Make changes inside the game’s existing input, update, collision, and audio flow rather than rebuilding the project. First identify whether the generated game uses Phaser, plain JavaScript with Canvas, or another engine; then wire controls to player state, award points only on defined gameplay events, and trigger audio from those same events. The examples below use Phaser where its APIs are relevant and explain the equivalent approach for a Canvas game.
Inspect the generated game before editing it
Run the game once, then inspect its HTML and JavaScript entry points. Find how the engine is initialized, where scenes or states are defined, how the player is represented, and where the update loop, collision callbacks, score display, and audio are handled. Keep the working structure and dependencies that the generated project already uses.
If the project uses Phaser, identify its installed version and use the matching documentation: Phaser provides versioned references for browser games written in JavaScript or TypeScript. Start with the Phaser documentation and the reference for the version in the project, rather than copying an example written for a different major version.
For a small Canvas game without a framework, the same basic mechanics can be implemented with browser event listeners and the game’s existing animation loop. MDN’s pure JavaScript Breakout tutorial and its Phaser version illustrate the two paths.

How do I add keyboard controls to my browser game?
For Phaser, create key objects once when the scene is set up, then read their state during update(). Phaser’s createCursorKeys() helper supplies arrow keys; addKeys("W,A,S,D") can bind a WASD set. In the update loop, use each key’s isDown state to change the player’s velocity or position.
create() {
this.cursors = this.input.keyboard.createCursorKeys();
this.wasd = this.input.keyboard.addKeys("W,A,S,D");
}
update() {
if (this.cursors.left.isDown || this.wasd.A.isDown) {
// Apply leftward movement using the game's existing movement model.
}
if (this.cursors.right.isDown || this.wasd.D.isDown) {
// Apply rightward movement.
}
}
The comments are intentional: use the movement method already established by the generated game, such as setting a physics velocity or changing a position, rather than mixing incompatible movement systems. Use key-down events for one-time actions such as starting or pausing; checking isDown every frame is for actions that should continue while held.
Canvas and other engines
In plain JavaScript, attach keyboard listeners and maintain an input-state object. For example, a keydown listener can set keys[event.code] = true and a keyup listener can set it back to false. The existing update loop reads that state and changes the player. This keeps event handling separate from movement logic and avoids creating a second animation loop.

If pressing a game key scrolls the page, prevent the browser’s default action for that key while the game is active, without disabling ordinary page navigation outside the game. Test simultaneous inputs too: decide whether opposite directions cancel, or whether one should take priority.
Make mouse and touch actions reachable
Phaser uses a unified pointer input model for mouse and touch. An interactive game object must have input enabled before it emits pointer events; buttons commonly use setInteractive() and then listen for events such as pointerdown. For continuous pointer movement, read the active pointer’s position or state in the update loop.
startButton.setInteractive();
startButton.on("pointerdown", () => {
// Start the game or unlock audio from this user interaction.
});
A single pointer-based button can serve mouse and touch, but that does not make every game playable on a phone. Ensure essential actions can be completed without a physical keyboard or mouse, and test the actual touch experience. MDN’s guide to game control mechanisms covers touch, desktop keyboard and mouse, and gamepad options; choose based on the devices your players will use.

How do I add a score counter?
Decide what earns points, whether the event can happen more than once, and when a new game resets the score. Change the score in the collision, collection, or other gameplay-event handler—not in the render or update loop simply because another frame passed.
- Initialize the score when a new game begins.
- In the handler for a valid scoring event, add the intended points.
- Update the visible score text after the value changes.
- Test a scoring event and a similar event that should not award points.
For example, when a player collects an item, update the score and the score display in that collection handler. If overlap can trigger the handler repeatedly, guard against repeat awards or remove or disable the collectible after it scores. MDN’s Phaser Breakout tutorial treats score tracking and winning as explicit game mechanics alongside lives and game-over behavior; it is a useful model for connecting score to a meaningful event rather than to elapsed frames.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLoad sound and trigger it at the right moment
Load sound assets before using them, then trigger effects from the gameplay events they represent: a collection sound when an item is collected, a hit sound on a hit, or a win sound when the game enters its win state. Phaser’s Sound Manager uses Web Audio when supported and falls back to the HTML Audio Tag. Most browsers require a player click or tap before game audio can play, so connect the initial start interaction to beginning or unlocking audio and handle the locked state cleanly.

Keep effects short and tied to meaningful changes. Sound should reinforce feedback, not replace it: retain a visible score change or other visual response so the game remains legible when muted. Add a mute or sound toggle, and stop any looping audio when the game changes scenes or restarts. See Phaser’s audio documentation for its sound behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the game’s lifecycle instead of fighting it
In Phaser, organize the work around the scene lifecycle: load assets in preload(), create the world and input bindings in create(), and process input and game state in update(). Keep collision handlers responsible for event-driven changes such as scoring or playing a hit effect. Phaser Studio’s July 2026 beginner tutorial presents this lifecycle as a core workflow; its creator Scott Westover summarizes the teaching point as: “if you understand preload, create, and update, you already understand the core of Phaser.”
For Canvas or another engine, use the equivalent existing asset-loading, setup, update, and event-handler structure. Avoid adding a parallel loop or duplicating controls in a second system. If the generated game already uses Phaser, keep its current framework and version; if it is a small framework-free Canvas game, direct JavaScript may be simpler to maintain. The choice depends on the existing dependencies, target input devices, need for built-in asset and sound handling, and comfort maintaining framework-specific code.

- Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
- Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
- Rumble vibration.
- Support turbo function.
Test the complete play loop
Check controls, scoring, and sound together, not just as isolated code snippets. A reliable manual pass includes:
- Keyboard: each intended key works, simultaneous directions behave as intended, and game controls do not make the page scroll unexpectedly.
- Pointer: buttons respond to clicks and have input enabled.
- Touch: essential actions can be performed without a keyboard or mouse.
- Scoring: points change once per valid event and reset at the intended time.
- Audio: a first click or tap permits playback, the correct events trigger effects, mute works, and loops stop on restart or scene change.
- Game flow: start, play, win or lose, and restart leave controls, score, and sound in sensible states.
If an interaction fails, trace it from the input binding or collision event to the state change and then to the visible or audible feedback. That shows whether the problem is input setup, event logic, or presentation without requiring a wholesale rewrite.
