Choose Uptime Kuma when you want to run monitoring on your own infrastructure, poll as often as every 20 seconds, and use specialist checks such as Docker-container, Steam game-server, WebSocket, DNS-record, JSON, and push monitors. Choose UptimeRobot when you want an external, managed service with a documented v3 REST API, published plan limits, and no monitoring server to secure or upgrade.
The important trade-off is operational ownership. Kuma gives you control but can fail alongside the services it watches if you place it in the same host or network. UptimeRobot gives you an independent observation point, but your monitoring depends on a SaaS provider and its plan rules.

UptimeRobot: monitoring delivered as SaaS
UptimeRobot runs the monitoring service for you. You create monitors in its hosted dashboard or through its API, and the provider supplies the checking infrastructure, service availability, and software maintenance. The published Free plan documentation states a limit of up to 50 monitors checked at five-minute intervals.

What self-hosting Uptime Kuma really requires
Installing a container is only the visible part of operating Kuma. A useful deployment must continue running during the failures you care about and must retain its configuration and history after a restart.
Choose a host and storage location
The README documents Docker Compose installation, a Docker image, and a web service using port 3001. It also documents a non-Docker Node.js/npm installation path. Select the method that matches your existing operations practice rather than choosing solely on initial convenience.
Do not place the data volume on NFS: the official README warns that NFS file systems are not supported for the data volume. Use local or otherwise supported storage, and make sure the volume survives container replacement. A host with an ephemeral filesystem can make a healthy-looking monitor lose its configuration and incident history when it is rebuilt.

Protect the management interface
Decide how the web interface will be reached before you expose it. Restrict administrative access with network controls or an authenticated reverse-proxy path, enable two-factor authentication where appropriate, and use TLS for administration and notifications that contain operational details. Keep the monitor itself patched, and treat notification credentials, SMTP passwords, bot tokens, and webhook URLs as secrets.
Back up and test recovery
Back up the Kuma data volume on a schedule that matches the value of your monitor definitions and history. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Test restoring it to a separate instance, confirm that monitors and notification targets return, and document the procedure for the person who will respond to a failed host.
Separate the monitor from the services it observes
If Kuma runs on the same physical server, hypervisor, power circuit, Docker host, or local network as your game server, a single failure can remove both the monitored service and the monitor. For a homelab, an inexpensive second host, a separate site, or an independent network path is more valuable than adding many checks to one tightly coupled machine.
Placement also affects what a failure means. A check from inside your LAN can prove that a service is reachable to local clients, but it cannot prove that players on the public internet can reach it. Conversely, an external check may report an outage caused by your ISP while the service itself remains healthy locally.

How UptimeRobot changes the operational burden
With UptimeRobot, you do not provision a monitoring server, select a filesystem, or apply application upgrades. The trade-off is control: availability, feature behavior, API limits, and plan entitlements are determined by the hosted service.
Use the published limits as design inputs
The cited Free plan allows up to 50 monitors and five-minute intervals. That can cover a small website portfolio, a side project, or a handful of public game services, but it is not equivalent to Kuma’s documented 20-second cadence. A five-minute interval can delay detection by several minutes even before notification delivery and human response are considered.

Plan limits can change. The monitor quota and interval above are documented figures accessed in 2026, not a permanent guarantee. Check the current UptimeRobot plan and API pages when you make a purchasing or architecture decision.
Use the API when monitors are part of deployment
The v3 REST API is useful when infrastructure code or a release pipeline needs to create monitors, change maintenance windows, update status pages, or inspect SSL and cron checks. Keep API credentials in a secret store, give automation only the permissions it needs, and make monitor creation idempotent so a repeated deployment does not create duplicates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The API documentation specifically describes CI/CD use and integrations with Grafana and Google Cloud Monitoring. That is a practical advantage for teams that already standardize on REST clients, dashboards, or cloud automation. Kuma’s documented WebSocket and single-page-application architecture means you should investigate its implementation details before building an integration that assumes a supported REST interface.
Monitor types: which product covers your endpoint?
Websites and APIs
Both products can monitor ordinary HTTP or HTTPS endpoints. Kuma adds keyword checks and JSON-query checks, which can verify that a response contains expected text or that a structured field has the right value rather than merely returning a successful status code. These checks are useful for login pages, API health responses, and game-related web services where an HTTP server can answer while the application is broken.
Network and protocol checks
Kuma’s listed TCP, ping, WebSocket, and DNS-record monitors let you test different layers of a service. A ping can show host reachability; TCP can show that a port accepts connections; a WebSocket check can exercise a persistent protocol; and a DNS-record check can detect an unexpected resolution change. Use the check that corresponds to the failure you want to detect instead of treating every outage as an HTTP problem.
Game-server and container checks
The Steam game-server monitor is particularly relevant to video-game communities and homelabs running dedicated servers. Kuma also lists Docker-container monitoring, allowing the monitoring stack to watch local container state in addition to externally visible endpoints. UptimeRobot’s cited free-plan material focuses on HTTP/website, keyword, ping, and port monitoring; do not assume that a specialized Kuma monitor has a direct equivalent in the hosted plan.

