Install Tekkit through the official Technic Launcher, select the exact pack your group will use, and install the matching server download if you are hosting. Tekkit Classic, Tekkit 2, and Tekkit are separate packs—not interchangeable profiles—so everyone must use the same edition and version. For memory, community guidance suggests 2–3 GB for client-only play and at least 4 GB when one computer runs both a client and a server; those figures are practical targets, not current official minimums.
What the Technic Launcher does
The Technic Launcher is the normal installation route for Tekkit on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Instead of manually assembling individual mods, you choose a published pack and let the launcher download and install its files. Technic describes the process as “It’s as easy as clicking play.” You still need to choose the correct pack, sign in, and keep your installation aligned with the server and the other players.

A launcher installation is separate from a vanilla Minecraft installation. Tekkit has its own modpack directory, configuration files, worlds, and logs. If you move between packs, do not assume that a world or server folder can be copied safely between them.

Search results in the launcher include three distinct entries. Decide which one your group intends to play before downloading a server archive or creating a world.

The word “Tekkit” in a conversation is therefore ambiguous. Ask friends to name the full launcher entry—Classic, 2, or Tekkit—and record the displayed version before anyone installs a server. A server made for one entry will not become compatible merely because another entry has a similar name.
Install and launch Tekkit
- Download and install the official Technic Launcher. Choose the installer for Windows, macOS, or Linux, then open it after installation.
- Sign in through the launcher. Use the account and authentication flow shown by the current launcher. A successful login is required before launching the pack.
- Search for the exact pack name. Enter Tekkit Classic, Tekkit 2, or Tekkit, depending on your group’s decision. Do not select the first result just because it contains the word “Tekkit.”
- Open the pack page and click Install. Allow the launcher to download the modpack and create its installation directory. Download time depends on your connection and the size of the pack.
- Launch the installed pack. Select the installed entry and use Play. The first launch can take longer while files and caches are created.
- Verify the version before joining a server. Compare the version shown by your launcher with the version named by the server administrator. If they differ, update or install the pack version the administrator is actually running rather than guessing.
Every player should repeat this process with the same pack entry and version. A player who installs Classic while the server owner prepared Tekkit 2 can often reach the server address but will fail during connection or receive a missing-mod/version error.
Keep clients and the server synchronized
Modded multiplayer depends on a matching content set and configuration. Treat the pack name and version as a single identifier. Write it in your group chat, for example, “Tekkit 2 — [the exact version displayed by the launcher],” and ask players to confirm that identifier before troubleshooting network problems.

- Use the server download linked on the official page for the same pack entry players installed.
- Do not mix a Classic server archive with a Tekkit 2 client, or a standalone Tekkit archive with either of them.
- When updating, back up the world first and have every player update before reconnecting.
- Avoid copying one player’s configuration or mod files to everyone unless the pack’s documentation explicitly requires it; manually altered files can create a different installation from the published pack.
Find the Tekkit installation folder
The launcher can reveal the active directory, which is safer than relying on a remembered path. In the pack’s page, open Modpack Options, then choose Open/Install Folder. This is the preferred method because locations vary by operating system, launcher setup, and pack.
For reference, a community resource lists these default locations for Tekkit Classic:

These are examples for the Classic pack, not guaranteed universal paths. A different pack may use a different final folder, and a custom launcher data location will change the root. Use the in-launcher command first, then inspect the folder for saves, logs, configuration files, and the installed pack files.

What to back up
- World saves: copy the save directory while the game is closed so files are not being written.
- Configuration: preserve configuration files before changing settings or applying an update.
- Server data: for a self-hosted server, back up the entire server directory or at minimum its world, configuration, permissions, and whitelist files.
- Logs: retain a log from a failed launch or connection attempt when asking for help; it is more useful than a screenshot of the error alone.
Host a Tekkit server: choose an approach
Each official Tekkit pack page exposes a Server Download link. Download the archive belonging to the exact edition and version your players installed. From there, you can run the server yourself or use a managed game-server provider.

