Keep one stable title for the continuous YouTube broadcast, and put each changing episode name into the video itself as a title card or lower third. Changing the YouTube title edits the broadcast’s metadata; it does not add an episode-by-episode title graphic.
Choose where the episode title should appear
A continuous YouTube broadcast represents one YouTube video, with one broadcast-level title and description. You can update those details while managing the stream, but they identify the overall broadcast—not the episode currently playing. YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts resource documentation describes the broadcast as representing exactly one YouTube video.

Add episode names to the outgoing video
- Keep the broadcast title stable. Give the 24/7 stream a clear show or channel identity. You can optionally identify it as live, but avoid treating the broadcast title as the place for an episode name that changes throughout the day.
- Add a graphic at each episode transition. In the production workflow that assembles the video viewers see, show a title card at the start of an episode or place a lower third over the program for an appropriate interval. This is a production choice; YouTube’s metadata documentation does not require a particular graphics tool or prescribe how long the graphic should remain visible.
- Check the transition in the actual output. Confirm that the right title appears at the episode boundary and can be read at typical mobile viewing size. Check that it clears when the next episode begins, if that is how your graphics are designed.
The crucial distinction is that the graphic must be included in the video feed. Editing the broadcast’s title or description will not make a changing label appear in the picture. A production guide to continuous YouTube streams also describes using in-program graphics for episode titles.
Update the stream’s overall title or description in YouTube Studio
Use YouTube Studio when the overall information for the continuous broadcast should change—for example, to correct the show title or revise its general description. YouTube Help explains that stream metadata can be edited from the stream settings page or while scheduling. Its instructions cover encoder or mobile streams, not webcam streams.

- Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Select the stream and open its settings or Edit controls.
- Change the broadcast title or description and save the update.
These are broadcast-level edits. They are not a substitute for an episode card or lower third in the outgoing video. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
Automate metadata changes through the YouTube Live Streaming API
If you have a reason to update the broadcast’s metadata programmatically, the liveBroadcasts.update method supports snippet.title and snippet.description. It requires authorization and the broadcast resource ID. The method’s update rules matter: the request must include required resource properties, and leaving out a property that already has a value can delete that value.

- Retrieve the current broadcast resource so you can preserve the properties you intend to keep.
- Prepare an authorized update for the correct broadcast ID, setting the desired title or description deliberately.
- Include the required resource properties and review the request before submitting it, rather than sending a partial update that could remove existing values.
The API reference specifies a title length of 1–100 characters and a description limit of 5,000 characters. These are API validation constraints; check the current Studio interface if your workflow depends on its behavior. Give viewers a written episode guide
Add episode names—and approximate start times when useful—to the broadcast description. This gives viewers a text guide without implying that YouTube’s title metadata changes automatically with each episode. If DVR is enabled, YouTube says viewers can pause, rewind and continue during a live stream; that can help them revisit an earlier portion. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream title changes, but no episode name appears over the video: You changed broadcast metadata. Add the episode name to the outgoing program as a title card or lower third.
- The title graphic does not change at an episode boundary: Check that the production workflow switches to the intended graphic when the next episode starts, then inspect the outgoing video.
- An API update removes an existing setting: Retrieve the current broadcast and include the required properties you need to preserve in the update request. The API warns that omitted properties that already have values can be deleted.
- Viewers cannot find a particular episode: Add episode names and useful approximate start times to the description. DVR may let viewers pause and rewind if it is enabled.
