Start with the exact game’s compatibility report for your emulator build, then check that your PC meets that emulator’s documented requirements. If the game is unsupported or has a major emulation issue, changing graphics settings may not make it run faster or correctly. For performance problems you can investigate, establish a repeatable baseline and change one documented setting at a time.
Check whether the game works in your emulator
Compatibility belongs to a particular emulator project and can change between builds. Check the project’s current game status before tuning performance, and distinguish reaching a menu from reaching gameplay, being playable, or completing a game. SharpEmu describes itself as experimental and uses the labels Nothing, Boots, Menus, Ingame, Playable, and Not tested. Its live page showed 76 of 9,176 tracked titles tested and 36 reaching gameplay when accessed in 2026; these are changing page counts, not a success rate or a promise that a tested title is playable. KytyPS5 also cautions that compatibility, stability, and performance can vary between versions; Windows and Linux are its primary testing platforms, while macOS is experimental. Check the emulator’s PC requirements
Requirements vary by project, so use the chosen emulator’s own documentation rather than a generic PS5-emulation spec list. KytyPS5 lists Windows 10 version 1803 or a current Linux distribution, a 64-bit x86 processor (or Apple Silicon with Rosetta 2 on its experimental macOS path), and a GPU capable of Vulkan 1.3 with current drivers. These requirements are specific to KytyPS5, not a universal specification for every emulator. If your GPU or driver cannot meet the selected project’s requirement, compatible graphics hardware may be necessary; the documented requirement does not show that buying a faster card will increase frame rate or solve title incompatibility.
Build a repeatable performance baseline
Before adjusting anything, record the information that makes a comparison meaningful:

- Emulator build and game version, if available.
- Operating system and graphics driver.
- Output resolution and in-game settings.
- A repeatable location or scene, plus a defined measurement interval if the emulator exposes frame rate.
- Whether the game reaches a menu, gameplay, or sustained playable completion, and any visual errors or crashes.
Compare runs in the same scene and avoid treating a cold run, a different location, or a different build as a controlled comparison. PS5PCEM’s October 3, 2026 status entry for Grand Theft Auto III: The Definitive Edition illustrates why context matters: it reports 8.10 and 8.97 FPS in two 30-second opening-position samples, 7.20 FPS seated in a car, and 3.57 FPS in a wider city view. Those are observations for that title, scene, build, and configuration—not a general benchmark or a minimum frame rate. The project specifically says its approximately 8.5 FPS combined opening-position figure is not an 8 FPS minimum across gameplay. Its Subnautica: Below Zero entry reports 12.70 and 8.50 FPS across two 30-second stationary samples (10.60 FPS combined), notes run-to-run variability, and does not claim that the repeat proves longer stalls are fixed. Which settings should you change for better emulator performance?
There is no supported universal preset for PS5 emulation. Start with the selected emulator’s documented defaults and guidance. Change one setting at a time, then repeat the same scene and interval. Keep a change only if it gives a repeatable improvement without introducing visual errors, instability, or crashes; otherwise revert it.

Do not assume that raising or lowering resolution, changing thread counts, or enabling experimental options is a general fix. PS5PCEM documents cases where targeted changes reduce particular CPU, transfer, shader, or pipeline work, yet measured game performance stays low or does not show a repeatable gain. That is why a setting change needs to be assessed for the game and build in question, rather than treated as a general emulator optimization.
Why is my PS5 emulator running slowly?
A slow frame rate can reflect incomplete emulation rather than a PC setting. If the game fails to boot, renders incorrectly, or remains slow despite meeting the emulator’s stated requirements, check the project’s compatibility notes and open issues. CPU, GPU, shader, synchronization, firmware, or game-specific support may be incomplete; the projects describe experimental development and variation by title and version.

The available project observations do not establish a controlled, cross-title comparison showing which PC component to upgrade first. Do not assume a new CPU, GPU, more memory, or faster storage is the universal solution. First determine whether the game and emulator build can produce the result you want; then use a controlled comparison to identify a measurable host-system bottleneck.

- Visual correctness, stability, and crashes.

A brief peak, one scene, or a developer diagnostic can help describe a specific run, but it does not establish stable performance across a full game.
