To add a plugin, run a compatible Minecraft Java server such as Paper or Spigot, download the correct server-side .jar, place it directly in the server’s top-level plugins folder, restart the server, and verify it with /plugins (or plugins in the console). Then install any required dependencies and edit the configuration files the plugin creates.

What a Minecraft plugin does

A plugin is a server-side Java .jar that adds or changes server behavior. Common examples provide permissions, land protection, moderation tools, economies, minigames, teleportation, chat features, performance monitoring, and world-management commands. The plugin runs on the server, so ordinary players usually do not install the same file on their computers.

Plugins are different from other Minecraft add-ons:

  • Mods run through a mod loader such as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge and can add client-rendered blocks, items, dimensions, entities, or mechanics. Many require players to install matching client files.
  • Datapacks change supported game data and are placed in a world’s datapacks directory.
  • Resource packs change textures, sounds, models, or other assets rather than implementing server logic.

A plugin can still depend on a resource pack or optional client support for a particular feature, so “server-side” does not guarantee that every feature is visible without any client setup.

Which Minecraft servers can load plugins?

The procedure in this guide is for Minecraft Java Edition servers using Bukkit-compatible software. It does not apply to the vanilla server JAR, a normal Fabric or Forge server, or a Bedrock Dedicated Server.

Server software Bukkit/Spigot-style plugins What to know
Vanilla Java server No It has no Bukkit-style plugin loader.
Paper Yes Supports Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins; Paper-only plugins may use APIs unavailable elsewhere.
Spigot Yes Bukkit plugins generally work, although plugins that depend on internal CraftBukkit or Minecraft code can be exceptions.
Bukkit/CraftBukkit Yes, where applicable Check the plugin’s stated Minecraft and server-version support.
Purpur and other Paper-compatible forks Usually Compatibility depends on the fork, plugin, and exact versions.
Fabric Not directly Use a Fabric mod or a separately documented compatibility solution.
Forge/NeoForge Not directly Use a mod or an ecosystem specifically built for that server software.
Bedrock Dedicated Server No Java Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins are not Bedrock add-ons.

Paper is a practical default for a new Java server because its current documentation covers plugin installation and its ecosystem supports Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins. That is a recommendation for convenience, not a guarantee that every Spigot plugin works on every Paper release. Paper-specific plugins can use APIs that Bukkit-based implementations do not provide. See Paper’s compatibility notes at the Paper plugin reference and its quick start at the Paper quick-start guide.

Check your server before downloading anything

Identify the implementation

Look at the startup console: it normally names Paper, Spigot, or another implementation. A hosting panel usually shows the selected server software in its installation or startup settings. You can also inspect the server JAR filename. Do not assume that a folder named “server” means the server supports plugins.

A compatible server normally creates a top-level plugins directory after it completes an initial startup. If the directory is missing, first confirm that the server actually finished starting and that it is not running vanilla software. No single information command is universal across every implementation, so use the software’s own documentation or panel labels when the console is unclear.

Use the exact compatibility information

Before downloading, check all of the following on the plugin’s official project page or reputable repository:

  • The supported Minecraft version, such as a particular 1.20.x or 1.21.x release.
  • The supported implementation: Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, a named fork, or a proxy.
  • The plugin’s required Java version, if stated.
  • Whether the project is maintained and whether its latest release matches your server generation.
  • Required dependencies and optional soft dependencies.
  • Whether it is a backend-server plugin or a Velocity/BungeeCord proxy plugin.
  • Whether it needs a paid license, external account, database, API key, or third-party service.
  • Whether its license permits your intended use.

A label such as “1.21” is not a promise that every 1.21.x build works. Use the plugin’s own compatibility table and release notes for your exact Minecraft and server version.

Download from a source you trust

Paper recommends sources such as Hangar, Modrinth, and BukkitDev; some developers distribute releases through their verified GitHub project. Read the project’s documentation and verify that the download is intended for a server. Paper warns that plugins have unrestricted access to the server and the machine running it, so a malicious or tampered JAR can access files, credentials, worlds, and network resources. Do not use “cracked” premium plugins, suspicious launchers, random reposting sites, or a file whose publisher you cannot identify.

Install a plugin on Paper or Spigot

1. Ask players to leave and stop the server

Tell connected players to log out, then stop the server cleanly from the console or hosting panel. Do not copy files while the server is actively writing them.

2. Make a usable backup

Save a restorable copy before the first installation. Include:

  • All world folders, including the Nether and End if they are stored separately.
  • server.properties, eula.txt, and other server settings.
  • The existing plugins directory and each plugin’s data folder.
  • Permission files, databases, and other external storage used by your current plugins.

