Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A UPS can keep your FFmpeg computer and the network equipment it needs powered during a mains outage—but only for the load and runtime it supports. Your stream also depends on an internet path that remains available. Plan and test those as two separate parts of the setup.
What has to stay online
The stream depends on a chain: power source → FFmpeg computer → router and modem/ONT → ISP network → YouTube ingest. A failure at any point can stop data reaching YouTube. A UPS covers local electrical power for connected devices; it does not guarantee that your ISP’s neighborhood equipment, network, or upstream route will keep working.
Put every device required for the stream on backup power—not just the PC. Depending on your connection, that may include a modem or ONT as well as the router, switches, and other essential network equipment.
Choose backup power for your actual load and outage window
- List the equipment that must remain on. Include the FFmpeg host and all network devices between it and the ISP connection.
- Check each device’s power requirement. Use the device label or manufacturer documentation to establish its draw, then estimate the combined load.
- Decide how long you need to ride through an outage. A short interruption and a prolonged cut are different requirements.
- Select a UPS rated for the supported load and required runtime. Runtime depends on the connected load and the UPS and battery configuration; there is no universal VA rating or runtime that fits every setup.
- Check switchover and recovery behavior. Confirm that the UPS can support the equipment through a mains changeover and that the host returns to service after its battery is depleted or power is restored. Test your own configuration rather than assuming it will recover.
A UPS for a streaming PC and router is a direct fit for local power continuity. It cannot keep the stream online if the internet connection fails independently.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Plan for internet outages separately
Ask your ISP how its service behaves during local power cuts, and identify which parts of your connection depend on powered equipment outside your home. If connectivity must survive an ISP or route failure, investigate a genuinely independent backup path and test failover. Two devices connected through the same router or dependent on the same ISP are not independent paths.
YouTube’s Live API documents separate primary and backup ingestion addresses, and a setup can transmit to the backup address at the same time as the primary. This is an optional way to add ingest-endpoint redundancy when your encoder setup sends to both; it is not backup power or backup internet, and it does not establish that an interrupted session will resume automatically. Set up and test the FFmpeg-to-YouTube connection
- Get the ingest details from YouTube Live Control Room. The encoder connects using a server/ingestion URL and a stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send to your stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Use an appropriate secure ingest connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS. FFmpeg documents RTMP variants, including RTMPS, but protocol support alone does not guarantee reconnection after an outage. FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation.
- Choose encoder settings for your video and connection. Follow YouTube’s current recommendations for codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval. Its settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum; choose the applicable bitrate range for your codec and output format on the live settings page rather than relying on a value that may not suit your stream. YouTube live encoder settings.
- Check upload capacity under realistic conditions. YouTube says: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test while other household or office traffic is representative, and leave enough capacity for a stable outbound stream.
- Start a test stream and watch stream health. Send representative motion and audio, then check Live Control Room health messages and confirm YouTube is receiving the feed before relying on the setup.
Make recovery after a host restart deliberate
If the UPS runs out or the host loses power, the computer must start again and the FFmpeg process must be launched again. A service manager or external supervisor can be configured to start the stream process after boot, but the right implementation depends on the operating system and your FFmpeg setup. Test it end to end; neither generic FFmpeg protocol support nor a UPS by itself proves that a process will restart or that YouTube will restore the same live session seamlessly.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after encoder transmission stops. Treat that as archive guidance, not a promise of seamless resumption or an archive guarantee for every duration. YouTube encoder and stream guidance.

Run a controlled outage drill
- Schedule the test when an interruption will not disrupt an important broadcast, and follow the UPS manufacturer’s safety guidance.
- With the stream running, safely remove mains input under supervision. Confirm that the computer and every required network device remain powered.
- Check Live Control Room to verify that YouTube continues receiving data, and monitor the encoder and network connection.
- Test the recovery path separately: confirm what happens when the UPS runtime is exceeded, the host restarts, and the FFmpeg process is relaunched.
- Restore mains power and verify that the UPS recharges and the equipment returns to its intended state.
This drill reveals whether your particular UPS, devices, ISP connection, and restart setup behave as expected. It is not a substitute for checking the limits of the equipment or connection.
Troubleshoot the failure point
| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The PC stays on, but the stream drops during a power cut | Network equipment or ISP path | Confirm the modem/ONT and router are on backup power. If they are, investigate whether the ISP service or upstream route failed; a local UPS cannot resolve that. |
| YouTube stops receiving data while the host is still running | Encoder or outbound connection | Check that FFmpeg is running, review CPU load, and test outbound internet and connection strength. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance separates encoder faults from outbound internet problems: Troubleshoot your live stream. |
| The host returns after power is restored, but there is no stream | Process startup | Check whether the host booted and whether your FFmpeg service or supervisor relaunched the process. Test the configured restart behavior; do not assume FFmpeg restarts itself after a host power loss. |
| RTMPS connection fails with an SSL error | Ingest URL or port configuration | Verify that the server name uses “rtmps” and check port 443 if there is an SSL error. See YouTube’s RTMPS connection guidance. |
| The backup ingest address does not take over | Encoder destination configuration | Confirm that your setup is transmitting to the backup address as well as the primary. A listed backup address is not proof that your encoder is sending to it. |
| The stream becomes unstable as other devices use the connection | Upload capacity | Retest upload speed under representative traffic and adjust the bitrate to suit the available connection, following YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. |
