What a servant does in V Rising
A servant is a subdued NPC turned into a permanent castle worker. Once converted, it can stand guard inside your castle and be dispatched from a Castle Throne to bring back mission loot. Servants are not simply stronger versions of ordinary enemies: their usefulness comes from a combination of blood-derived expertise, gear level, blood-type advantages and faction bonuses.

Only humans and some draculin can become servants. An eligible NPC must have an active blood type when you select it with Dominate. Creatures without a usable blood type cannot be converted, even if they are otherwise humanoid.
You need two progression milestones before the system works:
#1 Best Overall
- Awaken as a Vampire. Hunt for blood in nearby settlements to regain your strength and evade the scorching sun to survive.
- Raise your castle and thrive in an ever-changing, open world full of mystery. Gain allies online and conquer the land of the living.
- Servants quest: unlocks the Dominate power used to subdue a target.
- Army of Darkness: unlocks the Castle Throne used to assign hunts.
A Servant Coffin is required for the conversion itself. A Castle Throne is not needed to create your first servant, but it is required for sending servants to discovered hunt destinations.
How to convert an NPC into a servant
The conversion is a field operation followed by a timed castle process. Plan an escape route before activating Dominate: the target can still attack during the channel, and the subdued NPC remains vulnerable while following you.
- Find an eligible target. Look for a human or valid draculin with an active blood type. Do not start the process on an NPC you cannot safely escort back to your castle.
- Activate Dominate. Select the Dominate power and begin the channel on the target. The channel does not make you invulnerable; the NPC may continue attacking while it runs.
- Lower the target below roughly 30% health. Dominate will not complete until the NPC is sufficiently weakened. Stop dealing damage once the health threshold is reached so you do not kill the target.
- Finish the channel. A successful channel makes the NPC subdued and neutral. It follows you, but enemy attacks and environmental damage can still kill it.
- Escort it to your castle. Waygates cannot be used while a target is subdued, so travel by ordinary routes. If the trip is unsafe, a Dusk Caller consumable can move a dominated target to an empty Prison Cell instead.
- Start conversion at a Servant Coffin. Interact with an available coffin, select the conversion option and pay 100 Blood Essence.
- Wait for the timer. Conversion takes 20 minutes of real time. Crypt Flooring in the coffin area reduces that time to 10 minutes.
- Summon and equip the finished servant. When the timer ends, use the coffin to summon the servant, then equip it with suitable gear before assigning work or expecting it to fight.
The conversion cost and timers are in-game values documented by the VRising Wiki (page crawled in 2026). They are not a one-time promotional allowance, but a future patch could change them.
How blood quality becomes servant expertise
Under the current servant system, the captured NPC’s blood quality is converted into expertise. Expertise improves the servant’s maximum health, physical power, hunt proficiency and loot performance. After Update 1.1, the cited mechanics reference describes expertise as half of the blood-quality percentage.
| Blood quality on capture | Resulting expertise under the cited Update 1.1 formula | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 20% | 10 expertise | Lower baseline for health, combat and hunts |
| 50% | 25 expertise | Middle-quality option when the NPC is convenient to capture |
| 100% | 50 expertise | Highest result under the documented half-percentage conversion |
The formula is a conversion rule, not a guarantee that every servant with the same expertise will perform identically. Gear level, destination suitability, blood-type perks and faction perks still affect the practical result. If you are choosing between two equally accessible NPCs, the higher blood quality is the better long-term investment; if one target is extremely dangerous to escort, a safer lower-quality capture may be more sensible than losing both.
Choosing a target before you spend Blood Essence
Check blood quality and type
Blood quality determines the servant’s expertise, while the blood type supplies environmental advantages for hunts. Inspect both before committing to a conversion. A high-quality NPC with a blood type that does not suit any destination in your current map is not automatically better than a slightly lower-quality NPC whose type matches your next series of missions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLook at the faction
Faction perks increase loot when a servant works in its home region. This makes faction alignment a planning factor rather than a cosmetic label. Keep more than one type of servant when possible: blood-type perks do not stack, so a varied roster gives you more ways to reduce difficulty across different environments.

Do not sacrifice a useful prisoner accidentally
A dominated NPC can be taken to a Prison Cell rather than a Servant Coffin. Before beginning conversion, decide whether you need a worker or a renewable blood source. That choice is reversible only by capturing another NPC, so do not convert a rare high-quality target while your immediate need is maintaining a particular blood supply.
Gear: what actually improves a servant
Gear level is the important equipment number. It raises hunt proficiency by 10 times the gear level and improves combat statistics, so it directly affects both mission performance and castle defense. Equip the highest practical gear level you can provide rather than spending time optimizing ordinary item affixes.
Secondary equipment statistics do not affect servant performance. Set bonuses and durability also do not contribute to servant hunt or combat results. This means a higher-level item with unhelpful secondary stats is still preferable to a lower-level item with attractive bonuses when the item is being worn by a servant.
- Prioritize: total gear level and enough equipment to make the servant viable in the intended region.
- Do not prioritize for servant calculations: secondary stats, set bonuses or item durability.
- Re-evaluate after upgrades: replacing a servant’s equipment with a higher-level set can improve its mission profile even when the new pieces have worse personal-player bonuses.
Building and using the Castle Throne
Complete Army of Darkness, build a Castle Throne and interact with it to command your roster. The Throne can send servants only to destinations you have already discovered. The game’s description states: “Sit down in the Throne and command your servants. Send them to hunt for treasure, knowledge and blood.”
Servant Coffins must be approximately within 14 tiles of the Throne to appear available for assignment. If a coffin is missing from the Throne interface, move the coffin or Throne closer before troubleshooting the servant itself.
Select a discovered destination, choose a mission duration from 2 to 16 real-time hours, and assign an available servant. The servant is occupied until the mission ends or fails, so account for the real-world time if you expect to use that NPC for castle defense.
Hunt duration, loot and success bonus
The following values are the hunt-table figures documented by the cited servant reference. They describe the trade-off between waiting longer, receiving more loot and gaining a larger success bonus. Patch changes can alter these values, so treat them as the current documented table rather than a permanent guarantee.