A plugin may modify worlds, inventories, permissions, or configuration on its first run. A backup gives you a way to undo those changes instead of merely deleting the JAR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Download the correct server file

The installable file normally ends in .jar. If a project provides a ZIP, extract it and choose the JAR intended for Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper. Do not put the ZIP itself in plugins. Do not rename the JAR unless the plugin’s documentation specifically tells you to; its filename can be useful when matching startup errors to a release.

4. Find the server’s top-level directory

For a self-hosted server, open the directory containing the server JAR, server.properties, world folders, and usually eula.txt. The destination is the plugins folder beside those files.

  • COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.

For rented hosting, use the provider’s File Manager, SFTP, or FTP access. Panel labels differ, but the destination remains the server’s top-level plugins directory. Paper describes this same workflow for shared hosting in its plugin-installation guide.

5. Upload the JAR directly into plugins

Place the file at a path similar to plugins/ExamplePlugin.jar. Do not put it in world/plugins, mods, config, or a newly created plugin data folder. The plugin’s data folder is normally created automatically after its first successful load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Start the server and read the console

Start the server normally and watch the complete startup log. Look for an enable or “loaded” message, but also watch for dependency failures, version errors, Java exceptions, configuration parse errors, and database connection failures. A restart is the normal installation method. Avoid making /reload your default: Paper’s quick-start documentation warns that reloading can cause issues with some plugins, including inconsistent tasks, event handlers, or libraries.

7. Verify the plugin

After the server finishes loading, run this in the server console:

plugins

Or, from an operator-enabled in-game account, run:

/plugins

A successfully enabled plugin normally appears in green. A missing or red entry means the server did not enable it successfully; the console exception is more useful than the color by itself. Paper documents both verification methods at docs.papermc.io/paper/adding-plugins/.

8. Install dependencies before testing features

A hard dependency is required for the plugin to load or function. A soft dependency is optional but enables extra integrations. Install every required dependency named by the plugin, using a build compatible with your server version, and restart again. If the log identifies a missing dependency by name, obtain that exact dependency from its official project page rather than guessing at a similarly named file. Plugin listings are expected to identify these requirements; see Spigot’s plugin guidance.

Install through a hosting panel

The labels vary between providers, but the process is usually:

  1. Stop the server from the panel.
  2. Open File Manager, Files, or the equivalent file browser.
  3. Open the top-level plugins directory.
  4. Upload the correct plugin .jar directly into it.
  5. Start the server and keep the live console open.
  6. Confirm the plugin with /plugins in-game or plugins in the console.

Some panels offer a one-click plugin installer. Treat it as an upload convenience, not a compatibility check: verify the selected Minecraft version, server implementation, plugin build, dependencies, and release date yourself. A panel should also let you upload a custom JAR when the automated catalog is outdated or incomplete.

If SFTP is available, connect with the credentials supplied by the host, browse to the server directory, and upload the JAR to plugins. Keep a local backup as well as any automatic restore point offered by the host.

Configure the plugin after it loads

Most plugins create a data directory only after their first successful startup. A typical path is:

plugins/<PluginName>/

Stop the server cleanly before editing files. Depending on the project, you may find config.yml, settings.yml, messages.yml, permissions.yml, a database file, or another storage format. Do not assume every plugin uses config.yml; follow that plugin’s documentation.

  1. Start once with the JAR installed so the data folder and default files are generated.
  2. Stop the server.
  3. Read the plugin’s configuration documentation and edit only the settings you understand.
  4. Save the files with the required YAML indentation or format.
  5. Start the server again and test the documented commands and behavior.

Installation and permissions are separate tasks. The server console can run many commands without player permissions, while an in-game command normally requires operator status or an assigned permission node. Use the plugin’s documentation for its exact command syntax and permission nodes; do not invent a generic reload or help command.

Backend plugins, proxy plugins, and network setups

A Paper or Spigot server is a backend server. Velocity and BungeeCord are proxies that route players between backend servers. A proxy plugin belongs in the proxy’s plugin directory, not automatically in a backend server’s plugins folder. Network-wide systems may require a proxy component plus one or more backend components. The project documentation should state where each JAR goes.

