If your Counter-Strike 1.6 server is missing from the LAN tab, first check that every player is on the same local network, then allow UDP port 27015 through the host’s firewall. Keep the dedicated server on port 27015, use the host’s private IPv4 address—not its public address—and connect directly with connect HOST-LAN-IP:27015 if the browser remains empty. LAN discovery can fail even while the server is running.

What the missing LAN entry usually means
A blank LAN list does not necessarily mean HLDS (the Half-Life Dedicated Server) failed to start. It commonly means that discovery traffic cannot reach the server, or that the game port is blocked before a player can query it. Windows Firewall, antivirus firewalls, router filtering and network isolation can all prevent unsolicited incoming packets.

For a normal dedicated server, Valve’s Developer Community documentation identifies UDP 27015 as the game-traffic and ping port. That is the rule that matters most for players on a local network. The same documentation lists TCP 27015 for RCON, UDP 27020 for HLTV and UDP 26900 for the VAC service. Those additional ports do not make a server appear in the LAN browser if UDP 27015 is blocked.
The precise broadcast mechanism and broadcast port used by the old LAN browser are not confirmed by the available Valve documentation. Therefore, treat browser visibility as a convenience check rather than proof that the server is unreachable. A direct connection to the host’s LAN address is the decisive test.

Fix it in the right order
- Verify that the host and every player are on the same local network.
- Find the host computer’s private IPv4 address with
ipconfig. - Allow inbound UDP 27015 in the host’s firewall and any security suite that filters network traffic.
- Leave the HLDS server on port 27015 while troubleshooting.
- Try a direct console connection using the LAN address.
- If that succeeds, add the address to Favorites and then tighten the firewall rules rather than leaving protection disabled.
Work through the steps in this sequence. Changing server variables before checking reachability often hides the real cause.
1. Confirm that everyone is on the same LAN
Use the same local network, not merely the same internet connection
The host and clients must be connected to the same local network. Wi-Fi and Ethernet can work together; the important point is that they are on the same LAN and can address one another. A guest Wi-Fi network, client-isolation setting or a second router that separates devices can make two machines appear to share an internet connection while preventing local game traffic.
- On the host, note the IPv4 address shown by
ipconfig. - Check that each player’s device has a private address in the same local address range (for example, addresses issued by the same home router).
- Do not use the router’s public/WAN address for a LAN game.
- If one computer is connected through a guest network or isolated access point, move it to the main network before testing again.
These network checks are based on community troubleshooting reports, so router menus and terminology vary by manufacturer. If the machines cannot communicate locally, no CS 1.6 setting can make the LAN list reliable.
2. Find the correct host IP address
Windows command
- On the computer running HLDS, press
Win+R, typecmd, and press Enter. - Run
ipconfig. - Under the adapter that is actually connected, locate IPv4 Address.
- Write down that private address, such as
192.168.x.xor10.x.x.x. The exact value depends on the local router.
Ignore disconnected adapters, virtual-machine adapters and VPN addresses. A laptop can show several IPv4 values; use the address belonging to the Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection shared with the players.

3. Open the ports HLDS actually uses

Port assignments above follow the Valve Developer Community wiki’s dedicated-server reference. Third-party port lists conflict with Valve’s list, so use Valve’s values as the primary reference for an HLDS installation.
Create a Windows Firewall rule for UDP 27015
In Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security, create an inbound rule for UDP port 27015. The label can be something recognizable such as “CS 1.6 HLDS UDP 27015.” Apply it to the network profile the host is using and allow the connection. If your firewall offers an application rule, allow hlds.exe (or the executable used by your installation) as well.

Do not open every port in an attempt to make discovery work; start with the specific UDP rule and add only services you use.
Check antivirus and other software firewalls
Some antivirus suites install their own network filter. A useful diagnostic is to disable that filter briefly, start the server, and have another player try to connect. If the connection works only while protection is disabled, turn the protection back on immediately and create a specific allow rule for hlds.exe or the Counter-Strike game binary, plus UDP 27015. Do not treat a permanently disabled firewall as the fix.

The Valve documentation suggests two practical tests: ask another player to attempt a connection while you watch the server, or monitor incoming UDP traffic on port 27015 with a network monitor. An incoming packet confirms that traffic is reaching the host; a server log or connection response then shows whether HLDS is accepting it.
4. Keep the server on port 27015 while diagnosing
HLDS can be configured to use another port, but that complicates an already ambiguous LAN-browser problem. A Steam discussion reports that the legacy LAN browser checks only a narrow range of ports, so a server moved outside the usual range may be running yet omitted from the list. This is a community report rather than a confirmed Valve specification, but it gives a practical reason to restore the default.
Start the dedicated server without a custom port override, or explicitly set the standard port in the launch options:
+port 27015After changing the port, restart HLDS and update any firewall rule to match. Players must use the same port in a direct connection. Do not troubleshoot a custom port and firewall policy at the same time; return to 27015 first, prove the basic path, and customize later if necessary.