Push and scheduled-job checks
A push monitor is designed for a job that reports its own success to the monitor. This is useful for backups, synchronization scripts, and scheduled game-server maintenance tasks: the absence of a timely push can reveal a silent failure that an external port check would miss. UptimeRobot’s API documentation includes cron jobs and maintenance windows, which can be used to represent scheduled work and planned downtime in an automated workflow.
Status pages and public incident communication
Both products can publish status information, but the details differ. Kuma advertises multiple status pages and the ability to map pages to specific domains. That suits a homelab operator who wants separate pages for personal services, a gaming community, and internal infrastructure.
UptimeRobot’s help documentation says status pages are available across all subscription plans. The cited limits are one status page on Free and up to three on Solo. Solo also adds custom design, a custom domain, password protection, and translations. Team is described as allowing up to 100 status pages, while Scale is described as unlimited. These plan entitlements are volatile, so verify them immediately before publishing or purchasing.

Choosing for a homelab or game-server setup
Pick Uptime Kuma when control is the priority
- You already operate Docker, a small Linux host, or another supported runtime.
- You need 20-second polling or a broad set of protocol-specific checks.
- You want Steam game-server, Docker-container, WebSocket, DNS, JSON, or push monitors.
- You prefer to keep telemetry and configuration inside infrastructure you control.
- You are willing to handle TLS, access control, storage, backups, updates, and recovery.
Pick UptimeRobot when independence from your server is the priority
- You want monitoring to work without installing or maintaining another server.
- Your team needs a documented REST API for CI/CD, dashboards, or cloud integrations.
- Your public websites or side projects fit the cited Free-plan allowance of 50 monitors at five-minute intervals.
- You need an external observation point for a home connection or self-hosted game server.
- You would rather accept vendor plan and availability constraints than own the monitoring stack.
Use both when the failure modes justify it
Some operators deliberately combine a local Kuma instance with an external service. Kuma can provide fast, detailed checks for containers and internal protocols, while the external service confirms public reachability when the home network, power, or primary host fails. This arrangement costs more attention and may produce duplicate alerts, so define which system is authoritative for each incident and suppress planned-maintenance notifications consistently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical selection procedure
- List the failures you need to detect. Separate HTTP errors, DNS mistakes, closed ports, dead containers, Steam server failures, missed scheduled jobs, and loss of internet connectivity.
- Mark where each check must run. Internal checks can validate LAN behavior; external checks are necessary to prove public reachability. Avoid placing every observer in the same rack, host, or network.
- Set a detection target. If a five-minute interval is acceptable, UptimeRobot’s cited Free plan may be sufficient. If you need sub-minute polling, Kuma’s documented 20-second interval is the relevant capability, subject to the capacity of your host.
- Count monitors and status pages. Compare your current inventory with UptimeRobot’s 50-monitor Free allowance and status-page limits. Kuma’s capacity is determined by the machine and workload you provide, not a published SaaS quota.
- Decide who owns maintenance. Assign responsibility for patching, credentials, backups, and incident response if you self-host. If that work has no owner, a managed service is the safer operational choice.
- Validate automation requirements. Choose UptimeRobot when a supported v3 REST API is a hard requirement. For Kuma, verify the exact integration path before committing to automation that expects REST endpoints.
- Run a failure test. Stop a test service, block its port, alter a test DNS record, or send a deliberately late push. Confirm detection time, notification delivery, status-page behavior, and recovery messages.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
The monitor goes down with the service
This is the defining self-hosting mistake. Move Kuma to a separate host or site, add an external check, or accept explicitly that the monitor only covers failures outside its own failure domain.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Storage appears healthy until a restart
Confirm that the data volume is persistent and supported. Follow the README’s NFS warning, test a restart, and perform a restore drill before relying on historical data or a large monitor inventory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFast polling creates noisy alerts
A 20-second interval can detect brief failures quickly, but it can also expose transient network loss. Tune alert conditions and maintenance windows around the service’s normal behavior. For public game servers, distinguish a short restart from a sustained outage so players are not trained to ignore notifications.
Planned maintenance looks like an incident
Use maintenance windows where available, pause checks deliberately, and document who can change the schedule. UptimeRobot’s API includes maintenance-window automation; in Kuma, use the application’s documented controls and ensure the procedure is part of your deployment runbook.
A status page reveals more than intended
Decide whether endpoint names, incident details, and response history are public. Use password protection or a private page when the audience is limited, and avoid putting credentials or sensitive infrastructure names into monitor labels and notification text.
Plan limits are treated as permanent specifications
UptimeRobot’s monitor quotas, intervals, status-page entitlements, API behavior, and pricing can change. Recheck the official plan, help-center, and API documentation immediately before publishing a comparison, migrating monitors, or budgeting a paid tier.
Bottom-line decision
For a technically comfortable homelab operator, Uptime Kuma is the more capable and controllable tool: it supports a wider range of checks, advertises 20-second intervals, and can run beside Docker and game-server infrastructure. Its price is operational responsibility, and its usefulness depends on placing it outside the failures you want it to report.
For a small site, side project, or team that wants monitoring without server administration, UptimeRobot is the simpler choice. The cited Free plan provides up to 50 monitors at five-minute intervals, and the documented v3 REST API is a strong fit for automation. Accept the hosted service’s plan limits and vendor dependency, verify current entitlements, and choose the product whose failure domain and maintenance model match your environment.
