Install YaPB in your Counter-Strike 1.6 game directory, configure either standalone loading or Metamod loading, start a map, and run yapb add from the server or client console. On Windows, the official installer handles the loader configuration; on Linux, you edit liblist.gam or Metamod’s plugins.ini yourself.

The important constraints are that YaPB’s published binary is 32-bit, the files must be inside the server’s cstrike directory, and the map needs YaPB waypoint or graph data for reliable navigation.

What you are installing
YaPB is an open-source computer-controlled player bot for Counter-Strike versions through 1.6. It supports both listen servers and dedicated HLDS servers, so the same bot project can be used for a locally hosted game or a server process that players join remotely.
A bot installation has two separate parts:
- The bot files: YaPB’s binary and supporting files must be placed in the correct game directory.
- A loader entry: the server must be told to load YaPB either directly as a standalone game DLL or through Metamod as a plugin.
After the map is running and a player slot is free, yapb add creates a bot. YaPB also includes commands for filling the server with a selected number of bots and for removing them later.

Check compatibility before installing
Use the Counter-Strike 1.6 game directory
For this guide, the game directory is cstrike. On a typical Linux Steam installation, that is:
/usr/Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life/cstrikeWindows users should select the directory that contains hl.exe or hlds.exe when the installer asks for a location. Do not select a parent Steam folder or a directory containing a different GoldSrc game.

YaPB’s official documentation says that only a 32-bit binary is available because Valve dropped support for 64-bit HLDS. A 64-bit operating system can still host the server, but the Half-Life dedicated-server process and the YaPB binary must be compatible with the 32-bit HLDS environment. A loader error on startup is often a sign that this requirement has not been met.
Confirm that the map can be waypointed
YaPB navigates using map waypoint or graph data. Standard Counter-Strike maps generally have the required data available, but a custom map may not. A bot can load successfully and still behave incorrectly, remain in one area, or fail to move if the map has no usable graph.
Choose standalone or Metamod loading
There are two supported installation architectures. Pick one before copying files; do not add both loader entries for the same YaPB installation.

When standalone is the better choice
Use standalone loading when the server does not already rely on Metamod. The documented Linux procedure changes the gamedll_linux value in liblist.gam so the game loads YaPB’s shared library directly. This is the shortest path for a clean server.

When to use Metamod
If AMX Mod X or other Metamod plugins are installed, YaPB’s guide recommends installing the bot as a Metamod plugin. Keeping all extensions in the same plugin-loading path makes the server easier to manage and avoids replacing the game DLL entry used by the existing stack.
Install YaPB on Windows
The Windows installer supports both listen servers and dedicated servers.
- Download the current Windows installer from YaPB’s official project release location. Use the release intended for Windows rather than the Linux TAR.XZ package.
- Run the installer. When it asks where to install, click Browse.
- Select the Half-Life directory that contains
hl.exeorhlds.exe. The installer needs the directory abovecstrike, not an unrelated game folder. - Click Install. The installer copies YaPB into the appropriate game files and chooses the loader configuration based on what it finds.
- Check the loader result. If Metamod is detected, the installer adds YaPB to
addons/metamod/plugins.ini. If Metamod is not detected, it patchesliblist.gamto loadyapb.dlldirectly. - Start the dedicated server and load a map. Do not test bot commands from a menu before the map has finished loading; YaPB needs the running game server and an available player slot.
Windows installation checks
- Look under the selected installation’s
cstrikedirectory for the YaPB files. - If Metamod was present, open
cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.iniand confirm that a YaPB entry was added. - If Metamod was absent, inspect
liblist.gamand confirm that the YaPB DLL is the configured game library. - Make sure the server is running the 32-bit HLDS environment supported by the published YaPB binary.
Install YaPB on Linux
The Linux instructions below assume the Counter-Strike directory is:
/usr/Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life/cstrikeUse the cstrike directory for Counter-Strike 1.6. The documentation uses a czero directory for Condition Zero, but that is a different game directory and is not the target of this guide.

- Stop the server before changing the game library configuration.
- Extract the YaPB TAR.XZ package into
cstrike. Extraction should create the YaPB files and theiraddons/yapbpath under the game directory. - Open
liblist.gamin thecstrikedirectory. - Find the existing Linux game-library line:
gamedll_linux "dlls/cs.so" - Replace it with the YaPB library path:
gamedll_linux "addons/yapb/bin/yapb.so" - Save the file and restart HLDS. A restart is required for the game to read the changed library entry.
Standalone loading means liblist.gam points directly to YaPB. If the path is misspelled or the files were extracted one directory too high or too low, the server will report a library-load problem and YaPB will not initialize.
Linux Metamod installation
- Stop the server.
- Extract the YaPB package into
cstrike. - Open Metamod’s plugin list:
cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.ini - Append this Linux plugin entry on its own line:
linux addons/yapb/bin/yapb.so - Save the file and restart HLDS.
Choose this route when Metamod is already the server’s extension layer. The plugin entry is relative to the game directory, so it should not begin with the full filesystem path.

