Open the full game’s Steam store page, choose the demo action shown there—usually Add to Library or Download Demo—and then find the demo in your Library. To remove an installed demo from your computer, right-click it in Library, choose Manage, and select Uninstall.
Uninstalling removes the installed files locally. It is not the same as a developer deactivating a demo, and Valve’s published guidance does not establish one universal rule for whether every uninstalled demo remains listed in every user’s Library or can always be reinstalled from the same place.

What a Steam demo is
A Steam demo is a separate Steam application associated with a full game. Developers can present that demo on the full game’s store page so players can try the game before deciding whether to buy it. Valve documents demos and their store-page presentation in its Steamworks Demos documentation.

Before you start
- Sign in to the Steam account on which you want the demo associated.
- Open the store page for the full game. The demo control is presented there when the developer has made the demo available through that page.
- Use the Steam client for Library management. The store page can be opened in the client or a browser, but the installed files are managed from the client Library.
How to add a Steam demo to your Library
1. Open the full game’s store page
Search for the game in Steam Store and open its main store page. Do not search only for a generic “demo” entry unless Steam has provided one; the documented presentation associates the demo with the full game’s page.
2. Select the demo action Steam displays
Look for the demo control near the game’s purchase and other play options. Depending on how that page is configured, Steam may label it Add to Library or Download Demo. Select the label that appears on the page. The wording can differ between titles because the store presentation is configured per game.
If Steam offers Add to Library, choose it to associate the demo with your account. If it shows Download Demo, choose that demo action and follow Steam’s normal installation prompts. Do not substitute the full game’s purchase button: that is a different transaction.
3. Confirm the entry in Library
Switch to Library in the Steam client and search for the game’s name. A demo can appear as its own Library entry even though it is associated with the full game. If it has not been installed, Steam may show an install control rather than a Play control.

4. Install only when you are ready to play
Adding a demo to the account and installing its files are separate practical steps in Steam’s interface. If the demo is listed but not installed, select it in Library and use Steam’s install control. Choose the destination and let Steam finish downloading before launching it.
5. Launch from the demo’s entry
When installation is complete, select the demo’s Library entry and choose Play. If both the full game and demo are listed, verify that the title you selected is the demo entry; the two applications can have similar names.
How to uninstall an installed Steam demo
Use the Library context menu
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Find the demo in your game list. Use the Library search field if necessary.
- Right-click the demo’s entry.
- Select Manage.
- Select Uninstall, then confirm the prompt.

Uninstalling versus deactivating a demo
These terms describe different actions and different people performing them.

Valve uses “deactivate” for the developer action that blocks downloads and launches. Calling a player’s uninstall a deactivation can therefore lead to the wrong expectation about whether the demo can be obtained again.
Will uninstalling a demo remove it from your Steam Library?
There is no single, officially documented post-uninstall rule that covers every Steam demo. The available Valve and Steam Support pages explain how to add, deactivate, hide, and uninstall content, but they do not guarantee that every uninstalled demo will remain visible in the same Library location or that every demo can always be reinstalled from that entry.

- Installed state: the demo’s files are present on the computer and Steam can offer Play.
- Uninstalled state: the files have been removed locally; Steam may still show an account-associated entry, may show an install option, or may require you to revisit the game’s store page, depending on how that demo is handled.
Do not interpret the disappearance of a local installation as proof that your account license was permanently removed. Conversely, do not assume that a visible Library entry guarantees that the demo is still downloadable: a developer-deactivated demo can remain visible while downloads and launches are blocked.

Check Library filters
Steam’s Library can hide entries through filters such as installed games, collections, or platform views. Clear restrictive filters and search for the title again. If the demo was recently added, allow the client a moment to refresh and then restart Steam if the Library view still appears stale.
Check Hidden Games
Steam Support specifically recommends checking the hidden-games view when a title is missing. In the Steam client:

- Select Hidden Games.
- Find the demo in the hidden list.
- Right-click it, choose Manage, and select Remove from Hidden.

Return to the full game’s store page
If the demo is neither in the normal Library view nor in Hidden Games, open the full game’s store page again. The demo control may still be available there if the developer has left the demo active. If the page no longer offers a demo action, that can reflect a change in the game’s store configuration rather than a problem with your installation.
Consider developer deactivation
A developer can deactivate a demo. Valve’s documentation says that a deactivated demo cannot be downloaded or launched, while users who already have it in their Libraries may continue to see the entry. If you see an entry but Steam will not install or start it, uninstalling and reinstalling is unlikely to solve a deactivation-related block.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the non-Steam-game wizard
Steam’s Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library feature creates a shortcut to software already installed on your computer. It does not acquire a Steam demo from a game’s store page. Steam Support documents that separate shortcut workflow here: Add Non-Steam Games to a Library. For a Steam demo, use the demo action on the full game’s store page instead.

Right-clicking the full game instead of the demo
Games and their demos can be separate Library entries. Confirm the selected title before choosing Manage > Uninstall, especially when both entries have similar artwork or names.
Assuming uninstall deletes the account association
The uninstall command removes installed content from the computer. It is not documented as an account-license deletion command. Library visibility and future download availability can depend on the demo’s configuration.
Confusing a hidden entry with a deactivated demo
A hidden demo is a Library-view setting and can be restored with View > Hidden Games and Manage > Remove from Hidden. A deactivated demo is a developer-side availability change. Restoring a hidden entry will not bypass a deactivation.
A quick decision guide
- You want to try the game: open the full game’s store page and select the displayed demo action.
- You added it but cannot find it: clear Library filters, then check View > Hidden Games.
- You want to free disk space: use the demo’s Library entry and choose Manage > Uninstall.
- You see the entry but cannot download or launch: check whether the developer has deactivated the demo; local reinstall steps cannot restore a demo that Steam has disabled.
- You wonder whether it will remain listed after uninstalling: Steam’s official materials do not promise one universal result, so record the game’s store page and title if you may want to look for it again.
