Put the public key in that account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, then use Servers > New server > IP address or domain in the dashboard. After saving the details, choose Validate connection on the server’s General page. A successful validation reports the host as reachable and validated, installs or verifies Docker components, and makes the machine available as a deployment destination.

The important distinction is that validation is not only a login test. Coolify checks the operating system and tools, records hardware and kernel information, starts its proxy, and may install Docker or restart the Docker service. Prepare for that change before validating a machine that already runs production workloads.

Coolify connects to a remote Linux server over SSH. Every connection detail entered in the dashboard must correspond to the server configuration, or validation will fail. Have these items ready:
- A Linux server with a reachable public or private IP address or a resolvable hostname.
- Console access or an existing password-based login so you can install the public key.
- An SSH port that is open through the server firewall and any upstream network firewall. Port 22 is the usual default, but Coolify can use another port.
- Access to the Coolify dashboard.
- An SSH user. The manual procedure uses
root. A non-root account requires Coolify’s separate non-root setup rather than simply changing the username field. - A private key generated or stored in Coolify without a passphrase. Coolify cannot stop for an interactive passphrase prompt during server operations.
Use a fresh server when possible. Validation can install Docker Engine and Docker Compose and restart Docker; containers already running on the machine can therefore be unavailable temporarily. If the host is carrying important services, schedule validation for a maintenance window and verify that a restart is acceptable.

Prepare the server and SSH path
Confirm the address and port
Record the exact IP address or hostname that the Coolify instance will reach. In Coolify’s server form, enter only the address, not a URL: do not prepend http:// or https://. Record the SSH port as a number. If SSH listens on a nonstandard port, that same number must be used both when you test access and when you create the Coolify server entry.
From a workstation that can reach the host, test the route with the account you intend to authorize:

ssh root@<server-ip>For a nonstandard port, add the port explicitly:
ssh -p <ssh-port> root@<server-ip>These tests verify that the address, route, port, and account are usable before you involve Coolify. If the test cannot reach the host, fix routing or firewall rules first; changing the key in Coolify will not correct a blocked TCP connection.
Allow the SSH source
Open the selected SSH port in the server firewall and in any cloud or network firewall in front of it. The rule must allow the source address used by your Coolify installation. A timeout usually means that the SSH port is closed or that the relevant source address is not allowed. Keep the rule as narrow as your network design permits, but do not remove access needed for initial setup.
Choose the account deliberately
The public key must be installed for exactly the user entered in Coolify. A key placed in /root/.ssh/authorized_keys will not authenticate a connection configured for another account. If you plan to use a non-root account, complete the documented non-root preparation for that account first; the root-oriented steps below are not a substitute.

Create the private key in Coolify
Coolify stores the private key and uses it for SSH operations. Generate the key in the dashboard so the matching public key is immediately available for installation.
- Open Keys & Tokens > Private Keys.
- Select New private key.
- Choose Generate ED25519.
- Save the key.
- Copy the complete public key exactly as displayed, including its type prefix and the trailing comment if one is present.
Do not add a passphrase to this key. Coolify runs unattended deployment and maintenance actions; it cannot answer an interactive prompt asking for the key’s passphrase. Treat the private key as a secret and do not paste it into the server’s authorized_keys file. Only the public half belongs there.
Authorize the public key on the Linux server
Connect using the console, an existing SSH key, or the temporary password access supplied by your server provider. The following sequence prepares the root account’s SSH directory and appends the new public key without deleting existing keys.
- Connect to the intended account. For the manual root procedure, use
ssh root@<server-ip>, adding-p <ssh-port>when necessary. - Create the SSH directory:
mkdir -p ~/.ssh - Restrict the directory to the account owner:
chmod 700 ~/.ssh - Append the complete public key copied from Coolify to
~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Preserve the key as one uninterrupted line. You can edit the file with the server’s available text editor or append it with a command such asprintf; do not overwrite existing entries accidentally. - Restrict the authorized-keys file:
chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys - Open a second terminal and test the new key before ending the current session. Confirm that the test uses the same username, address, and port you will enter in Coolify.
Do not remove the key that currently keeps your session open until the replacement key has been tested successfully. A permissions mistake or a pasted key with a line break can lock you out if the only working credential is deleted first. If you are configuring a non-root account, perform the equivalent installation in that account’s home directory and follow the additional non-root requirements documented by Coolify.
Add the server in the Coolify dashboard
Once direct SSH access works, create the server record:

- Open Servers and select New server.
- Choose IP address or domain.
- Enter a recognizable server name. Use a name that identifies its environment or purpose, such as a staging build host or production application host.
- Optionally add a description for ownership, location, or maintenance notes.
- Enter the reachable IP address or hostname without
http://orhttps://. - Enter the SSH port. Use
22only when that is actually the listening port; otherwise enter the configured custom port. - Enter the SSH user, matching the account where you installed the public key.
- Select the private key created under Keys & Tokens > Private Keys. It must be the private half corresponding to the public key in that account’s
authorized_keys. - Choose the server role: Deployments and builds, Deployments only, or Builds only.
- Select Continue to create the server entry.
Recheck every value before continuing. An incorrect hostname, port, user, or key can look like a general connection failure even when the server itself is healthy.
Choose the right server role
The role controls which work Coolify may place on the machine. Pick it according to where you want images built and where you want applications to run.