| 16 hours | 150% | +20% | Maximum documented loot and success bonus |
Choose duration according to the servant’s risk and your schedule. A long mission is not automatically better: the servant remains unavailable for defense, and a failed hunt still kills the servant. A shorter mission can be a sensible test for a newly converted NPC or an unfamiliar destination.
Matching servants to destinations
Use blood-type perks to reduce difficulty
Blood-type perks reduce hunt difficulty in environments they support. Before launching a mission, match the servant’s blood type to the destination’s environment whenever the interface indicates a supported pairing. Because blood-type perks do not stack, sending several servants with the same type does not multiply that advantage; a roster with different types covers more situations.
Use faction perks for regional loot
Faction perks increase loot in the servant’s home region. For a high-value run, prefer a servant whose faction is associated with the destination, then use the mission-duration table to decide how much time you are willing to commit.
Balance proficiency, risk and availability
Gear level raises hunt proficiency, while expertise contributes to the servant’s underlying health, power, proficiency and loot capability. A high-level, high-expertise servant with a matching blood type and faction is the strongest candidate for a long mission. A lower-quality servant can still fill a short assignment when the expected return is less important than preserving your best specialist for defense or a more dangerous region.
Castle defense and everyday servant use
Servants have two jobs outside the Throne: defending the castle and carrying mission loot. Summon a converted servant from its coffin and equip it before relying on it as a guard. The same equipment rule applies in both roles: gear level improves combat power, while secondary stats, set bonuses and durability do not affect servant performance.
Assigning a servant to a hunt removes it from immediate defensive duty until the mission is resolved. If an attack is likely, keep your strongest guards home and send only servants whose absence you can tolerate. This is a scheduling decision rather than a hidden combat penalty.

A failed hunt kills the assigned servant. The coffin remains the recovery point: interact with it and select resurrection, then pay 50 Blood Essence. Resurrection takes 10 minutes of real time. You cannot resurrect a servant while the castle is under attack, so resolve the siege first and keep enough Blood Essence available for recovery.

Servant or prisoner?
| Choose a Servant Coffin when… | Choose a Prison Cell when… |
|---|---|
| You need castle defense. | You need to drain blood regularly. |
| You want automated resource, knowledge or blood hunts. | You want to maintain access to a particular blood quality. |
| You can afford 100 Blood Essence and the conversion timer. | You are not ready to commit the NPC to a permanent worker role. |
| The target’s faction and blood type suit a discovered destination. | The target is more valuable as a controlled blood source than as a mission runner. |
The Dusk Caller is especially useful when you choose the Prison Cell route: it can move a subdued target to an empty cell despite the normal travel restriction. A Prison Cell and a Servant Coffin serve different purposes, so decide based on the resource you need now rather than converting every high-quality NPC automatically.
A practical first-servant plan
- Finish the Servants quest and make sure Dominate is available before searching for a target.
- Scout a safe route from the intended NPC to your castle. Remember that Waygates cannot be used during the escort.
- Compare blood quality, blood type and faction rather than judging the NPC by quality alone.
- Prepare 100 Blood Essence and an empty Servant Coffin before starting the capture.
- Weaken the target carefully to below roughly 30% health, complete Dominate, and protect the follower on the way home.
- Place Crypt Flooring around the coffin if you want the documented 20-minute conversion reduced to 10 minutes.
- Equip by gear level once conversion finishes; ignore secondary-stat optimization for servant calculations.
- Unlock Army of Darkness and build the Castle Throne when you are ready to run hunts.
- Start with a destination you have discovered and select a duration that leaves the servant available when you need castle defense.
- Keep 50 Blood Essence in reserve if you plan to run risky hunts, and remember that resurrection cannot begin during an attack.
Common problems and fixes
Dominate will not start
Confirm that the Servants quest is complete, the target is human or valid draculin, and it has an active blood type. Non-eligible creatures cannot be converted regardless of their health.
The target died during the escort
Subdued does not mean invulnerable. Clear hostile enemies before beginning the channel, avoid unnecessary fights on the return route, and do not assume the target can survive environmental damage. A dead escort target must be replaced with a new capture.
The target cannot use a Waygate
This is an intended restriction while the NPC is subdued. Walk it back to the castle or use a Dusk Caller to move it to an empty Prison Cell.
The coffin shows a long conversion timer
The standard timer is 20 real-time minutes. Crypt Flooring near the coffin changes the documented timer to 10 minutes; without that flooring, the longer timer is expected.
A servant is missing from the Throne
Check that it is not already assigned, that its coffin is approximately within 14 tiles of the Throne, and that the destination has been discovered. Coffin placement affects whether the Throne can command it.
A hunt failed and resurrection is unavailable
Ensure the castle is not currently under attack, then interact with the dead servant’s coffin. Resurrection requires 50 Blood Essence and occupies 10 real-time minutes.

Capture for the role you actually need. High blood quality raises expertise, gear level is the decisive equipment value, and blood-type and faction alignment make the difference between a merely functional servant and an efficient specialist. Use short hunts to limit exposure, long hunts only when the servant and destination justify the risk, and keep a reserve of Blood Essence for the inevitable failed mission. A Prison Cell remains the better choice whenever access to a dependable blood source matters more than defense or automated loot.
