Minecraft Server vs Realm: Cost Breakdown for 2026

By VGSources Team 9 min read

For a small private group, Bedrock Realms is the lowest-cost predictable option; larger Bedrock groups and Java players pay more for the official service. A third-party server can cost less at its smallest RAM tiers or considerably more, but it adds configuration and maintenance in exchange for mods, plugins, file access and custom resources. The right choice depends on edition, simultaneous players and how much control you need.

Realms and servers solve different problems

A Minecraft Realm is Mojang’s managed, always-online personal server. You choose a world, invite players and let Microsoft handle the host machine, routine availability and backups. The official Realms page describes the service this way: “Your Realm is always online, so your friends can play anytime.” Realms also provide three world slots, allowing you to keep multiple worlds available without running separate servers.

A third-party Minecraft server is rented infrastructure. The provider supplies a machine, storage and a control panel; you choose the server software, Java or Bedrock configuration, memory allocation and add-ons. That flexibility is what enables plugins, mods, custom JAR files, modpacks and direct file management, but it also makes you responsible for more settings and troubleshooting.

Self-hosting at home is a third category. It may avoid a hosting subscription, but there is no authoritative 2026 all-in cost: electricity, hardware, internet service, port configuration, maintenance and uptime differ by location and setup. Treat self-hosting as a technical project rather than a universal cheaper price.

Official Realms prices for 2026

The following are the US monthly rates displayed on Minecraft’s 2026 pages. Annual figures are simple multiplication of the displayed monthly price and exclude tax or future price changes.

Official option Monthly price Nominal annual price Simultaneous players What is included
Bedrock Realms $3.99 $47.88 Owner plus 2 Always online, backups, three world slots and free play for invited friends; Bedrock edition only.
Bedrock Realms Plus $7.99 $95.88 Owner plus 10 Standard Realms features plus access to the Marketplace Pass catalog; Bedrock edition only.
Java Realms $7.99 $95.88 Owner plus 10 Always online, backups and three world slots for Java players on Windows, macOS and Linux.

These are subscriptions for the owner. Invited friends do not need to buy their own Realm subscription to join. The player limits are simultaneous players, not a promise that only that many people can ever be invited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the edition limits mean

  • Bedrock Realms: Cross-play works among supported Bedrock devices, subject to each platform’s Minecraft and account requirements. A Java player cannot join a Bedrock Realm.
  • Java Realms: Cross-play is among Java players using Windows, macOS and Linux. Bedrock clients cannot join a Java Realm.
  • Realms Plus: The higher price increases the Bedrock simultaneous-player allowance and adds the Marketplace Pass catalog; it does not turn a Bedrock Realm into a Java server.

Third-party hosting prices in 2026

Third-party prices are examples from provider pricing pages, not a market-wide average. The final amount can change with region, taxes, billing term, hardware tier, introductory discounts and renewal rules.

Example plan Displayed price Nominal annual amount Provider-stated positioning Important trade-off
Shockbyte 1GB $3.99/month list price $47.88 before tax or changes Java and Bedrock support, setup, DDoS protection and support. Memory is limited; larger tiers cost more and practical player capacity depends on software, view distance and world activity.
Shockbyte 12GB $47.99/month list price $575.88 before tax or changes Higher-memory tier in the same hosting range. Much more expensive than Realms, but suitable for workloads that need substantially more allocated RAM.
Apex 4GB $14.99 recurring $179.88 Managed Java hosting; the page advertises unlimited slots in its context. Higher recurring cost in exchange for managed hosting and access to larger or premium hardware tiers.
Apex 6GB $22.49 recurring $269.88 Managed Java hosting. Additional memory raises the recurring bill; actual performance still depends on the server software and workload.
Apex 8GB $27.99 recurring $335.88 Managed Java hosting. More headroom for demanding worlds or modpacks, with a higher annual commitment.
PebbleHost budget From $1 per GB Not stated; depends on the RAM allocation File access, custom JAR and modpack support, scheduled tasks and unlimited slots advertised. “From” is a starting rate, not a complete server quote; performance depends on allocated resources and workload.