A small installation may start with Deployments and builds for simplicity. Separating the roles becomes useful when builds are resource-intensive or when you need application hosts insulated from build spikes. The role does not change the SSH requirements: each server still needs a reachable address, an allowed port, the correct user, and a matching key.
Validate the connection
Start validation
Open the new server’s General page and select Validate connection. Leave the page open while the checks run. Validation of a new server can take several minutes, especially when Docker components need to be installed or verified.

Coolify’s validation sequence performs system work in addition to authenticating over SSH:

- Tests the SSH connection using the address, port, user, and private key saved in the server record.
- Checks the operating system and required tools.
- Installs or verifies Docker Engine and Docker Compose.
- Records server information for use by the dashboard.
- Starts the Coolify proxy.
Because Docker may be installed or restarted, existing containers can be temporarily unavailable. A validation that appears to pause during Docker setup is not necessarily stuck. On a host with active workloads, watch the maintenance window and confirm service recovery after the process completes.
Read the success state
Validation is complete when the General page says the server is reachable and validated. That status is the operational confirmation that Coolify can use the machine as a deployment destination. The page also displays information discovered during validation, including the operating system, CPU architecture and core count, memory, kernel version, and Docker versions. Check those values against the server you intended to add; an unexpected value can reveal that the hostname resolved to a different machine.

Start with the symptom shown by Coolify, then verify the corresponding layer in order. Test direct SSH from a network that follows the same route whenever possible.
Authentication errors
Authentication failures mean the SSH service was reached but the credentials did not match. Verify all of these items together:
- The address resolves to the intended server.
- The SSH port in Coolify is the port on which that server listens.
- The SSH user is the account where the key was installed.
- The selected Coolify private key is the one whose public key was copied.
- The complete matching public key appears in that user’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keys.
Test with the same user and port from a terminal. If that test fails, correct the server-side authorization before trying validation again. If the terminal test succeeds but Coolify fails, inspect the server record for a different key, port, or username.

Permission errors
SSH may reject a key when the account’s SSH files are writable by other users or otherwise too permissive. Set the directory to mode 700 and authorized_keys to mode 600 for the target account. Check that the file is in the target user’s home directory, not in another account’s home. Keep an already working session open while correcting permissions and do not delete the current access key until the new one has been verified.

A timeout normally points to reachability rather than key content. Confirm that:
- The server is powered on and the address or hostname is correct.
- The SSH daemon is listening on the configured port.
- The server firewall allows that port.
- Any provider, router, security-group, or tunnel firewall allows the source address used by Coolify.
- Routing between Coolify and the server is present.
Fix the network rule, then run validation again. Replacing the private key will not resolve a packet that never reaches SSH.
Validation fails after a server change
Revalidate whenever you change the server’s IP address or domain, SSH user, SSH port, routing, firewall rules, or tunnel configuration. Coolify must test the new path and credentials; an old successful status does not prove that changed details still work.
Existing containers become unavailable
If workloads disappear briefly during validation, check whether Docker was installed or restarted. Coolify warns that validation can restart the Docker service. Allow the operation to finish, then inspect the host and application status. For future additions, use a fresh server or schedule validation when a temporary interruption is acceptable.

Use private networking when public SSH is undesirable
Coolify documents Server SSH Access through Cloudflare Tunnel for setups that need to keep the server’s IP private or close public SSH after initial setup. A tunnel changes the network path, so the hostname, port, routing, and tunnel-side firewall rules entered in Coolify must describe that path. After creating or changing the tunnel, run Validate connection again and troubleshoot it as a reachability problem first if the check times out.
Private networking does not remove the SSH identity requirement. The key still has to match the configured user, and the public key still belongs in that account’s authorized_keys with restrictive permissions.
Pre-validation and post-validation checklists
Before selecting Continue
- The Linux host is online and reachable from the Coolify installation.
- You know the exact address, SSH port, and SSH username.
- The relevant firewall permits the Coolify source address.
- The ED25519 private key is saved in Coolify without a passphrase.
- The matching public key is installed for the same user.
~/.sshis mode700andauthorized_keysis mode600.- You have preserved a working recovery session or console path.
- The server role matches whether this machine should build images, run workloads, or do both.
After validation succeeds
- The General page reports the server as reachable and validated.
- The displayed operating system, architecture, core count, memory, kernel, and Docker versions match expectations.
- Any existing containers affected by a Docker restart have recovered.
- The server appears as a selectable destination for the deployments permitted by its role.
- You have recorded the server name, role, SSH port, and maintenance implications for the team that will operate it.
How to tell whether the setup is correct
A correct setup has four matching layers: Coolify’s server record, the network route, the SSH daemon, and the account’s authorized key. The record supplies the address, port, user, and private key. The route and firewall deliver traffic to that port. The SSH daemon accepts the account. The account’s authorized_keys contains the corresponding public key with secure permissions. Once those layers align, validation can proceed to operating-system and Docker checks and finish with a reachable, validated status.