5. Test a direct connection instead of relying on the LAN tab
Console command
- Start CS 1.6 on the client computer.
- Enable the developer console in the game’s keyboard or advanced options if it is not already enabled.
- Open the console with the console key.
- Enter
connect HOST-LAN-IP:27015, replacingHOST-LAN-IPwith the address found on the server computer. For example:connect 192.168.1.25:27015. - Press Enter and watch for the connection result.
This command bypasses the server-browser listing. If it connects, HLDS is working and the remaining problem is discovery or browser filtering, not the map or server process itself. If it times out, focus on the network path and firewall rather than changing sv_lan.
Add the server to Favorites
Use the game’s server-browser Favorites function to save the same LAN address and port. Favorites provide a second way to reach a known server when the LAN tab does not populate. Save the numeric private IP and 27015; do not save the public address for a same-LAN session.
6. Interpret the result of each test

Should you change sv_lan?
Reports from CS 1.6 players describe toggling sv_lan as an occasional suggestion, but also say it is rarely the real fix for a server missing from the LAN list. The reports conflict, and they do not establish a single setting that repairs firewall or routing failures.
Use the default LAN configuration unless you have a specific reason to change it. First prove that the host is reachable at its LAN IP and UDP 27015. Changing sv_lan cannot open a blocked port, move a player out of a guest network or make a public address behave like a private one.

Router and firewall details for a same-LAN game
Host firewall versus internet port forwarding
For players connected to the same local network, the host’s operating-system firewall is usually the first place to check. A router’s internet port-forwarding rule is primarily for unsolicited connections arriving from outside the home network. Do not expose a game server to the internet merely because the LAN browser is empty.
If a router or security appliance filters traffic between local clients, its local firewall or isolation settings may also need adjustment. The exact menu names differ, so verify the setting on the device that separates the players from the host. The minimum useful test remains a direct connection to the host’s private IP on UDP 27015.
Why the Internet tab is a different problem
A server missing from the Internet tab is not the same as a server missing from the LAN tab. Internet visibility depends on master-server services, external reachability and public-server configuration. A LAN test can succeed while the Internet tab remains empty, and fixing a LAN firewall rule does not guarantee registration with an internet master server.
One third-party guide proposes editing masterserver.vdf in the cstrike folder, but that advice comes from an unverified download site rather than a confirmed Valve reference. Treat it as unverified and do not modify that file as the first response to a local-network visibility problem. Establish direct LAN connectivity first.
Common mistakes that keep the list empty
- Using the public IP: Players on the same router should try the host’s private IPv4 address.
- Opening only TCP: HLDS game traffic and pings use UDP 27015; a TCP-only rule does not replace it.
- Opening the wrong port: RCON’s TCP 27015 and optional HLTV/VAC ports do not substitute for the main UDP rule.
- Testing with a custom port: Restore 27015 while diagnosing browser visibility.
- Leaving antivirus disabled: Use temporary disabling only as a test, then create a narrow exception.
- Assuming the browser is authoritative: A successful direct connection proves the server is reachable even if the LAN list remains blank.
- Changing
sv_lanfirst: A variable change cannot repair a blocked route or firewall rule.
A compact recovery checklist
- Connect the host and clients to the same main Wi-Fi or wired LAN.
- Run
ipconfigon the host and copy its active private IPv4 address. - Ensure HLDS is listening on port 27015.
- Allow inbound UDP 27015 for HLDS in Windows Firewall and any antivirus firewall.
- Restart HLDS after changing its port or firewall rule.
- From a client, run
connect HOST-LAN-IP:27015. - If it connects, save the address in Favorites and stop treating the empty LAN tab as a connectivity failure.
- If it fails, temporarily test with the firewall filter disabled, then restore protection and create a specific exception based on the result.
Bottom line for “CS 1.6 server not showing in LAN”
The dependable path is: same local network, host’s private IPv4 address, inbound UDP 27015 allowed, and the server left on the default port. The LAN browser can be incomplete or unable to discover a reachable server, so test with connect HOST-LAN-IP:27015 and use Favorites when necessary. Treat TCP 27015 as an optional RCON rule, and do not expect sv_lan or an unverified Internet-tab tweak to fix a blocked LAN connection.