A $3.99 1GB hosting plan has the same displayed monthly price as Bedrock Realms, but the products are not equivalent. Realms includes a managed world, backups and a fixed player allowance. A 1GB server gives you a configurable environment, while RAM, software choice and administration determine whether it performs well. Conversely, a managed 4GB Java plan can cost several times the price of Java Realms while offering capabilities Realms does not.

Which option is cheaper for your group?

Up to three Bedrock players

Bedrock Realms at $3.99 per month is the lowest predictable official cost when the owner and two simultaneous friends are enough. Invited friends play without paying a second subscription, and the owner does not need to maintain a server process, install updates or configure port forwarding.

Four to eleven Bedrock players

Bedrock Realms Plus costs $7.99 per month and raises the allowance to the owner plus ten. Its Marketplace Pass catalog may add value if your group wants curated Bedrock content, but it is still limited to Bedrock clients and the Realms feature set. A third-party host may offer a different price, yet you must compare the required RAM and the time spent managing it rather than comparing the headline monthly number alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Java players who want turnkey administration

Java Realms is $7.99 per month for the owner plus ten simultaneous Java players on Windows, macOS and Linux. It is the straightforward choice for a vanilla or lightly configured private world where backups, invitations and availability matter more than server-side customization.

Modded, plugin-heavy or custom servers

Realms is not designed for installing arbitrary plugins, mod loaders, custom JAR files or full modpacks. A third-party server is usually the economical choice once those features are requirements, even when its monthly price exceeds $7.99. The relevant comparison is the cost of the smallest plan that provides enough RAM and storage for your software, not the cheapest advertised tier.

What you receive for the monthly fee

Realms: fewer settings, less maintenance

  • Always-online availability without leaving a personal computer running.
  • Backups managed as part of the Realms service.
  • Three world slots for rotating or preserving worlds.
  • Invitation-based access, with friends joining without their own subscription.
  • Edition-specific cross-play rather than a universal Java-and-Bedrock world.

The trade-off is a controlled environment. You cannot treat a Realm like a general-purpose server with arbitrary server files, plugin folders or custom JAR selection.

Third-party hosting: control in exchange for work

  • Choice of server software and, on supported plans, Java or Bedrock deployments.
  • File access for worlds, configurations, backups and logs.
  • Custom JAR files, plugin stacks, mod loaders and modpacks.
  • RAM tiers that can be increased as a world or player base grows.
  • Scheduled tasks and other control-panel automation on some budget plans.

You must select compatible software, upload or install content, configure permissions, monitor logs and verify that backups actually restore. “Unlimited slots” on a provider page is a configuration allowance, not a performance guarantee; the practical limit is set by CPU, RAM, storage speed, simulation distance and the complexity of the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Renewal, taxes and the price you should budget

Multiply a monthly list price by 12 only to estimate a nominal year. At the displayed official rates, Bedrock Realms totals $47.88, while Realms Plus and Java Realms total $95.88 before tax or any price change. The third-party examples above use their displayed recurring or list rates and likewise exclude taxes unless a provider states otherwise.

Promotional hosting prices are not the same as renewal prices. Microsoft’s current “Usage rules for Digital Goods” policy says recurring subscriptions continue at the regular price after a promotional period, subject to change and applicable taxes, unless cancelled. Apply the same caution to any hosting promotion: record the recurring amount, billing interval and renewal date before checking out.

Edition and cross-play checklist

  • If everyone uses Bedrock-supported devices, compare Bedrock Realms and Bedrock-capable hosts.
  • If everyone uses Java on Windows, macOS or Linux, Java Realms is the official turnkey option.
  • If the group mixes Java and Bedrock, a normal Java Realm or Bedrock Realm will not provide that cross-play by itself. You need a server setup that explicitly supports the required bridge and should verify compatibility, updates and support before paying.
  • Console, mobile and Windows players can be on different Bedrock devices, but platform account rules and the purchased edition still apply.

