To add tabs in Elementor, open a WordPress page in the Elementor editor, drag the Tabs widget from the widget panel onto the canvas, and edit each tab’s title and content in the Content panel. Use Add Item for more tabs, then adjust orientation, alignment, styling, spacing, and responsive behavior before previewing and publishing. What Elementor tabs do
Tabs divide related information into separate panels that share one set of clickable titles. A visitor selects a title, and Elementor displays that tab’s content without requiring a separate page load. Tabs are useful when several short sections belong together, such as game system requirements, platform details, controls, downloadable files, or frequently consulted instructions. They keep a page shorter, but they also hide content behind a click. Put the most important information in the first tab and use clear, specific titles so visitors understand what each panel contains.
What you need before starting
- A WordPress site with Elementor installed and activated.
- An existing page to edit, or permission to create a new page.
- Access to the Elementor editor for that page.
- Your tab titles and panel content prepared in advance, especially if you are moving a long page into a tab layout.
Elementor is distributed as a free commercial WordPress plugin. You can install it from WordPress’s built-in plugin installer or upload the plugin package, as described in its WordPress.org listing. Elementor’s developer documentation also states that “Elementor Core is a free WordPress plugin.” The basic Tabs widget appears in Elementor’s free widget list, so a Pro license is not universally required just to create ordinary tabs. A particular nested layout, template feature, or other advanced capability can have different plan requirements; verify the current plan matrix before committing to one.

Choose the right tab implementation
Elementor provides a standard Tabs widget and a nested Tabs approach. Decide between them before building so you do not have to recreate the content later.

The standard widget is faster when every panel is essentially a block of text. Choose nested Tabs when a panel must contain several independent Elementor elements or a custom arrangement. Nested Tabs are documented in Elementor’s Tabs with nested containers guide.

1. Open the page in Elementor
- In WordPress, open the page you want to change, or create a new page.
- Launch the Elementor editor for that page.
- Decide where the tab group belongs. Leave enough surrounding space for the tab titles and the largest panel, rather than sizing the section only for the currently visible content.
2. Place the widget
- Click the plus or add control to display Elementor’s widgets.
- Find Tabs in the widget panel.
- Drag the widget onto the intended section or container on the canvas. In editor experiences that use the term element, select the Tabs element instead.
After placement, Elementor displays a default tab group. The widget itself is the parent layout; the individual entries are the tab items you will edit next.
3. Edit the first tab
- With the widget selected, open the Content panel.
- Select the first tab item.
- Replace the default tab title with a concise label that describes the panel.
- Enter or paste the panel’s content in the item’s content area.
Keep labels parallel. For example, a group might use “PC,” “PlayStation,” “Xbox,” and “Switch,” or “Overview,” “Controls,” “Settings,” and “Troubleshooting.” Avoid labels that are so short that their meaning depends on surrounding copy.

4. Add, remove, and reorder tabs
- Click Add Item to create another tab.
- Give the new item its own title and content.
- Use the item’s remove control when a panel is no longer needed.
- Reorder items in the Content panel when the reading order changes. Put the panel most visitors need first.
Each item has its own title and content. Changing one item does not automatically update the others, so check every panel after pasting or rearranging material.
5. Set orientation and alignment
Where the selected editor experience exposes the option, choose a horizontal or vertical direction. Horizontal tabs place the titles in a row and work well for a small number of short labels. Vertical tabs place titles in a column and can be easier to scan when labels are longer or when the group sits beside another content area. Set the alignment so the title row or column sits consistently within its container.
6. Style the tab group
Open the Style panel to adjust the visual treatment available in your editor. Typical controls include colors, typography, borders, and spacing. Style the normal, active, and hover states distinctly enough that a visitor can tell which panel is open. Keep the active state consistent with the site’s other interactive controls.
Use the Advanced panel for the spacing and responsive controls exposed by your installation. Change padding and margins carefully: excessive spacing can push the panel far below the titles, while too little space can make labels and content look crowded. If your theme adds its own styles, preview the page rather than relying only on the editor canvas.

7. Preview, save, and publish
- Use Elementor’s preview controls to inspect the page at desktop and mobile widths.
- Activate every tab title in the preview and confirm that the expected panel appears.
- Check the longest title, the largest panel, images, buttons, and any links inside the content.
- Save your changes, then publish the page or update the existing page.
- Open the public URL in a separate browser view and test the tab triggers again. The editor preview and the published page can be affected differently by theme or cache styling.
How to put Elementor widgets inside a tab
The standard Tabs widget is intended for text or basic content. To build a panel from several Elementor components, use nested Tabs. Elementor’s nested documentation describes placing widgets and containers inside each tab, including headings, icon boxes, countdowns, images, buttons, and other Elementor elements.
Activate nested-elements support when required
Nested layouts may require the nested-elements capability to be activated in the editor. If the widget does not offer an inner canvas or container controls, check Elementor’s current nested-elements setting and enable it before rebuilding the tab group. The exact location and label can vary with the editor version, so use the current nested Tabs documentation rather than relying on an older menu path.

