What a WooCommerce wishlist does
A wishlist lets shoppers save products for later instead of placing them in the cart immediately. A useful implementation can support several lists per shopper, different privacy levels, sharing, and optional notifications when a saved item’s price changes.

The official WooCommerce Wishlists extension lets shoppers create unlimited lists. A list can be private, shared by link, or public. Signed-in customers retain their lists indefinitely. Guests can create lists, and a guest’s lists can be claimed when that visitor logs in or registers.
Because wishlist functionality is not described as a built-in WooCommerce catalog setting, adding it means installing and configuring an extension. The implementation you choose also determines how the button appears in product loops, whether block-theme editing is available, how guest data is handled, and what customization or API access you receive.

Check requirements and make the key decisions first
Use compatible WordPress and WooCommerce versions
The documented requirements for the official extension are WordPress 6.8 or later and WooCommerce 10.4 or later. Check both versions before uploading the ZIP. If your store is older, update in a staging environment first and verify that your theme, payment gateway, shipping extensions, and other production plugins remain compatible.
Decide how guests and customers should use lists
- Guest lists: Allowing guests to save items lowers the barrier for first-time visitors. Decide whether those lists can later be claimed by logging in or registering.
- Account lists: Signed-in customers can keep lists indefinitely, which is useful for repeat purchases and gift planning.
- Privacy: Choose whether lists are private, accessible through a sharing link, or public.
- First-list behavior: Decide whether the extension should create a shopper’s first list automatically.
- After-save behavior: Choose whether clicking the control leaves the shopper on the current page or redirects to the list.
- Control style: Decide whether the interface should be a button or a text link, then match its wording and styling to your theme.
- Notifications: Decide whether to offer price-drop notifications and whether shoppers should be prompted for a quantity when adding an item from a list.
Install the official WooCommerce Wishlists extension
- Download the extension ZIP from your WooCommerce account.
- In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New.
- Select Upload Plugin, choose the downloaded ZIP, and install it.
- Activate the extension when WordPress finishes the upload.
- Open the wishlist settings and confirm that the generated pages and options match your store’s navigation and privacy plan.
On activation, the extension creates five pages: Wishlists, Create a List, Manage List, Find a List, and View a List. It selects these pages in Wishlist Page Options, so you normally do not need to build replacement pages before testing.

Open WooCommerce > Settings > Wishlists. Work through the settings in a staging copy before enabling the feature on a busy store.
Guest and list creation settings
Enable or disable guest list creation according to your account strategy. If guests are allowed, test what happens when a guest later logs in or registers and claims the existing list. If you want every shopper to start with a ready-to-use list, enable automatic creation of the first list; otherwise require the shopper to use the create-list flow.

Save, redirect, and interface controls
Set the post-save redirect deliberately. Keeping shoppers on the product or catalog page supports browsing multiple items; redirecting them to the list gives immediate confirmation and exposes list-management actions. Select a button or text-link control and adjust its label so the action is understandable before and after a product is saved.
Sharing and privacy
Choose which social-sharing options appear and decide whether shoppers can make a list public, share it by link, or keep it private. Test each visibility level in a logged-out browser and in a separate customer account. A public or link-shared list should reveal only what you intend to publish, while private lists should remain inaccessible to other accounts.

Appearance, notifications, and quantities
The settings include custom colors and CSS controls for adapting the wishlist interface to your theme. If you enable price-drop notifications, explain the feature in your store’s privacy and account messaging so customers understand why they may receive an email. Enable quantity prompts when adding from a list if shoppers commonly save multiple units; leave them off when a one-click add-to-cart flow is more appropriate.
Place the Add to Wishlist control on product pages
Classic themes
With a classic theme, the extension adds the control automatically to product pages and product listings in the configured positions. There is normally nothing to insert by hand. Check both a single-product page and a shop or category loop, because a theme can alter hooks, markup, or styling even when the extension supplies the control.

Block themes
The extension registers Add to Wishlist and Wishlist blocks. To edit their placement, open Appearance > Editor, then edit the Single Product or Product Catalog template. Move, restyle, or remove the blocks from the template editor. The blocks follow the styling controls exposed through theme.json, allowing site-wide typography, spacing, and color rules where the theme supports them.

Make the wishlist discoverable
The extension creates the functional pages, but it does not automatically add wishlist links to your site’s navigation. Add a link to the Wishlists page manually in your header, account menu, mobile menu, or another location shoppers already use. If you support public or shared lists, make Find a List easy to reach as well.
Check the generated pages for page-title conflicts, breadcrumbs, caching, and mobile layout. A page can exist and be selected correctly in the settings while still being hidden by a theme’s menu, template, or visibility rule.

