To connect Telegram to OpenClaw, create a bot with Telegram’s @BotFather, give OpenClaw the bot token, start the OpenClaw gateway, verify the channel, and approve the first direct-message pairing request. Group chats require an additional configuration step, and Telegram’s Privacy Mode determines which group messages the bot can see.

What you need before starting
Have these items ready:
- A Telegram account that can open a chat with @BotFather.
- An OpenClaw installation with access to its command-line interface.
- The Telegram bot token created by BotFather.
- A running OpenClaw gateway, either as a managed service or in the terminal.
- For group use, permission to add the bot and the Telegram user and chat IDs needed for the group configuration.
The token is a credential, not a display name or username. Treat it like a password: do not paste it into public chats, commit it to a repository, or include it in screenshots. OpenClaw needs the token to operate the Telegram bot through Telegram’s API.

- Open Telegram and find the account whose handle is exactly @BotFather.
- Send
/newbot. - Follow BotFather’s prompts for the bot’s name and username.
- Copy the token BotFather returns and store it securely. You will provide this value to OpenClaw in the next step.
Telegram’s official procedure also documents BotFather’s web app as an alternative to the in-app conversation. Whichever interface you use, the result is the same: a bot account and its token.
If you later see getMe returned 401 in OpenClaw, the token is the first thing to check. Re-copy it from BotFather or regenerate it there, then update the token source used by OpenClaw.

Configure OpenClaw with the bot token
There are two supported configuration styles: the OpenClaw channel command or the JSON5 configuration file. Use the command when you want a repeatable setup path; use the file when you need to express policies, groups, or multiple account settings explicitly.
Option 1: Add Telegram with the CLI
Run this command, replacing the value in angle brackets with the token you saved:

Option 2: Configure openclaw.json

}The sample token is only a format illustration. Replace it with the token issued for your bot. The example enables Telegram, requires pairing for direct messages, and requires a mention in groups matched by the wildcard group rule.
TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN is an environment fallback for the default account only. If you operate named accounts, the OpenClaw documentation specifies botToken or tokenFile for those accounts. Do not assume that setting the environment variable will configure every named account.

Telegram does not use openclaw channels login telegram. The connection is established through channel configuration and a running gateway, not through that login command.
CLI or JSON5: which should you use?

Start the OpenClaw gateway and verify the channel
OpenClaw must have a running gateway before the bot can receive or send messages.
Run it as a managed service
For a managed gateway service, use:
openclaw gateway startThis model is suited to a host where the bot should remain available after you close your terminal.
Run it in the current terminal
For a foreground process, use:
openclaw gatewayKeep that terminal process running while you test the bot. Closing the terminal stops the foreground gateway.

Probe the Telegram channel
After starting the gateway, run:
openclaw channels status --probeThe probe checks the configured channel rather than merely showing that a configuration file exists. If you change channel settings while the gateway is running, hot reload normally applies the change. Restart the gateway when the change affects the service’s environment, such as an environment variable supplied to a managed service.
Approve the first direct-message pairing
With the gateway running, open the new bot’s Telegram chat and send any message. When dmPolicy is set to pairing, that first message creates a pending authorization request rather than immediately granting access.

- Send a message to the bot in Telegram.
- List pending Telegram pairing requests:
openclaw pairing list telegram- Find the code displayed for your request and approve it:
openclaw pairing approve telegram <CODE>Replace <CODE> with the displayed pairing code. Pairing codes expire after one hour. If the code has expired, send another message to create a new request, list the requests again, and approve the current code.
This pairing step is the authorization boundary for the initial direct message. If /start appears to produce no usable reply flow, inspect the pairing list before changing anything else. A pending request still needs approval; alternatively, you can deliberately choose a different direct-message policy if that matches your access requirements.
Add the bot to a Telegram group
Group operation has two separate layers: OpenClaw’s group configuration and Telegram’s own message-visibility rules. Complete both.
Add the bot and collect the required IDs
- Add the bot account to the Telegram group.
- Obtain the Telegram user ID and the group chat ID required by your access rules.
- Place the group ID under
channels.telegram.groupsin the OpenClaw configuration.
Supergroups commonly have negative chat IDs beginning with -100. Those IDs belong under the groups map; they do not belong in groupAllowFrom.
Configure group matching and mentions
A minimal wildcard rule can require a mention before OpenClaw responds:

}Use the actual group ID when you need a rule for one specific group. Keep the group map and any user access controls conceptually separate: the negative supergroup ID is a group key, not a value to move into groupAllowFrom.

Understand Telegram Privacy Mode
Telegram bots default to Privacy Mode. In that mode, the bot may not receive every message posted in a group. To let it receive all group messages, disable Privacy Mode with /setprivacy in BotFather, or make the bot a group administrator.
After changing Privacy Mode, remove the bot from each affected group and add it again. Without that remove-and-re-add step, the new visibility setting may not take effect for an existing group membership.
If the bot is online but the group remains silent, check these conditions together:

- The message mentions the bot when
requireMentionis enabled. - The bot has the required group membership or administrator status.
- Telegram Privacy Mode is not hiding the message.
- The group’s chat ID is under
channels.telegram.groups, especially when it is a negative ID beginning with-100.

Troubleshoot a bot that does not reply
getMe returned 401
A 401 from Telegram’s getMe call indicates a token-source problem. Check for a copying error, an outdated token, or a mismatch between the account you configured and the account you intended to run.
- Return to BotFather and re-copy the token, or regenerate it if necessary.
- Update the configured
botToken, the configuredtokenFile, orTELEGRAM_BOT_TOKENwhen you are using the default account. - Restart the gateway if the token came from a service environment; otherwise allow the normal configuration reload or restart the gateway to remove ambiguity.
- Run
openclaw channels status --probeagain.
The bot is online, but the group is silent
Start with visibility and mention rules rather than changing the token. If the group rule has requireMention: true, send a message that explicitly mentions the bot. Then check Telegram Privacy Mode, administrator status, group membership, and the placement of the group ID under the groups map.
/start does not produce a usable reply flow
When direct messages use pairing, /start does not bypass authorization. Run:

openclaw pairing approve telegram <CODE>Remember that pairing codes expire after one hour. If there is no current request, send another message to the bot and list the requests again. Change the DM policy only when you intentionally want a different access model.
Polling stalls or reconnects slowly
Follow the OpenClaw logs while reproducing the problem. Investigate the network path to api.telegram.org, including proxy settings, DNS resolution, IPv6 behavior, and general connectivity. A slow or unavailable network path can prevent polling from receiving updates even when the token and channel configuration are correct.
A command-menu update is rejected
Inspect the logs for BOT_COMMANDS_TOO_MUCH. That error means the Telegram command set is too large. Reduce custom or plugin Telegram commands, then allow the gateway to reload the reduced set.
Run a complete verification pass
Use this order when testing a new installation or diagnosing a change:
- Confirm the bot was created by the genuine @BotFather account and that the saved token is current.
- Confirm Telegram is enabled in OpenClaw and that the token is supplied through the correct source for the account.
- Start the gateway with either
openclaw gateway startoropenclaw gateway. - Run
openclaw channels status --probe. - Send a direct message to the bot.
- List and approve the pending pairing request when the DM policy is
pairing. - For groups, verify the group map, the group ID format, mention requirements, Privacy Mode, and bot membership.
- If updates remain delayed, inspect connectivity and OpenClaw logs rather than repeatedly changing the token.
The OpenClaw procedure can be summarized as: “Create the bot in BotFather, give OpenClaw its token, approve the first DM, and add the bot to a group.” The practical detail is that each phrase represents a separate control: credential configuration, gateway availability, direct-message authorization, and group visibility.
