To add an Instagram feed to WordPress now, use a maintained plugin that connects through Instagram’s Graph API, and connect a Professional Instagram account (Creator or Business). Personal accounts are not eligible for this route. The older Instagram Basic Display API was retired on December 4, 2024, so tutorials or plugins built around it can no longer be relied on.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The practical workflow is: convert the account, install a plugin whose changelog confirms Graph API support, connect the account through that plugin’s current authorization screen, place the feed on your site, and test it on the public front end. If an old feed stopped working, remove the obsolete connection and authorize the account again rather than trying to reuse its old token.

- Use a Professional Instagram account. Switch the profile to Creator or Business; a Personal profile will not connect through the current Graph API route.
- Choose a maintained WordPress plugin. Look for a recent changelog entry mentioning the Instagram Graph API or the current Instagram Login flow. A plugin that has not been updated since before December 4, 2024 is a warning sign.
- Connect from the plugin’s own connection screen. The migration away from Basic Display means an older saved connection may need to be deleted and recreated.
- Insert the feed using the plugin’s supported WordPress integration. Depending on the plugin, that may be a block, widget, shortcode, or page-builder element; use the method documented for the installed version.
- Check the public page and the plugin changelog. Confirm that images load for logged-out visitors and that the plugin still lists current Instagram compatibility.
Why older Instagram-to-WordPress tutorials fail
Many older guides tell you to create an Instagram Basic Display application, copy a Basic Display token, or install a plugin that was written for that API. Instagram Basic Display was retired on December 4, 2024. A feed depending on that service can stop updating, show an authorization error, or disappear entirely even though the WordPress settings have not changed.
The replacement route is the Instagram Graph API. It is intended for Professional Instagram accounts: Creator and Business profiles. That is why changing the account type is a prerequisite rather than an optional optimization. A personal profile can still be used normally in the Instagram app, but it is not eligible for the current Graph API feed connection described here.

The shutdown also changes how you repair an existing site. Re-entering an old token or repeating the steps from a pre-shutdown tutorial does not migrate the connection. You need a plugin that supports the new route and must authorize the account again through that plugin.
Prepare your Instagram account and WordPress site
1. Confirm the Instagram account type
Open the Instagram app, go to your profile and account settings, and choose the option to switch to a professional account. Instagram’s labels and menu order can vary by app version, but the destination is the Professional account setup. Select Creator or Business, complete the category and contact prompts, and return to the profile. If the account is already marked Creator or Business, do not switch it back to Personal while troubleshooting the feed.

| Personal | No | Switch to Creator or Business before connecting. |
| Creator | Yes | Use the plugin’s current Instagram connection flow. |
| Business | Yes | Use the plugin’s current Instagram connection flow. |
2. Make sure WordPress can accept a plugin
You need administrator access to the WordPress dashboard to install or update a plugin. On a self-hosted site, open Plugins > Add New, search for the chosen plugin, select Install Now, and then Activate. Managed WordPress hosts may restrict plugin installation; in that case, the site administrator or host must perform the installation.

Before changing a working site, record the page or template where the existing feed appears and make a backup according to your normal WordPress procedure. This is especially useful when replacing a plugin whose old connection is broken.
Which WordPress plugin should you use?
No Meta-published, official WordPress.org feed plugin was identified in the available material. The options below are names that appeared in current plugin coverage, not the result of a neutral performance test. Treat the changelog and the plugin’s own connection instructions as the deciding evidence.
| Plugin | How it appeared in current coverage | Check before installing |
|---|---|---|
| Spotlight | Listed as a maintained Instagram feed option. | Confirm the installed version uses the Graph API and supports your Creator or Business account. |
| Smash Balloon | Reported to require users to reconnect through a new method after the Basic Display shutdown. | Use its post-shutdown reconnection flow; do not rely on a saved Basic Display token. |
| WPZOOM Instagram Widget | Listed as an available WordPress feed option. | Check the latest compatibility note, account requirements, and the way it places a feed in your theme. |
| Intagrate Lite | The only Instagram feed listing surfaced in the WordPress.org results. | Read the current changelog carefully and verify that its present release uses the supported API route. |
| The Plus Addons | Presented as an Elementor-oriented option. | Confirm the Elementor integration, Graph API support, and whether the needed Instagram element is included in your edition. |
Commercial roundups commonly divide plugins into free and paid tiers, but their rankings are vendor-influenced and do not establish that one plugin is objectively best. Rank #3
- Does the current changelog explicitly mention Instagram Graph API support or the current Instagram Login method?
- Does it accept both Creator and Business accounts, if your account may change later?
- Can it render in your editor or theme: block editor, widget areas, shortcode locations, or Elementor?
- Can you reconnect or revoke an account without rebuilding every feed?
- Is support available for authorization failures after an API change?
Step-by-step: connect an Instagram feed with a plugin
Step 1: Select a plugin with a recent compatibility record
Open the plugin’s changelog or release notes before installing it. You are looking for a release after the Basic Display retirement, with explicit mention of the Instagram Graph API or the current Instagram Login process. “Instagram feed” in a feature list is not enough if the documentation still describes Basic Display.
Step 2: Install and activate it in WordPress
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New.
- Search the exact plugin name and check that the author, update date, and compatibility information match the plugin you evaluated.
- Select Install Now, then Activate.
- Open the new plugin menu or settings link. The location and label differ by plugin, so follow the installed version’s instructions rather than a screenshot from an older tutorial.
Step 3: Start a new Instagram connection
Find the plugin’s Instagram connection screen and choose its current connect, add account, or authorize option. Sign in to the Professional Instagram account and approve the permissions presented by the live authorization screen. The exact permission names and sequence can change; do not substitute a token copied from an old Basic Display setup.
If the plugin shows an existing connection created before December 4, 2024, remove or disconnect it first when the plugin provides that option. Then start a fresh connection. Plugins that migrated users after the shutdown, including options such as Smash Balloon, reportedly required this reconnection step.
Rank #4
Step 4: Select the account and feed settings
Choose the connected Instagram profile in the plugin interface. Configure only the options your plugin exposes, such as the number of posts, columns, spacing, captions, or a link back to Instagram. Do not assume that a setting shown in a third-party tutorial exists in your edition; free and paid tiers can expose different controls, and exact feature limits are not established here.

