To add rain, run a WeatherFX-compatible server configuration, select a rain weather type, and require every driver who should see it to use a paid Custom Shaders Patch preview build. AssettoServer documents CSP 0.1.76 or newer for WeatherFX, dynamic weather and RainFX. Rain can be rendered without wet-weather physics, or you can enable the preview-build options that support physics when both server and clients are configured for them.

What you need before changing the server
Rain in an online Assetto Corsa session is not a switch provided by the unmodified game. The server chooses a WeatherFX weather state, while each client’s Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) renders the weather effects it supports. That split explains why one driver can see rain while another sees a dry track even though they joined the same session.

A standard dedicated-server installation can host the session, but the weather settings and client support still have to be compatible with the CSP features you intend to use.
- Server-side CSP compatibility: AssettoServer’s introduction specifies CSP 0.1.76 or newer for dynamic weather and RainFX.
- Client CSP: Anyone who should actually render rain needs a compatible paid CSP preview build. Stable CSP releases without the preview rain implementation do not provide the same RainFX capability.
- Weather controller: You may use the weather scripts installed with CSP, or an extension such as Sol or Pure. These controllers select and describe weather, but they do not include the RainFX implementation themselves.
- Access to the server files: You need permission to edit
cfg/server_cfg.ini, restart the server, and, if necessary, edit the CSP extra-options file on the machine running the server.
Make a copy of the configuration before editing it. A backup lets you restore the last known-good weather state if a malformed section prevents the server from starting.
How rain is assembled in an online session
There are three separate decisions, and treating them as one is the source of most failed setups.

1. The server announces a weather state
The server’s [WEATHER_0] section contains a GRAPHICS value. That value identifies a weather type exposed by the installed WeatherFX script. A rain entry can therefore be selected only if the script currently installed on the server exposes that entry.
2. The client renders the available effects
CSP WeatherFX interprets the announced state. RainFX is supplied by paid preview builds of CSP, not by Sol or Pure. A client without a compatible preview can still join, depending on the rest of the server setup, but it will not render the RainFX layer.

Visual precipitation and wet-surface physics are independent. You can show rain while deliberately disabling rain physics, or use the preview rain options that add physics when the server and every relevant client support them. Never assume that a visible rain effect means grip, spray or braking behavior is synchronized.
Install the required client and server components
Install a compatible CSP preview on each driver’s PC
Install the paid CSP preview build on every computer whose driver must see rain. The beginner documentation for AssettoServer is explicit: rain does not come with Sol or Pure; it is part of the paid preview versions of Custom Shaders Patch.
Keep a note of the preview version used for testing. If one driver updates or rolls back independently, the session can still start while that driver receives a different visual result or lacks physics support.

Confirm the server’s WeatherFX support
For AssettoServer, use CSP 0.1.76 or newer as the baseline documented for dynamic weather and RainFX. The exact weather names and IDs are supplied by the WeatherFX script installed with the CSP setup. Do not copy a numeric ID from an old tutorial without checking that the same script and version are installed now.

Sol and Pure are optional weather and graphics extensions. Pure’s installation documentation instructs users to extract it into the game root and then select Pure Gamma or Pure LCS under CSP’s WeatherFX page. That selection controls the weather script; it does not replace the CSP preview requirement for RainFX.
Method 1: edit server_cfg.ini directly
Manual editing is the most reliable method when Content Manager’s weather list does not show the entry you need.
- Stop the AssettoServer process before editing its files. Stopping first prevents the running process from overwriting your changes when it exits.
- Open the server’s
cfg/server_cfg.iniin a plain-text editor. - Find the
[WEATHER_0]section. If the section contains aGRAPHICSline, edit its value; if it is absent, add the setting in that section according to the server’s configuration format. - Replace the existing graphics weather value with the rain WeatherFX type exposed by your installed script. AssettoServer’s beginner example uses a Heavy Rain type, but the numeric ID is not universal. Use the ID shown by the current WeatherFX script rather than blindly reusing an outdated number.
- Save the file as plain text, retaining the exact section and key spelling.
- Start or restart the server and join with a test client that has the required CSP preview installed.
A conceptual section looks like this; the value is deliberately shown as a placeholder for the ID supplied by your installed script, not as a universal number:

GRAPHICS=<rain-weather-type-exposed-by-your-WeatherFX-script>If the server starts but remains dry, check the client’s WeatherFX page and then verify that the selected ID belongs to the script currently active on the server. If the server fails to start, restore the backup and correct the section syntax before testing a different weather value.

Method 2: select rain in Content Manager
Content Manager provides a graphical way to write the same weather choice into a server preset.
- Open the server preset in Content Manager.
- Open the Conditions tab.
- Choose WeatherFX as the weather system or controller, if the preset offers that choice.
- Select the desired rain weather from the available list.
- Save the preset.
- Restart the dedicated server. A saved preset does not change an already-running process until the server reloads its configuration.
The dropdown is generated from the weather script installed and selected in that environment. If the rain type you need is missing, do not invent an ID in the interface. Check the active WeatherFX controller, verify the script installation, and use the manual server_cfg.ini method when the script exposes an entry that the interface fails to list.
Visual rain without rain physics
Some communities want rain on the screen but do not want wet-track grip changes. AssettoServer’s beginner guide documents an extra rule for that case. Add the following to the CSP extra-options configuration used by the server:

DISABLE_RAIN_PHYSICS=1This setting disables rain physics while leaving the visual rain configuration available. Restart the server after saving it, and make sure the clients are still using a CSP preview capable of rendering RainFX. The rule is useful for demonstrations, photo sessions and leagues that want a rain atmosphere without changing car behavior.
Do not describe this mode as a wet-track simulation. With the rule enabled, drivers should not expect rain-induced grip loss, water effects or other physics consequences.