- Open a product while logged out and confirm that the Add to Wishlist control appears in the intended position.
- Save the product as a guest and verify the confirmation, redirect behavior, and list contents.
- Open the list-management view and create a second list to confirm that unlimited-list behavior is available to the shopper.
- Log in or register using the guest session and confirm that the guest list can be claimed rather than disappearing.
- As a signed-in customer, test private, link-shared, and public visibility with a separate browser or account.
- Open a shop or category archive and verify that the control appears in the product loop as well as on the single-product template.
- Move the item from the list to the cart, testing any quantity prompt and the behavior for products that are out of stock or unavailable.
- If price-drop notifications are enabled, check the opt-in, account display, and email wording before sending real customer messages.
- Test the generated pages on mobile, with page caching enabled, and with the store’s analytics and consent tools active.
Use the wishlist REST API when the built-in interface is not enough
The official extension exposes wishlist data through the wc-wishlists/v1 REST API namespace, including routes for lists and list items. This is the option to investigate when a headless storefront, account dashboard, mobile app, or custom integration needs to read or manipulate wishlist data beyond the standard pages and blocks.
Before exposing API-driven actions, define authentication, ownership, and privacy rules. A private list should not become readable merely because a front-end application knows a list identifier. Test permissions with a guest, the list owner, and an unrelated signed-in customer.

Compare third-party wishlist plugins
The first-party extension is not the only route. A third-party plugin may fit a store that already depends on a particular theme, builder, reporting workflow, or extension ecosystem. Compare maintenance, compatibility, guest behavior, presentation controls, sharing, notifications, and support before switching.

Migration, updates, and compatibility precautions
Upgrading an older wishlist installation
If you are upgrading from an older WooCommerce Wishlists release, review the extension’s template and CSS changes before updating production. Legacy button templates, selectors, URL behavior, and filter behavior may have changed. Compare your theme overrides with the current templates, test custom CSS selectors, and verify every saved-link flow after the update.
Theme and extension compatibility
Wishlist controls depend on product-page and catalog-loop markup. A heavily customized theme or builder can move or hide a control, while aggressive optimization can cache one customer’s list state for another visitor. Purge and rebuild caches after installation, exclude account-sensitive responses from page caching where necessary, and test with your cart, account, product-filter, and analytics extensions enabled.

Guest lists need a way to be recognized without granting another visitor access to someone else’s data. When evaluating a third-party option, check how guest identifiers, nonces, share keys, and ownership checks are implemented. Re-test list reads and writes after every plugin update, especially when a release mentions guest-list security or changes URL behavior.
Troubleshoot common problems
The button is missing
- Confirm the extension is active and the product is eligible for wishlist actions.
- On a block theme, edit the Single Product or Product Catalog template and add the registered block if it was removed.
- On a classic theme, inspect the theme’s product hooks and template overrides for removed or relocated output.
- Clear page, object, and browser caches, then test in a logged-out window.
The wrong product is saved
- Check the product ID passed to
wc_wishlists_add_link. - Ensure a builder has not duplicated hidden product data from another loop item.
- Test the shortcode on a single product before placing it inside a custom archive template.
A guest list disappears after registration
- Repeat the flow in a clean browser session and confirm that the guest list was created before login.
- Check the extension’s guest-list and account-claim settings.
- If using a third-party plugin, verify that its current release supports transferring guest data to the new account and that cache or privacy tools are not blocking the handoff.
Sharing exposes too much or too little
- Test each visibility mode from an unrelated account and a logged-out browser.
- Confirm that a shared link points to the intended list page rather than a private management URL.
- Review social-sharing options and remove channels your store does not want to expose.
Styles break after an update
- Compare your theme’s wishlist template overrides and CSS selectors with the current extension files.
- Prefer block and
theme.jsoncontrols where available instead of targeting fragile generated markup. - Re-test button states, list tables, notices, and mobile layouts after clearing compiled CSS and caches.
Which approach should you choose?
Choose the official WooCommerce Wishlists extension when you want the documented WooCommerce integration, automatic page creation, guest-list claiming, classic and block-theme support, shortcodes, and a REST namespace in one implementation. Its documented version requirements should be satisfied before installation.
Choose a third-party plugin only after matching its current maintenance and compatibility to your store. YITH may suit a site that needs its shortcode and template-override workflow.