Use the placement method supported by the plugin:
- Block editor: insert the plugin’s feed block in the page or template where the stream should appear.
- Widget area: add the plugin widget under Appearance > Widgets if the theme exposes that area.
- Shortcode: copy the shortcode generated by the plugin and paste it into a Shortcode block or the plugin-supported template location.
- Elementor: use the plugin’s documented widget or element. The Plus Addons is specifically oriented toward Elementor, while the other options may use different integrations.
Save or publish the page, then open its public URL in a private browser window. A logged-out test catches feeds that appear only to the administrator because of a cached session or incomplete authorization.
Step 6: Verify updates and record the connection
Check that the feed displays current posts, that links open the intended Instagram content, and that the layout works on a phone-sized screen. Record the plugin name and the date you connected it. When WordPress or the plugin reports an update, read the changelog for Instagram compatibility notes before updating a production site.

The account will not connect
- Confirm that the Instagram profile is Creator or Business. Personal accounts are not eligible for this Graph API route.
- Open the plugin changelog. If its last meaningful update predates December 4, 2024, treat it as a likely Basic Display dependency and choose a maintained alternative.
- Disconnect the old account inside the plugin and authorize it again from the current connection screen. Reusing an old token does not perform the migration.
- Sign out of the wrong Instagram account in the authorization window, then repeat the connection while signed in to the intended profile.
The connection succeeds but the feed is blank
- View the page while logged out or in a private window. If only administrators see posts, the site may be serving a cached authenticated response.
- Clear the page cache and any CDN cache after the first successful connection, then reload the public URL.
- Check whether the plugin has a separate “select feed,” “source,” or “display” step after account authorization.
- Temporarily switch to the plugin’s simplest layout. If posts appear, add styling options back one at a time to identify a layout conflict.
- Review the plugin’s error notice and current support guidance. Exact API endpoints and permission requirements can change and must be confirmed against live documentation.
The feed broke after a plugin or WordPress update
Read the plugin changelog for a compatibility note before rolling back anything. If the release mentions Instagram API changes, follow its reconnection instructions. Keep a copy of the previous page layout so you can restore the placement after replacing an obsolete plugin.
A guide says a Facebook Page is required
Requirements differ between connection paths. One current guide describes an Instagram Login setup that does not require a Facebook Page, while another describes migration that includes linking one. That conflict is not resolved by the general WordPress steps above. Follow the requirement shown by your plugin’s live authorization flow and verify it in Meta’s current developer documentation; do not create or link a Page solely because an old tutorial says it is mandatory.
Free versus paid plugins: what can actually be compared
A “free” label does not establish Graph API compatibility, and a paid tier does not guarantee that an authorization issue is solved. The available coverage confirms that both free and paid choices exist, but it does not establish a reliable price list or a neutral feature ranking. Use this decision table before choosing:
| Decision question | Why it matters | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a current Graph API or Instagram Login changelog entry? | Separates maintained integrations from pre-shutdown Basic Display code. | Must be checked on the plugin’s live changelog. |
| Is the required account type supported? | Creator and Business profiles are the eligible account types for this route. | Confirm in the plugin’s current documentation. |
| Does it fit your editor? | A block, widget, shortcode, and Elementor element have different setup and styling implications. | Varies by plugin; not stated uniformly. |
| What does it cost? | Price and feature limits affect a site with several feeds or advanced layouts. | Exact prices and recurring terms are not established here. |
| Can you get help after an API change? | Instagram integrations can break when Meta changes an API. | Check the plugin’s support policy and recent update history. |
Building a custom integration instead of using a plugin
A custom build is possible when you need a layout or workflow that available plugins do not provide, but it requires ongoing API maintenance. One setup guide describes an Instagram Login path in the Meta app dashboard for Instagram accounts, distinct from Facebook Login, which targets Facebook Pages. That is a single-source description, so verify the current product names, permissions, endpoints, and review requirements in Meta’s live developer documentation before writing code.
For a custom implementation, plan for token storage, token renewal, error handling, rate limits, caching, and a fallback message when Instagram is unavailable. Never expose an access token in page HTML or client-side JavaScript. If your site only needs a standard photo grid, a maintained plugin is usually less operational work than owning this integration yourself.
Maintenance checklist
- Keep the Instagram profile as Creator or Business.
- Read the plugin changelog before updates, especially entries mentioning Instagram, Graph API, or Login.
- Test the feed on the public page after plugin, WordPress, theme, or caching changes.
- Reauthorize through the plugin when it reports an expired or migrated connection; do not paste an obsolete Basic Display token.
- Remove abandoned feed plugins and their old credentials from WordPress.
- Document the plugin name, account used, placement location, and reconnection date for the next site administrator.
The practical answer
Use a Creator or Business Instagram account and a WordPress plugin that explicitly supports the Instagram Graph API after the December 4, 2024 Basic Display retirement. Connect it through the plugin’s current authorization screen, place the feed with the integration your editor supports, and verify the result while logged out. When an old feed fails, replace or update the integration and reconnect the account instead of repeating a Basic Display tutorial.
