To add a custom map to a Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server, install or update the server with SteamCMD, copy the map’s numeric Steam Workshop ID, and add +host_workshop_map MAP_ID to the server’s startup command. For a rotating pool, use +host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID instead. Start the server, watch its console for download and loading errors, then join from a client to confirm that the map loads and the required Workshop content reaches players.

Workshop distribution is normally the simplest approach because clients can obtain the map through Steam. Manual file installation remains useful when Workshop hosting fails or when you need direct control over the server files, but it requires every map resource to be placed in the correct directory.

What you need before installing a custom map
Have these items ready before changing the launch command:
- A working CS2 dedicated-server installation with permission to update its files and edit its startup script, service, panel, or command line.
- SteamCMD, Valve’s current tool for downloading and updating dedicated servers. The older HLDSUpdateTool is retired and no longer works. Follow Steam Support’s current dedicated-server guidance at SteamCMD dedicated-server instructions.
- The numeric Workshop item ID for a single map, or the numeric ID of a Workshop collection.
- Access to the server console and a CS2 client that can connect to the server.
- A backup of the existing startup command and map-cycle configuration, so you can restore a known-good launch if the new map fails.
Keep the server’s normal authentication, networking, and other launch options. The Workshop argument is added to the existing command; it does not replace the command or any host-required settings.

Workshop map or manual files: which method should you use?
Use Workshop hosting first unless you have a specific reason to manage the files yourself. Valve documents the Maps Workshop as a distribution route for server operators, and connected clients can obtain Workshop maps in the supported flow. Manual installation gives you more direct control but makes path and dependency errors your responsibility.
| Consideration | Workshop distribution | Manual installation |
|---|---|---|
| Client distribution | Clients can download the Workshop content when the server uses the supported Workshop flow. | You must ensure the server has all files and that clients can obtain whatever content the map requires. |
| Updates | Steam Workshop IDs provide a maintained distribution point; still retest after CS2 or map updates. | You must download new files, replace old versions, and preserve the required directory structure. |
| Dependencies | Workshop content is referenced by its item ID, reducing manual copying. | Missing sounds, models, textures, sprites, or other resources can prevent loading or produce in-game errors. |
| Map-pool management | A collection can represent a repeatable pool with one collection ID. | You manage every map and its map-cycle entries on the server. |
| Reproducibility | Operators can record the map or collection ID used by the launch configuration. | Reproduction depends on keeping an accurate copy of the files and folder layout. |
| Troubleshooting visibility | Console output usually identifies an incorrect ID, download problem, or load failure. | Path mistakes and incomplete extraction are common and can be harder to spot. |
Current community server documentation describes Workshop as the preferred CS2 distribution route and reports that FastDL is not available. Treat that as operational guidance that can change with game updates, rather than a permanent Valve guarantee; the current reference is CS2KZ LAN/server documentation.

1. Install or update the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Use SteamCMD to install the CS2 dedicated-server files or update an existing installation before adding the map. Steam Support identifies SteamCMD as the current tool and notes that the former HLDSUpdateTool has been retired. The exact SteamCMD executable path, operating-system service setup, and account requirements vary by host, so keep those details in your provider’s startup procedure while following Valve’s guidance at Steam Support.
After an update, confirm that the server executable starts normally without the custom-map argument. This separates a base server installation problem from a Workshop configuration problem.
2. Find the map’s numeric Workshop ID
Open the map’s Steam Workshop page and copy its numeric item ID from the page URL or Workshop details. Use the number, not the map’s display name, title, or a pasted web address. Check that the item is the actual playable map and not a screenshot, dependency, outdated version, or unrelated asset.
Record the ID in your server notes. A clear record is useful when you rebuild the server, move hosts, or investigate a later update.
3. Add the map launch parameter
Append the following argument to the existing CS2 dedicated-server startup command:
Rank #2
+host_workshop_map MAP_ID
Replace MAP_ID with the map’s numeric Workshop ID. Do not remove the normal dedicated-server flags or the authentication settings required by your host. In a panel, place the argument in the panel’s additional launch-options field; in a service or shell script, place it in the same command that launches the server.
For example, the relevant end of a command might look like this:
... +host_workshop_map 123456789
The number above is only a format example. Use the ID of your own Workshop item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Start the server and read the console
Launch the server and remain connected to its console while it initializes. Look for messages indicating that the Workshop item is being downloaded and that the map is being loaded. An immediate error usually points to a misspelled parameter, an invalid ID, unavailable Workshop content, or an installation/update problem.
Do not assume that a process reaching an “online” state means the map is usable. Wait for the Workshop download and map-load stages to complete, then test with a client.
5. Join from a client
Connect to the server from a CS2 client. Confirm that the intended map opens, that the client receives the associated Workshop content, and that the match can begin. Valve’s Workshop FAQ explains that, in the supported local-server flow, friends’ game clients can download the map automatically and play together: Counter-Strike Workshop FAQ.
Test with at least one additional player when possible. A map that loads for the operator but fails for another client may indicate incomplete distribution, a client-side download problem, or a network configuration issue.