Rain physics with preview builds
Physics-capable rain uses the preview rain options documented for the installed CSP and server build. The server options documentation lists a RAIN_PREVIEW group with settings for INTENSITY, REQUIRED and WITH_PHYSICS. These options require preview CSP builds, and the exact keys and accepted values can vary between preview versions.
- INTENSITY: controls the requested rain intensity. A hosting MOTD tutorial uses 85 as an example value; that is an example configuration, not a measured standard or a recommended universal setting.
- REQUIRED: determines whether the server expects the preview rain feature from clients. Use the meaning documented for the preview build you have installed before making it mandatory.
- WITH_PHYSICS: requests the physics-capable rain mode when the server and clients support it.
Match the server options to the documentation shipped with the preview version in use. Do not promise synchronized wet-grip behavior merely because WITH_PHYSICS appears in a configuration file: every relevant client must support the same preview feature, and the server’s extended physics settings must be compatible with that build.
For a cautious rollout, first test the weather visually with physics disabled. Then create a separate test preset for physics, verify braking and cornering with several clients, and only afterward use it in a public event.

Make the client requirement clear to players
Put the requirement in the server name, welcome message or league instructions. State that CSP 0.1.76 or newer is the documented baseline for AssettoServer WeatherFX and that visible rain requires a paid CSP preview build. If physics are enabled, state the exact preview version and whether clients without it are refused or merely receive reduced effects.
Ask drivers to verify that WeatherFX is active before joining an event. In CSP, the WeatherFX page should show the selected controller and its weather entries. A driver who has installed a weather script but has not selected it can receive a different result from the server’s intended setup.

Do not require Sol or Pure solely to obtain rain. They are optional controllers; RainFX itself comes from the CSP preview implementation.

Everyone sees dry weather
- Confirm that the server actually restarted after the configuration change.
- Open
server_cfg.iniand verify the rain value is inside[WEATHER_0], not in another section. - Check that the selected type exists in the active WeatherFX script. IDs from a different script or older version may point to another weather or to nothing usable.
- Verify that the clients’ CSP versions meet the documented 0.1.76-or-newer baseline and that the paid preview is installed and active.
One driver sees rain and another does not
The server cannot make a client render an effect its installed CSP does not support. Compare the two drivers’ CSP preview versions, WeatherFX controller selection and enabled extensions. Different client weather configurations are a known reason for different output even when the server settings are identical.
The rain weather is absent from Content Manager
The list is populated from the installed and selected weather script. Check whether the intended controller is active, then inspect the script’s available weather names. If the script exposes the entry but Content Manager does not list it, edit server_cfg.ini manually with the current script’s ID and restart.
Rain appears, but the track behaves dry
Look for DISABLE_RAIN_PHYSICS=1. That rule intentionally separates graphics from physics. If it is not present, inspect the RAIN_PREVIEW options and confirm that WITH_PHYSICS is supported by the installed preview. A physics-capable client and a visual-only client should not be treated as equivalent.
The server will not start after editing
Stop the process, restore the backup, and compare the changed section character by character. Common recovery steps are removing an unsupported key, restoring the original weather ID, and testing one change at a time. Once the server starts with the backup, reapply the rain setting using the syntax documented for the installed build.

Operational checklist before opening the server
- AssettoServer or the chosen dedicated-server installation starts normally.
- The server and test clients use WeatherFX-compatible CSP versions; AssettoServer documents 0.1.76 or newer for dynamic weather and RainFX.
- Every driver expected to see rain has a compatible paid CSP preview build.
- The selected rain type exists in the currently installed WeatherFX script.
cfg/server_cfg.inicontains the intended[WEATHER_0]andGRAPHICSvalues.- The server was restarted after every configuration change.
- The selected Pure, Sol or other controller matches the weather setup, if one is being used.
- The league instructions explain whether rain physics are disabled or enabled.
- A test session has checked both a preview-equipped client and, if permitted, a client with a different CSP setup so you know how compatibility differences appear.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct access to server_cfg.ini, CSP extra rules and restart procedures. It is the better fit when you need scripted weather changes, repeatable test presets or control over preview-specific options.
Managed Assetto Corsa hosting can be easier when you do not want to maintain server files. Ask the host whether it supports AssettoServer WeatherFX, permits editing the [WEATHER_0] graphics value and exposes the preview rain options you need. Hosting does not remove the client-side requirement: each driver still needs a compatible CSP preview to render RainFX.
Recommended rollout sequence
- Install the same CSP preview generation on the administrator’s test client and on a second test client.
- Select the intended WeatherFX controller and confirm that a rain type is available locally.
- Set the rain weather through Content Manager, or edit
[WEATHER_0]and itsGRAPHICSvalue manually. - Restart the server and verify visual rain with physics disabled.
- If wet-weather handling is required, remove the disable rule and configure the preview’s
RAIN_PREVIEWoptions according to that build’s documentation. - Test with multiple clients before announcing the event, recording the preview version and controller selection in the joining instructions.
This sequence isolates rendering problems from physics problems, so a failed physics test does not obscure a correctly configured visual-rain setup.
