Use tar -xzf archive.tar.gz to extract a gzip-compressed tar archive in your current directory. The -x option extracts, -z selects gzip decompression, and -f tells tar which archive to read. To choose another destination, add -C /path/to/destination.

What a .tar.gz file is
A .tar.gz file has two layers. First, tar bundles one or more files and directories into a single archive stream. Gzip then compresses that stream. Extraction reverses both layers: tar reads the archive and gzip decompression makes the archived data available.

The name .tgz is another commonly recognized suffix for a gzip-compressed tar archive. A file ending in .tgz is handled with the same tar options as a file ending in .tar.gz.
This is different from a plain .tar archive, which has the tar container but no gzip compression layer. Do not assume that every file with “tar” in its name uses gzip; the compression option must match the actual format.

Extract the entire archive in the current directory
Open a terminal, change to the directory containing the archive, and run:
tar -xzf archive.tar.gzReplace archive.tar.gz with the exact filename. The command writes the archive’s members into your current working directory. It does not alter the original archive, so you can repeat the extraction if needed.

If you are unsure which directory the shell is using, run:
pwd
lspwd prints the current directory. ls shows the files there; use it to confirm that the archive name is present and spelled correctly. If the archive is elsewhere, supply its path, for example:
tar -xzf /home/alex/Downloads/archive.tar.gzPaths containing spaces should be quoted:
tar -xzf "/home/alex/My Downloads/archive.tar.gz"Understand the options

Short options can be combined as -xzf. Writing them separately, as -x -z -f archive.tar.gz, expresses the same operation.
Extract to a different directory
Use tar’s -C option when the files should go somewhere other than the directory from which you run the command.

mkdir -p /path/to/destination - Extract into that directory:
tar -xzf archive.tar.gz -C /path/to/destination
The destination supplied to -C must be a directory that exists by the time tar starts extracting. mkdir -p creates missing parent directories and does nothing if the directory is already present.

Use a directory under your home folder
For example, to unpack an archive into a new folder named game-files in your home directory:
mkdir -p "$HOME/game-files"
tar -xzf archive.tar.gz -C "$HOME/game-files"Using $HOME avoids hard-coding a particular username. Quote a destination when its path contains spaces.
Permission errors at the destination
If tar reports that it cannot create a file or directory, choose a location where your current user can write. A directory inside your home folder is usually appropriate for personal files. Use elevated privileges only when the destination genuinely requires them; changing permissions or running a command with elevated privileges does not correct a wrong path or a malformed archive.

Preview the archive before writing files
List the archive’s members without extracting anything:
tar -tzf archive.tar.gzHere -t means list or table of contents, while -z and -f retain their gzip and filename roles. Previewing is useful when you need to know whether the archive contains a top-level directory, the exact spelling of a file, or a path that you want to extract selectively.
Use the listing as the source of exact member names
Tar member names are matched as paths. Copy the path exactly as it appears in the listing, including capitalization and directory separators. A listing such as:
project/
project/readme.txt
project/bin/launchermeans that project/readme.txt and project/bin/launcher are valid member names to request.

Extract only one file or a selected path
First list the archive, then pass the desired member path after the archive name:
tar -tzf archive.tar.gz
tar -xzf archive.tar.gz path/inside/archive.txtThe second command extracts the named member instead of unpacking every member. You can specify more than one selected path by adding each exact member name after the archive filename:
tar -xzf archive.tar.gz docs/readme.txt docs/license.txtIf the member is inside a directory, include the directory components exactly as shown by tar -tzf. Selecting a path that is not present produces an error rather than extracting a similarly named file.
Extract a directory’s contents
If the listing shows a directory entry, you can name that directory to extract the directory and its archived contents:
tar -xzf archive.tar.gz project/Preview first when you are unsure whether the archive stores the directory with a trailing slash or uses a different top-level name.
Use .tgz archives
The same syntax works for the alternate suffix:
tar -xzf package.tgzPreview or redirect a .tgz archive in exactly the same way:
tar -tzf package.tgz
tar -xzf package.tgz -C /path/to/destinationThe suffix is a naming convention; the important detail is that the archive is a tar stream compressed with gzip.

Can you omit -z?
GNU tar can recognize compression automatically for a regular archive file, so this commonly works:

tar -xf archive.tar.gzWith this form, -x still requests extraction and -f still identifies the file; tar detects the compression for the regular archive. Keeping -z is clearer because it documents that gzip is expected and makes the command’s intent visible to anyone reading it.
Automatic recognition does not mean that every input can omit the option. When compressed data arrives through a pipe, GNU tar’s documented form explicitly includes gzip handling:
cat archive.tar.gz | tar tzf -In that command, cat sends the archive bytes to standard input, and the hyphen tells tar to read the archive from that stream. The z option identifies gzip compression. For a pipe that extracts rather than lists, use the corresponding extraction operation:
cat archive.tar.gz | tar xzf -For an ordinary file on disk, tar -xzf archive.tar.gz remains the most explicit, portable-looking instruction for a reader following a guide.
Common errors and their fixes
“No such file or directory”
This usually means the shell cannot find the archive path you supplied. Check the current directory and filename:
pwd
lsCorrect a typo, change into the directory that contains the archive, or provide the archive’s absolute path. Remember that Linux filenames are case-sensitive, so Archive.tar.gz and archive.tar.gz are different names.

“Cannot open” or a permission error
There are two separate locations to check: the archive must be readable, and the destination must be writable. Confirm that the filename points to the intended file and extract into a directory your user can write, such as a directory below $HOME. If a system-owned destination is required, use the account and permissions appropriate for that system rather than treating elevated privileges as a general fix.
The command lists files but does not extract them
You used the table-of-contents operation, -t, instead of the extraction operation, -x. Listing is non-destructive by design:
tar -tzf archive.tar.gzTo write the members to disk, run:
tar -xzf archive.tar.gzA pipe says the archive is compressed
When tar reads from standard input, add the gzip option explicitly. The documented listing pattern is:
cat archive.tar.gz | tar tzf -For extraction from the same stream, replace t with x:
cat archive.tar.gz | tar xzf -The file is not actually gzip-compressed
A filename alone is not proof of the data format. If tar reports that the input is not gzip-compressed, inspect the name and the complete error output. A plain .tar archive uses tar without gzip handling, while other compression formats require their corresponding tar options. Do not force -z onto an archive whose data is not gzip-compressed.
The selected member cannot be found
Run tar -tzf archive.tar.gz again and copy the member path exactly. A file may be nested under a top-level directory, use different capitalization, or have a slightly different extension. Tar matches the archived path, not merely the final filename.
Files appear in an unexpected location
Tar extracts relative to the current directory unless you provide -C. Run pwd before extraction, preview the listing, and use an explicit destination when you need predictable placement:
mkdir -p /path/to/destination
tar -xzf archive.tar.gz -C /path/to/destinationCommand reference

A reliable workflow
- Locate the archive with
pwdandls, or identify its full path. - Preview its members with
tar -tzf archive.tar.gz. - Decide whether you need every member, one path, or a separate destination.
- Create the destination with
mkdir -pwhen necessary. - Run the matching extraction command with
-x, keeping-zexplicit for gzip. - If an error appears, use the wording of the error to check the filename, permissions, input type, and exact member path rather than changing unrelated options.
For the ordinary case, the complete answer is tar -xzf archive.tar.gz. Use tar -tzf to inspect first, add -C to control the destination, and name an archived path when only selected files are required.