Method 2: use a Workshop collection as the map pool
1. Create or select a collection
Use a Workshop collection when the server should expose several maps or when you want a maintained pool represented by one ID. Add the intended maps to the collection and verify that the collection is public and available to the account or server workflow that will use it. Remove obsolete or test items before putting the collection into production.
2. Copy the collection ID
Copy the collection’s numeric ID, not an individual map ID. Keep a written list of the maps currently in the collection so an unexpected collection change can be diagnosed later.
3. Add the collection parameter
Append this argument to the existing startup command:
+host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID
Replace COLLECTION_ID with the numeric collection ID:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →... +host_workshop_collection 987654321
Do not use both forms as a substitute for a clear design. Use the single-map form when one Workshop item is the target; use the collection form when the collection itself is the maintained distribution unit.
4. Verify every intended map
Start the server and inspect the console for collection download and map-load messages. Join the server and test more than the first map if the collection is intended to be a rotation. A collection can be publicly visible yet still contain an unintended item, an unavailable map, or a map that has been removed or changed by its author.
Map rotation and cycle settings
A Workshop collection determines which Workshop content is available, but your server’s map-cycle configuration still controls how maps are selected and rotated. Configure the cycle using the server’s normal map-selection and map-cycle settings, then test the transition between maps. Valve’s dedicated-server support documentation describes map selection and map-cycle controls at Steam’s map-cycle guidance.

- For one fixed custom map, use
+host_workshop_mapand confirm that the server starts on the intended map. - For a maintained pool, use
+host_workshop_collectionand keep the collection contents aligned with the map-cycle configuration. - After changing the collection or cycle, restart the server and test a complete map change rather than testing only initial startup.
- Keep a dated record of the collection ID and the maps it contained when you last tested it.
Manual installation fallback
Use manual installation when Workshop distribution cannot be used or when you have a map package that must be deployed directly. Valve’s dedicated-server support guidance says custom maps belong in the server directory and that associated resource folders may also need to be copied. Depending on the map, those folders can include maps, sound, sprites, gfx, overviews, and models. The map author’s readme can require additional locations or special setup. See Valve’s custom-map installation guidance.
1. Obtain the complete map package
Download the package from the map author’s stated source and read its documentation before extracting anything. Do not assume that a single map file is the whole installation; custom content often depends on matching sounds, models, textures, sprites, or overview files.
2. Preserve the package’s folder structure
Extract each folder into the corresponding server game directory. A common failure is an extra directory level created by the archive, such as placing files in game/cs2/cs2/maps/maps instead of the server’s actual maps directory. Steam warns that incorrect extraction paths are a frequent reason custom maps fail to load; its troubleshooting guidance is at Steam’s map-loading FAQ.
3. Follow map-specific instructions
If the readme names a required folder, configuration file, dependency, or launch option, follow it exactly. Do not delete apparently unused files until the map has been tested; an asset that seems unrelated may be required for a model, sound, or scripted element.

4. Restart and test
Restart the dedicated server after extraction, watch the console, and connect from a client. Test the map in an ordinary round and inspect representative areas for missing textures, sounds, models, or visual effects. Manual installation does not automatically solve client distribution; verify that every player can obtain the content needed by the server.