- Add the Tabs widget as described above, or open an existing nested Tabs group.
- Select the tab item you want to design.
- Click into that tab’s inner container or content area.
- Drag the required Elementor widgets into the inner area. Add a heading first if the panel needs a visible subheading, then add images, icon boxes, buttons, or other elements in the order visitors should read them.
- Configure each child widget independently. Its typography, spacing, link, and media settings belong to that widget, not to the parent tab title.
- Repeat for the other tabs and preview the complete group at both desktop and mobile widths.
Nested tabs are more flexible but also introduce more points to check. A change to the parent width can affect every inner container, and a large image or button row can make one panel much taller than the others. Design each panel deliberately instead of assuming that identical content lengths will produce identical heights.
Make tabs become an accordion on mobile
Elementor’s nested Tabs documentation includes a responsive breakpoint option that lets tabs display as an accordion below a chosen width. This is useful when a horizontal row of titles would wrap or become difficult to tap on a narrow screen.

- Select the nested Tabs widget.
- Open its responsive or breakpoint controls.
- Choose the breakpoint at which the presentation should switch from tabs to an accordion.
- Preview at widths just above and below that breakpoint.
- Confirm that each accordion heading opens the correct content and that the open panel does not overlap neighboring elements.
The breakpoint is a design decision, not a universal value. Choose it based on the actual length of your labels and the available content width. Test an intermediate width as well as the narrowest phone preview; a layout that works at the two endpoints can still fail between them.
If your editor does not expose the accordion breakpoint for the implementation you selected, do not assume that a CSS tweak will provide the same behavior. Check whether the nested-elements capability is enabled and whether the current Elementor version supports the control for that widget.
Horizontal, vertical, or accordion: which layout fits?

Orientation and responsive behavior can be considered separately. A group can be horizontal on a wide desktop, switch to an accordion on a phone, or use a vertical arrangement where the editor and breakpoint controls support that combination.

Plan requirements become relevant when your design depends on another feature, a particular template workflow, or an advanced capability not included in the free set. Nested Tabs can also depend on the nested-elements capability being available and activated. Before upgrading, identify the exact control you need and compare it with Elementor’s current pricing and plan information. Plan names, included features, and editor capabilities can change, so treat the current matrix as authoritative rather than an old tutorial.
Content and usability decisions that prevent common tab problems
Use one clear purpose per group
Group panels that answer the same question. A “Platforms” group can contain one panel per platform; mixing platforms, pricing, and unrelated announcements in the same group forces visitors to guess what each label means.
Keep titles short but explicit
Titles are navigation controls, not paragraphs. “PC requirements” communicates more than “PC,” while still fitting a typical title row. If a title must be long to make sense, that is a signal to test a vertical layout or mobile accordion.
Do not hide essential information by default
Place critical instructions, warnings, or primary calls to action outside the tabs or in the first visible panel when appropriate. Tabs are best for related optional detail, not for information every visitor must see before continuing.
Keep panel structures consistent
When several tabs represent comparable items, use the same order inside each panel. For example, put the platform name, requirements, controls, and notes in the same positions. Consistency lets visitors compare panels without relearning the layout.
Check links and media in every item
Nested widgets can contain buttons, images, and other linked elements. Test each one on the published page, not only in the editor. Confirm that images remain readable at narrow widths and that a button does not extend beyond its container.

Troubleshooting Elementor tabs

Pre-publish checklist
- Every tab has a descriptive title and the intended content.
- The first tab contains the information visitors should encounter first.
- Additional items are in a logical order, with no unused default entries.
- The chosen horizontal or vertical direction fits the available width.
- Normal, active, and hover states are visually distinguishable.
- Nested widgets, images, buttons, and links work in every panel.
- The group has been tested at desktop, mobile, and an intermediate width.
- If mobile accordion behavior is used, the breakpoint has been tested on both sides.
- The saved or published page has been opened outside the editor and each trigger has been activated.
Quick decision guide
- Choose standard Tabs for text or basic content that needs a compact presentation.
- Choose nested Tabs when a panel needs multiple Elementor widgets or containers.
- Choose horizontal orientation for a few short labels with ample width.
- Choose vertical orientation when labels are longer or a side-by-side layout is clearer.