Troubleshoot a plugin that will not load

Symptom Likely causes First action
No plugins folder Vanilla software, incomplete first startup, or wrong directory Confirm the implementation and let a compatible server complete one startup.
Plugin absent from the list Wrong location, ZIP instead of JAR, no restart, incompatible platform, corrupt file, invalid descriptor, or unsupported Java/Minecraft version Stop the server, confirm the JAR is directly inside plugins, then read the full startup log.
Plugin appears in red Enable failure, missing dependency, invalid description, incompatible class, or configuration/database error Search the console for the exception named below and follow the plugin’s release notes.
Commands are denied Missing permission, incorrect syntax, disabled feature, command conflict, or wrong server role Test as an operator, check the documented permission node, and confirm the command belongs to this plugin.
Features are missing Optional dependency absent, feature disabled, or configuration not reloaded by restart Review the generated configuration and dependency list, then perform a full restart.
Crashes or severe lag begin after installation Plugin conflict, incompatible build, duplicate JAR, or faulty library Stop the server, move the JAR out of plugins, and restore the backup if world or data changes occurred.

Recognize the common log errors

  • UnknownDependency: a required plugin is missing or is not recognized.
  • InvalidPluginException: the file is not a valid loadable plugin or targets an incompatible loader.
  • InvalidDescriptionException: the plugin metadata, often its descriptor, is invalid.
  • UnsupportedClassVersionError: the plugin was compiled for a newer Java runtime than the one running the server.
  • NoSuchMethodError or ClassNotFoundException: commonly an API, dependency, or server-version mismatch.

These names narrow the investigation but do not prove one universal cause. Check the complete stack trace, the plugin’s supported versions, and its issue tracker or release notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix a Java-version error

Compare the Java requirement of the server release with the Java requirement of the plugin. Upgrade Java only after confirming that the Paper, Spigot, or fork version supports that runtime. Then restart and check the console again. The exact requirement varies by server and Minecraft version, so do not apply a Java upgrade copied from an unrelated release.

Recover from a crash or bad change

  1. Stop the server if it is unstable.
  2. Move the suspected plugin JAR out of plugins rather than deleting your only copy.
  3. Remove or preserve its data folder according to whether you need to retain settings and player data.
  4. Start the server and confirm that dependent plugins are not now failing.
  5. Restore the pre-installation backup if the plugin changed worlds, inventories, permissions, or other data unexpectedly.
  6. Add plugins one at a time so the offending file can be isolated.

Plugins versus mods: choose the right server type

Choose a plugin when the feature fits the Bukkit/Spigot/Paper API: administration, permissions, protection, moderation, commands, economy, teleportation, or server rules. This lets players usually join with an ordinary Java client.

Choose Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge when the feature requires new client-rendered blocks, items, dimensions, entities, or mechanics and a specific mod requires that loader. A Fabric or Forge mod cannot normally be dropped into Paper’s plugins folder, and a Paper plugin cannot normally be placed in a modded server’s mods folder. Use the ecosystem named by the project author.

Remove a plugin safely

  1. Stop the server cleanly.
  2. Back up the current world, server files, and plugin data.
  3. Move the plugin JAR out of plugins so it can be restored if needed.
  4. Decide whether to keep its data folder. Keeping it preserves settings and player data if you may reinstall; deleting it removes that stored state and should be done only when you understand the consequences.
  5. Start the server and check for other plugins reporting a missing dependency.
  6. Restore the backup if the removed plugin had already changed world or persistent data in a way you need to undo.

Paper or Spigot for a new server?

Choose Good fit Qualification
Paper New Java servers seeking current documentation, modern features, and compatibility with Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins. Paper-only plugins may use APIs unavailable on other implementations; verify each plugin.
Spigot Existing Spigot installations, hosting panels that provide Spigot, or plugin sets explicitly tested on Spigot. Spigot says Bukkit plugins generally work, but internal implementation dependencies can be exceptions.

Spigot’s installation guidance describes dropping a plugin JAR into the plugins directory, starting the server, waiting for it to enable, and then reviewing the generated data files at spigotmc.org/wiki/installation/. Its general installation page also warns against random Spigot JAR downloads because malicious or outdated copies can create vulnerabilities: the Spigot installation warning.

Sources and next steps

For the official workflow and security warning, use Paper’s adding-plugins guide. Paper’s plugin-loading explanation is at how plugins work, and its administration hub is the Paper admin documentation. Paper’s project and documentation home are papermc.io and docs.papermc.io/paper; its next-steps page is Paper next steps.

For a clean first installation, remember the sequence: compatible Java server, trusted and version-matched JAR, backup, top-level plugins folder, full restart, console check, /plugins verification, then dependencies and configuration.