The server starts but the map does not load
- Recheck the numeric Workshop ID or collection ID. A title copied from the Workshop page is not a valid substitute.
- Check the spelling and placement of
+host_workshop_mapor+host_workshop_collection. - Read the full server console output for download, permission, or map-load errors.
- Confirm that SteamCMD completed the server update and that the base server launches without the custom-map option.
- For manual files, verify the extraction path and compare every required folder with the map author’s readme.
Players cannot join
First confirm that the server finished downloading and loading the map. Then verify that the connecting client is receiving the same Workshop item or has the required manual content. If the map is ready but the connection still fails, check network reachability and the server’s configured port. A map problem and a basic connectivity problem can produce similar symptoms, so test with a known-good standard map to separate them.
Textures, sounds, or models are missing
For manual installations, compare the package contents with the server folders named in the readme. Missing resources commonly mean that only the map file was copied or that an archive created an extra nested directory. Re-extract the complete package into the matching folders and restart the server. Valve’s guidance lists resource folders such as sound, sprites, gfx, overviews, and models; consult the dedicated-server map instructions.

The collection behaves unexpectedly
- Confirm that the collection ID, rather than a map ID, is in the launch argument.
- Check that the collection is public and available to the server’s Workshop workflow.
- Review the collection contents for removed, private, duplicate, or unintended maps.
- Restart after editing the collection and test more than the first map in the pool.
The problem appeared after a CS2 update
Revalidate or update the server files with SteamCMD, then retest the startup command and the map itself. CS2 server behavior and Workshop handling can change with game updates. If a previously working map fails after the update, check the author’s current notes and remove stale manual files before trying a clean deployment.
Keeping a custom-map server maintainable
- Store the exact launch command, map or collection ID, map-cycle settings, and the date of the last successful test.
- Keep Workshop IDs and manual map packages separate in your notes so an operator does not accidentally combine incompatible deployment methods.
- Before scheduled play, start the server early enough to observe Workshop downloads and resolve failures without delaying players.
- After changing a collection, test initial startup, a map transition, and a second client connection.
- After every CS2 server update, validate the installation and revisit custom-map behavior rather than assuming the old configuration remains valid.
- Never publish a real authentication token in a guide, script shared with others, or public support request.
Why Valve supports Workshop maps on servers
Valve explicitly encourages server operators to use the Maps Workshop. Its Workshop FAQ says, “Yes, you can – we actually think the Workshop will be great for server operators.” The same FAQ explains that friends’ clients can download a map automatically in the supported local-server flow. Valve also announced that community map makers can upload maps to Workshop and that community servers can host those maps. Read the current FAQ at counter-strike.net/workshop/workshopfaq.
That support does not remove the need to monitor the server. IDs can be wrong, collections can change, map authors can update or withdraw items, and CS2 updates can alter server behavior. Treat the launch command, console output, and client test as one verification process.
Recommended deployment decision
- Choose Workshop for a normal single custom map or a collection-based rotation.
- Use
+host_workshop_map MAP_IDfor one map and+host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_IDfor a maintained pool. - Verify the server console, then connect from a client and test the actual map.
- Use manual installation only when Workshop distribution is unavailable or direct file control is necessary.
- After updates or collection changes, validate the server again before players rely on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a map name instead of a Workshop ID?
No. The Workshop launch parameters use the item’s numeric ID. Use the map title only to identify the page, then copy the number for +host_workshop_map.
Should I use a collection for just one map?
You can, but a single map is clearer with +host_workshop_map. Use a collection when you need a maintained pool or want one ID to represent several maps.

Is FastDL required for CS2 custom maps?
Current CS2 community server documentation reports that FastDL is not available and recommends Workshop distribution. This is operational guidance rather than a permanent Valve guarantee, so recheck behavior after major updates.
What should I do if Workshop hosting fails?
Read the map author’s instructions and install the complete package manually in the server’s matching folders, including any required sound, models, sprites, gfx, or overviews content. Then restart and test from a client.
