Install a modpack with the CurseForge app

Install and open the CurseForge app, then select Minecraft. CurseForge supports Minecraft Java Edition. Its support page lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 12 and higher, and Linux on official Ubuntu distributions; check the current CurseForge download page for up-to-date platform availability.

In the Minecraft area of the app, open Browse or Discover, then choose Modpacks. Use the available filters to find a pack for the Minecraft version and modloader you want.

Choose a pack and select Install. When installation finishes, the pack appears in My Modpacks.

Open My Modpacks, select the profile, and click Play. These steps follow CurseForge Support’s installation instructions.
If you start on a modpack’s CurseForge website page instead, click Install, then Open when prompted. The CurseForge app opens and begins installing the pack.

Choose whether Minecraft Launcher opens
CurseForge offers two launch routes: it can use a Minecraft launcher, or it can skip that launcher and start the pack through CurseForge. CurseForge Support’s “Minecraft – Getting Started” article, modified December 4, 2025, describes both options.

To change the route, open CurseForge’s settings for Minecraft and select the preferred launcher option. The exact setting location or wording may vary by app version; use CurseForge Support’s Minecraft – Getting Started guide for the current steps.

Import a modpack someone shared with you
Use the app’s Import option to add a shared profile instead of browsing for a pack. CurseForge accepts an exported profile ZIP or a profile code.
- ZIP: Select the exported profile ZIP. It must use CurseForge’s export structure; ZIP imports are for modpacks or custom profiles, not individual mods, worlds, or datapacks.
- Profile code: Enter the code provided by the pack’s creator. A code remains valid for seven days.

Handle non-CurseForge file warnings carefully
A manually shared pack may include files that are not hosted on CurseForge. CurseForge warns that manually shared packs can be manipulated and are outside its moderation pipeline. The app offers CurseForge Files Only, which installs only files hosted on CurseForge, or an option to continue with all flagged files after acknowledging the warning. If you are unsure whether you trust the person or source that shared the pack, choose CurseForge Files Only. See CurseForge’s guidance on manually shared modpacks.

A pack and the mods added to it must match the relevant Minecraft version and modloader. CurseForge supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla. Check the profile’s version and loader, then use a mod’s listed compatibility details before adding it. CurseForge explains that incompatible versions or loaders prevent a profile from being selected for that mod in its modloader compatibility guide.

Fix common installation and launch problems
The pack will not launch

In CurseForge, repair the installation and try launching the profile again, following CurseForge’s failed-to-launch guidance.

If you selected Use CurseForge launcher, change the launcher setting to a Minecraft launcher and test again. A different launch route can help identify whether the issue is tied to the selected launcher.

If the problem continues, collect the logs and contact CurseForge Support using the instructions in its launch troubleshooting guide.
The app reports a permission error
Set the modding folder to a location where your account has both read and write access, then retry. CurseForge identifies folder permissions as a possible cause in its Minecraft troubleshooting guidance.