Start the server and add bots
Load a map first
Start HLDS using your normal server configuration and load a Counter-Strike 1.6 map. Wait until the map is active and the server console is accepting commands. A bot cannot be added while the server is still starting or before the game DLL and YaPB have loaded.
Add one bot
When a player slot is available, run:
yapb addYou can enter the command in the dedicated-server console or, when your client has the required server access, in the in-game console. YaPB’s usage documentation supports choosing a nickname, difficulty, personality, team, and team class. The basic command lets YaPB use its defaults; use the project’s in-console usage information for the exact option syntax provided by the installed release rather than guessing parameter names.
Fill several slots
YaPB also provides a fill command for adding a chosen number of bots with selected settings:
yapb fillThe available release-specific options determine the count and bot settings. Check the command’s usage output on your server before supplying options, particularly if you are moving between YaPB releases. The server still needs enough open slots for the requested bots.
Remove or stop bots

These commands manage bots after YaPB has loaded; they do not repair an installation that failed to load.

Make sure custom maps have waypoint data
Loading a bot is not the same as giving it a navigable map. YaPB relies on waypoint or graph data that describes walkable routes, objectives, and connections. On a map with valid data, bots can select routes and play normally. On a custom map without usable data, they may stand still, bunch up, take nonsensical paths, or fail to reach parts of the level.

How to diagnose a map-data problem
- Test
yapb addon a standard map known to have YaPB graph data. - If the bot works there but not on the custom map, the loader and binary are probably functioning.
- Check whether the custom map has YaPB waypoint or graph files in the expected map-data location.
- If no usable graph exists, obtain compatible waypoint data or create it using YaPB’s waypointing tools and documentation.
Do not treat a bot that spawns but cannot navigate as proof that the installation is broken. Separate loader testing from map-coverage testing by first using a map with known graph data.
Verify the installation systematically
Use this checklist after every new installation or server move.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server reports a library-load error
First verify that the YaPB file exists at the exact path referenced by the loader. On Linux standalone installs, the expected path is addons/yapb/bin/yapb.so; on Linux Metamod installs, the same path appears in plugins.ini. On Windows, confirm that the installer selected the directory containing hl.exe or hlds.exe and that the resulting DLL is inside the Counter-Strike installation.

YaPB files exist, but no bot appears
- Confirm that the map has finished loading.
- Confirm that at least one player slot is available.
- Run
yapb addin the console that has access to the server. - Inspect the server console for a startup error before trying additional commands.
- Test on a map with known waypoint or graph data.
Metamod is installed, but YaPB does not start
Open cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.ini and check the entry character by character:
linux addons/yapb/bin/yapb.soMake sure the line is not commented out, the file is in the active cstrike directory, and the server was restarted after editing it. If you selected Metamod mode, do not also point liblist.gam directly at YaPB unless the project’s documentation for your exact setup explicitly requires it; duplicate loader paths can create conflicts.

The installer changed the wrong game
Windows installations can contain several GoldSrc directories. Re-run the installer and use Browse to select the directory containing the actual server executable used by your Counter-Strike 1.6 instance. Then verify the resulting files under that installation’s cstrike folder.
Bots spawn but do not navigate
This is usually a graph-data issue rather than a loader issue. Compare the behavior on a standard map. If only one custom map fails, install or create YaPB waypoint data for that map and test again.
Practical setup decisions
Clean Linux server
For a Linux server with no Metamod stack, extract YaPB into cstrike, change gamedll_linux in liblist.gam to addons/yapb/bin/yapb.so, restart HLDS, load a map, and run yapb add.
Linux server with AMX Mod X or other Metamod extensions
Extract the package into cstrike, append linux addons/yapb/bin/yapb.so to addons/metamod/plugins.ini, restart, and test the command after the map loads. This keeps YaPB with the rest of the Metamod-managed extensions.
Windows dedicated server
Run the Windows installer, select the directory containing hlds.exe, let the installer detect Metamod or configure standalone loading, restart the server, and test on a map with graph data.

Maintenance rules that prevent repeat problems
- Keep a copy of the working
liblist.gamorplugins.inibefore changing versions. - Record whether the server uses standalone or Metamod loading; future reinstalls must preserve that choice.
- After moving the server, re-check that YaPB is inside the active
cstrikedirectory rather than an old installation. - Test one known supported map after every change before diagnosing custom-map behavior.
- When changing YaPB releases, review the installed release’s command usage because optional arguments for bot name, difficulty, personality, team, and team class may differ in presentation.
