1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo add background music to a looping FFmpeg stream, repeat the video and music inputs, then either route the music alone or mix it with the video’s existing audio using amix. Map the video and chosen audio explicitly, encode for the protocol selected in YouTube Live Control Room, and test before going live. The examples below are starting patterns: check your files, FFmpeg build, stream settings and music rights before using them.
Choose how the video and music should loop
FFmpeg treats the video loop and audio loop as separate jobs. For a complete file that should repeat, input-level -stream_loop -1 is a straightforward option. FFmpeg also documents a loop video filter for repeating decoded frames and an aloop audio filter for repeating decoded samples. Use the input option for a whole-file repeat; use a filter when you need to loop frames or a selected audio segment. Filter options and behavior are documented in the FFmpeg filters reference and FFmpeg command-line documentation.
| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
-stream_loop -1 before an input |
Repeat the complete video or music file. | Check timestamps and stream behavior for your output and confirm the file has the streams you expect. |
Video loop filter |
Repeat decoded video frames, such as a selected frame segment. | Choose the frame count and start point, and manage the graph’s output duration. |
Audio aloop filter |
Repeat a decoded sample segment rather than a complete music file. | Its size option controls the maximum samples in the loop. Choose a meaningful size and start; a poorly matched loop point can create an audible seam. |
Replace the source audio or mix it with music?
Use music alone
If the video is silent or you want to replace its sound, map the music input’s audio stream as the output audio. Do not reference [0:a] in a filtergraph unless input 0 actually has an audio stream.
Keep the video’s audio underneath the music
Use amix to combine the source audio and music. Set its duration behavior and weights deliberately. The filter normalizes by default; disabling normalization can cause heavy clipping if the combined levels are not controlled. FFmpeg’s documentation includes an example with music at one-quarter weight and normalization disabled, but that is an illustration, not a recommended level for every recording. Listen to the result and check for clipping rather than treating weights as a substitute for audio level decisions. See the FFmpeg filter documentation for amix options.

Starting command for a video with existing audio
This pattern assumes input 0 is a video with audio and input 1 is music. It repeats both complete files, mixes their audio with the source weighted at 1 and the music at 0.25, maps the video and mixed audio, then sends an FLV stream to an RTMP-style destination. The weights are example values, not a universal mix.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i loop.mp4 -stream_loop -1 -re -i music.mp3
-filter_complex "[0:a][1:a]amix=inputs=2:duration=first:weights='1 0.25':normalize=1[aout]"
-map 0:v:0 -map "[aout]"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmp://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested or copy-paste guarantee. Confirm the local FFmpeg build and actual input stream layouts. If the video has no audio or you want music only, remove the mix graph and map the music audio stream instead, for example with -map 1:a:0; keep -map 0:v:0 for the video. Replace the destination with the server URL and stream key from YouTube, and never expose a real key in examples, screenshots or logs. YouTube recommends secure RTMPS ingestion, so use the server URL and protocol associated with the stream key you selected rather than assuming the RTMP-style example destination applies unchanged.

Loop only a segment of the music
For a decoded audio segment, the graph can use a pattern such as [1:a]aloop=loop=-1:size=SIZE[music], where SIZE must be replaced with a meaningful sample count for the intended loop. The filter’s size and start determine what is repeated; consult the filter help for your FFmpeg build and check the loop point by listening. If you want the whole music file to repeat, input-level -stream_loop -1 before that input is simpler.
Match the output to YouTube’s stream settings
The right encoder settings depend on your selected ingestion protocol, resolution and frame rate. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds, with frame rates up to 60 fps. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS audio, its advanced settings list 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube’s settings guidance, not experimental performance results; consult the current YouTube encoder settings for your chosen protocol and format.

- Use the stream key and server URL associated with the protocol selected in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS; HLS has its own protocol-specific guidance and segment settings, and higher latency.
- Set video resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec and keyframe interval for the stream format you plan to send. Do not treat one bitrate as universal across resolutions and frame rates.
- Map one video stream and the intended audio stream explicitly. FFmpeg documents multi-input filtergraphs as complex filtergraphs and supports manual stream mapping in its command-line reference.
- Test with representative video and music before going live, then monitor stream health and YouTube’s messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder guidance.
Check music rights before broadcasting
A file that works technically is not automatically cleared for a live broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may show a placeholder image and warning; if the content continues, the stream can be temporarily interrupted or terminated. YouTube also warns: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the third-party content.” Confirm with the rights owner that your license covers live streaming, territories, any archived copy, and any required channel allowlisting. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
YouTube’s live-stream terms say providers must have necessary rights for live content, including “music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the complete YouTube live-stream terms and confirm your specific permissions rather than assuming a general music license covers every use.

Troubleshoot common problems
- FFmpeg reports that input 0 has no audio stream: the mix graph references
[0:a], but the video is silent or has a different stream layout. Inspect the inputs and use music alone, or adjust the graph to the actual streams. - The music is missing from the output: verify input 1 contains audio and that the output maps the mixed label or music stream, such as
-map "[aout]"or-map 1:a:0. - The mix clips or sounds unbalanced: adjust source levels and weights, listen to the output, and retain normalization unless you have controlled the combined levels. Disabling normalization can cause heavy clipping.
- The video and audio stop or repeat at the wrong point: check that whole-file looping is placed before the correct input, or that the filter’s loop start, count or sample size matches the intended segment. Confirm timestamps and duration behavior.
- YouTube reports an unsupported or unhealthy stream: compare the actual codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, audio settings and ingestion protocol with YouTube’s current encoder guidance; test before going live and monitor the health indicators.
- The stream is interrupted despite a music license: contact the rights owner about channel allowlisting and confirm that the license covers live and archived use in the relevant territories.
