How to Add Mods to CurseForge: Install Them Into the Right Profile

Use CurseForge’s Install action to add a Minecraft mod to a compatible new or existing profile. For manually downloaded files, its support pages do not specify a verified profile copy path.

To add a Minecraft mod through CurseForge, click Install on the mod’s project page, then choose a new or existing profile that matches the mod’s Minecraft version and modloader. For a downloaded mod file, CurseForge’s Minecraft support pages do not specify a verified manual-copy destination, so don’t assume that dropping it into the vanilla .minecraft folder will add it to a CurseForge profile.

Install a mod through the CurseForge app or website

CurseForge’s documented method is to find the mod in the app or on the CurseForge website and use Install. The app checks the mod’s Minecraft version and modloader against the profile configuration.

  1. Open the mod’s project page in the CurseForge app or website and select Install.
  2. Choose a new profile or select an existing profile when prompted.
  3. For a new profile, review the detected Minecraft version and modloader. Adjust the configuration in Advanced settings if needed.
  4. To add more mods to a custom profile in the app, open that profile and select Add More Content.
  5. Review the target profile and complete the installation. If the app warns that the mod is already present, proceeding replaces its existing version.

CurseForge’s Installing Minecraft Mods and Modpacks page was modified August 19, 2025, and describes installing into a new or existing profile.

Check compatibility before installing

A mod must be compatible with the Minecraft version and modloader used by its profile. Check the project’s version or file information, then compare it with the profile’s settings.

  • Minecraft version: Select a mod file intended for a compatible game version.
  • Modloader: Match the profile to a compatible loader: Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. A Vanilla profile has no modloader and does not support mods.
  • Loader version: Use a loader version compatible with the mod. CurseForge preselects a version during profile creation; Advanced settings lets you change the configuration when necessary.

If CurseForge marks a profile incompatible, a mismatch in Minecraft version or modloader is a common cause. The app’s compatibility check is useful, but confirm the project’s stated requirements when choosing a file.

What if you downloaded the mod file yourself?

The CurseForge Minecraft instructions cited above explain app- and website-based installation, but they do not establish an exact manual file-copy destination for a downloaded mod. The standard CurseForge Minecraft folder locations are environment roots, not confirmation of a particular profile’s mods subfolder.

For that reason, don’t treat a path found in a general Minecraft guide—or the vanilla .minecraft folder—as the official destination for a CurseForge profile. Use CurseForge’s Install flow when the mod is available there. If you need to use a file downloaded elsewhere, first verify the active profile’s location and supported installation method in your current app setup; the official support information cited here does not provide a universal copy-and-paste path.

Know where CurseForge stores its Minecraft environment

CurseForge creates a separate Minecraft modding environment rather than simply using the vanilla game folder. Its Minecraft – Getting Started page, modified December 4, 2025, lists these standard locations:

CurseForge allows a different location during Advanced setup. These paths identify the modding environment root; they do not tell you which profile-specific folder to use for a manual copy.

Troubleshoot a mod that will not install or launch

  • The profile is marked incompatible: Compare the mod’s Minecraft version and modloader with the profile, and choose a compatible file or profile.
  • The mod is already installed: A duplicate warning means the profile already contains it. Proceeding overrides the existing version, so check before continuing.
  • The game fails to launch: CurseForge’s troubleshooting guidance notes that installed mods can conflict with one another or with the selected loader. Review recent additions and confirm their compatibility.
  • The modding folder is in a problematic location: CurseForge advises against using Desktop or OneDrive folders, the vanilla Minecraft directory, a drive root, or paths containing non-English or special characters for the modding-folder location. Change it through the app’s setup options if needed.

See CurseForge’s Getting Started and Minecraft troubleshooting guidance for setup and location details.