Managed hosting does not remove compatibility work: you still need the provider to offer the same Tekkit edition and version that players install. Check its available pack list and server-file support before paying, and confirm how backups, world downloads, console access, and version changes work. - Select the edition and version. Record the exact client version your group will use.
- Download its Server Download archive. Save it in a dedicated directory with enough disk space for the initial files, world growth, and backups.
- Extract the archive. Keep the extracted files together. Do not scatter libraries, configuration files, or scripts across unrelated directories.
- Read the included documentation and startup files. Identify the required Java/runtime version, the provided launch script or command, the license or first-run prompts, and the configuration file names. These instructions are authoritative for that archive.
- Run the server once locally. Let it create its initial configuration, then stop it cleanly using the method documented in the bundle. Do not terminate the process while it is saving a world.
- Set administrative access. Use the bundle’s documented operator, whitelist, permissions, and server-settings procedures. Grant operator privileges only to people who need them.
- Configure gameplay settings. Review the generated configuration and server properties. Change one setting at a time, record the change, and restart cleanly when the documentation requires it.
- Test on the host computer. Confirm that the server starts without errors, creates or loads the intended world, and accepts a local connection before asking friends to connect.
- Prepare external access. Configure the operating system firewall and, if the server is behind a router, the router’s forwarding rule according to the current archive and your network equipment’s documentation. The precise port and protocol are version- and setup-dependent, so do not reuse a port number from an unrelated guide.
- Share only the address friends need. Give players the reachable address and the exact pack/version identifier. Never publish administrator credentials or private configuration files.
- Automate backups and shutdowns. Schedule copies of the world and configuration, and stop the server through its console or documented command before maintenance.
Hardware and uptime considerations
Running a server and a graphical client on one computer combines their memory and CPU demand. Leave headroom for the operating system and background processes instead of allocating every available gigabyte. A separate host reduces contention, but it still needs reliable storage, cooling, and a stable connection. An always-on machine also needs a recovery plan after power loss or an operating-system update.

Use the launcher or pack-provided memory setting rather than blindly assigning all system RAM. If the computer begins swapping, the launcher crashes, or the server reports out-of-memory errors, close other programs, reduce graphics settings, check the selected runtime instructions, and reassess whether the machine should run both processes. More allocated memory cannot fix an incorrect pack version, a broken configuration, or a network problem.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The pack is missing from search
Check the spelling and search the complete name, including “Classic” or “2.” Confirm that the launcher is current enough to display the pack catalog, then reopen it and sign in again. If a pack page is available but installation fails, note the launcher’s error and the exact operating system before seeking support.
The launcher installs, but the game will not start
- Open Modpack Options → Open/Install Folder and confirm that the launcher is using the intended directory.
- Check available disk space and memory; incomplete downloads can leave a pack that looks installed but is not runnable.
- Remove only files the pack’s documentation identifies as safe to regenerate, and back up the directory first.
- Verify that you are using the runtime version required by the installed pack or server bundle; do not assume a runtime recommendation from another Tekkit edition applies.
- Keep the launcher error log and the time of the failure for diagnosis.
The server starts, but friends cannot connect
First test locally on the host. If local play works, check that the server process is still running, the operating system firewall permits the documented server application or port, and the router rule points to the correct host computer. Confirm that friends are using the same pack entry and version. If you changed networks, replaced the router, or moved the server machine, re-check the address and forwarding settings rather than assuming the old setup remains valid.
A player receives a missing-mod or incompatible-version error
Compare the full pack name and displayed version on the player’s launcher with the server archive name and the administrator’s record. Reinstalling a different Tekkit entry will not solve a mismatch. If the server owner modified files after extracting the archive, restore a known-good backup or follow the pack’s documented configuration process before changing client files.

The world will not load after an update
Stop using the updated copy until you have a backup of the previous world and server directory. Restore the last known-good version, verify that every player and the server use the intended pack version, and consult the update notes included with the archive. Never test an uncertain update on the only copy of a long-running world.
Updating without losing a world
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete world and configuration data to a dated backup location.
- Record the old pack name, version, runtime instruction, and any settings you changed.
- Install or extract the new server bundle in a separate directory rather than overwriting the old one.
- Read its included documentation, migrate only the files it identifies, and start the new server for a controlled test.
- Have every player update the launcher pack to the same version before reconnecting.
- Keep the old directory and backup until the new world has been opened and tested successfully.
A practical checklist before inviting friends
- Everyone can state the same full pack name: Tekkit Classic, Tekkit 2, or Tekkit.
- Everyone has the same displayed version.
- The server archive came from that pack’s own Server Download link.
- The host has enough memory headroom; use the 2–3 GB client-only and 4 GB-or-more combined-use figures only as community starting guidance.
- The server starts and accepts a local test connection.
- Firewall and router settings follow the selected bundle’s current instructions.
- Operator and whitelist permissions are configured deliberately.
- World and configuration backups exist before public access and before every update.
- The group knows where the active client folder is through Modpack Options, rather than relying on an assumed path.