How to start with a Realm

  1. Confirm the edition: select a Bedrock plan for Bedrock clients or Java Realms for Java clients.
  2. Subscribe through the official Minecraft account flow and review the recurring price before confirming.
  3. Create a new world or load an existing compatible world into one of the available slots.
  4. Open the Realm’s player-management screen and invite each friend’s account.
  5. Set permissions deliberately. Give operator-level access only to people you trust.
  6. Use the backup and world-slot controls before making major changes, such as experiments with commands or a new seed.
  7. Test that every invited player can connect on the correct edition before scheduling a group session.

The owner pays; an invited friend does not need a separate Realms subscription. If a friend cannot connect, first check edition mismatch, account invitation status, platform sign-in and the Realm’s simultaneous-player limit.

How to start with third-party hosting

  1. Choose Java or Bedrock software based on the clients that must connect.
  2. Estimate the workload: vanilla survival needs less memory than a large modpack, high simulation distance or many active farms.
  3. Select a plan by allocated RAM and CPU characteristics, not slot count alone. Treat “unlimited slots” as a policy statement, not a promise of unlimited performance.
  4. Install the exact server version and loader required by your clients, plugins or mods.
  5. Upload a world only after confirming its version and keeping an untouched local backup.
  6. Set the server address, whitelist and permissions. Keep administration credentials private.
  7. Configure automated backups and scheduled restarts, then perform a test restore on a copy of the world.
  8. Read the console log after the first start. Resolve incompatible plugins, missing libraries, Java-version errors and memory warnings before inviting the whole group.
  9. Record the renewal price and cancellation process so a low introductory offer does not become an unexpected recurring charge.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The cheapest plan is laggy”

Price per gigabyte does not measure the whole machine. Reduce simulation and view distance, remove unused plugins, profile heavy farms and check CPU or disk limits. If the workload still exceeds the plan, move to a higher RAM or hardware tier rather than adding players to an overloaded server.

“Friends cannot join”

For Realms, verify the invitation account, edition and simultaneous-player limit. For hosted servers, verify the address, port, whitelist, firewall rules and whether the server is running the same version and mod set as the client.

“The renewal charge is higher than expected”

Compare the receipt with the promotional and recurring prices recorded at signup, then include tax and currency conversion. Cancel before the next billing date if the regular price no longer fits your budget, and export the world first.

Decision guide

Your priority Best starting point Reason
Lowest predictable cost for a private Bedrock group of three Bedrock Realms $3.99 monthly, managed availability and backups with no separate friend subscriptions.
Up to eleven Bedrock players and simple administration Realms Plus $7.99 monthly, owner plus ten simultaneous players and Marketplace Pass access.
Up to eleven Java players with minimal administration Java Realms $7.99 monthly, backups and three world slots for supported Java clients.
Plugins, mods, custom JARs or direct files Third-party hosting Those controls are the purpose of a rented server, even when the monthly bill is higher.
Growing workload that needs adjustable memory Third-party hosting RAM tiers can scale beyond the fixed Realms feature set, with additional management responsibility.
Experimenting with networking and hardware Self-hosting Maximum control, but costs and uptime are setup-specific and cannot be reduced to one reliable 2026 price.

Bottom-line cost comparison

For a small, private group, Bedrock Realms is the value baseline: its $3.99 monthly charge covers an always-online world, backups and invitations for the owner plus two simultaneous players. Realms Plus and Java Realms double that monthly price to $7.99 when you need up to ten friends at once. Third-party hosting starts near the same headline price at some providers, but the comparable cost is the plan with enough RAM, CPU and storage for your chosen software. Pay that premium when mods, plugins, custom files or scalable resources matter; otherwise, the managed Realms service avoids administration work that a cheap server plan leaves to you.
