSON into the importer.
2. Review the dashboard definition
Grafana displays the dashboard name and may expose options for a folder, UID, and metric-prefix substitutions. Choose a folder that matches your operating model, such as a team or environment folder. Keep an existing UID when you are deliberately replacing a dashboard; choose a new identity when you are creating a separate copy. If the dashboard documents a metric prefix, apply it only when your Prometheus series use that prefix.

3. Map the data source
Imported JSON often refers to a data source by name, UID, or an older placeholder. Grafana presents a mapping screen when those references do not exactly match the destination instance. Map every Prometheus reference to the Prometheus source you configured, for example Prometheus-production, then inspect the mapping rather than accepting an accidental default.
Mapping is required because a dashboard file can move between organizations whose data-source names and UIDs differ. Grafana’s import workflow is designed to map references to data sources that exist in your environment so panels can query the correct backend.
4. Import and inspect the result
Click Import. Open the resulting dashboard, set a time range that includes recent samples, and wait for the panels to query. Check the dashboard’s template-variable controls first; selecting a host, job, namespace, or instance that has no matching labels can make every panel appear empty even when Prometheus is healthy.
Build a dashboard manually when no import fits
Creating a dashboard from scratch is often safer than adapting a dashboard that assumes exporters or labels you do not run. Use Dashboards → New → New Dashboard, then add a panel.
- Click Add visualization or Add panel, depending on your Grafana version.
- Select the Prometheus data source from the query editor.
- Enter a PromQL expression or construct one with the query builder. The data source determines the query language, so effective Prometheus panels require basic PromQL knowledge.
- Run or refresh the query and verify that it returns samples for the selected time range.
- Choose a visualization. Grafana commonly starts a Prometheus panel as a time-series graph, but you can select other visualization types from the visualization list.
- Configure units, legends, thresholds, field overrides, and transformations only after the query returns the intended data.
- Click Apply to return to the dashboard, add more panels as needed, then click Save dashboard.
Each panel needs a query to display a visualization. A useful first panel is a target-health query such as up; subsequent panels can aggregate the exact application or exporter metrics you confirmed in Prometheus. Keep the query visible in the panel editor so another operator can understand the metric and labels without reverse-engineering a transformation.

Use variables for reusable dashboards
Variables let viewers choose values such as a job, instance, cluster, or namespace instead of editing every panel. Create a query variable against the Prometheus source, verify that its returned label values exist, and reference the variable consistently in panel queries. A variable with no values is a configuration error, not a visualization problem.
Add deployment and alert context with annotations
Annotations place event markers over time-series panels, which helps correlate a deployment, alert, or threshold event with a change in application behavior. To configure one, edit the dashboard and add an Annotation query.
- Open the dashboard’s settings or edit view and choose Annotations.
- Add an annotation query and select the Prometheus data source.
- Enter a PromQL expression that returns the event series used by your monitoring setup.
- Set the minimum step and map the fields Grafana should use for event time, title, tags, and text.
- Run the query or test it in the editor, then save the dashboard.
Prometheus annotations require a configured and reachable data source, event metrics that actually exist, and read access to Prometheus. If the event series is absent, the annotation layer remains empty while ordinary metric panels may continue to work.

Grafana Cloud or self-managed Grafana?
Both deployment models can import dashboard JSON, URLs, and IDs. The choice is primarily operational: who runs Grafana and how it reaches Prometheus.
| Consideration | Self-managed Grafana | Grafana Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Operations | Your team installs, upgrades, secures, backs up, and monitors Grafana. | The hosted service reduces platform maintenance; you still manage dashboards, users, queries, and Prometheus access. |
| Network path | Grafana can usually reach a private Prometheus directly on the same network, subject to routing and firewall rules. | Prometheus must be reachable through an appropriate hosted connection, or you must configure Private Data Source Connect for a private endpoint. |
| Dashboard portability | JSON, URLs, and IDs are supported, but data-source mappings and plugin or version compatibility still apply. | The same import formats work, with the same need to map the Prometheus source and verify compatibility. |
| Control and governance | Local infrastructure gives you direct control over storage, network boundaries, upgrades, and deployment policy. | Hosting shifts infrastructure maintenance to the provider while your organization governs access, folders, dashboard changes, and data-source permissions. |
For a private Prometheus server, self-managed Grafana is often the simpler network design. Grafana Cloud can work when you expose Prometheus safely through a supported endpoint or establish Private Data Source Connect; do not point a hosted service at an address that exists only inside your home or corporate LAN.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Troubleshoot an empty or broken dashboard
Work from the backend outward. The symptom “no data” does not identify the cause, so use the branch that matches the error.
Connection refused, timeout, or data-source error
- Confirm the Prometheus process is running and its endpoint responds.
- Test the URL from the Grafana server or container, not only from your workstation.
- Replace an inappropriate
localhost:9090with the Prometheus service hostname when Grafana and Prometheus are separate containers. - Check DNS, firewall rules, proxy settings, TLS certificates, and authentication requirements.
- Save and test the data source again before changing panel queries.
Import succeeds but every panel is empty
- Open the dashboard’s data-source settings or re-run the import and map every Prometheus reference to the configured source.
- Check that the dashboard’s time range includes the period when Prometheus was scraping.
- Inspect template variables and select values that actually exist in Prometheus.
- Open a panel, copy its PromQL query, and run that query in Grafana Explore or Prometheus’s expression browser.
Only some panels are empty
- Compare the panel’s metric names and labels with the series returned by Prometheus.
- Determine whether the dashboard expects a different exporter, recording rule, metric prefix, or label convention.
- Check whether an aggregation or label filter removes all series for your environment.
- Verify that the panel’s unit, transformation, and field override are not hiding a valid zero or null result.
Permission or provisioning failure
If you cannot add or edit the data source, use an organization-administrator account or ask an administrator to provision it through YAML or Terraform. A dashboard import can succeed while queries fail if the destination organization does not contain the referenced data source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDashboard loads with missing plugins or visual differences
A JSON export may reference visualization plugins or features unavailable in the destination Grafana version. Read the import warnings, identify the affected panels, and replace them with built-in visualizations or install the required plugin only after checking your organization’s security and upgrade policy. Data-source mapping cannot repair a missing visualization type.
Production-ready checklist
- Prometheus is running and the required exporter targets are healthy.
- The Prometheus URL is reachable from Grafana’s actual network location.
- The Grafana Prometheus data source passes Save & test.
- The imported dashboard’s queries, variables, and required metrics match your environment.
- Every imported Prometheus reference is mapped to the intended data source.
- The default time range shows current samples, and panels have understandable units and legends.
- Dashboard changes are saved in the correct folder with an intentional name and UID.
- Users who need to administer data sources have organization-administrator permission, or the source is managed through YAML or Terraform.
- Annotations are enabled only when the event metrics and Prometheus read access are available.
The reliable sequence is therefore: prove that Prometheus has the metrics, configure a reachable Grafana data source, import or build panels, map the source explicitly, and troubleshoot queries only after connectivity is confirmed.
