The safest way to speed up vBulletin is to optimize in layers: run a supported PHP/MySQL stack with opcode caching, tune vBulletin’s own datastore and post caches, reduce unnecessary counter writes, choose the right search engine, then address measured database and static-asset bottlenecks. Establish a baseline before each change and re-test afterward; vBulletin’s documentation does not promise a universal percentage improvement.

Start with a supported runtime
Performance work cannot compensate for an unsupported or outdated platform. The vBulletin manual lists PHP 7.1.0 and MySQL 5.5.8 as minimum requirements. For a better-supported baseline, it recommends PHP 7.3 or newer, MySQL 8 or newer, the MySQLi driver, and an opcode cache.

Every request passes through PHP, the database, or both. A compatible PHP release lets vBulletin execute its code reliably and use a maintained opcode-cache implementation. A current MySQL release provides the optimizer, indexing behavior, and buffer facilities expected by modern workloads. Confirm the versions actually used by the web workers and the forum’s database connection, not only the versions installed on the server.
Enable an opcode cache
An opcode cache pre-parses PHP files and keeps commonly used data in memory, so requests do not repeatedly compile the same scripts. The vBulletin manual describes this as a significant performance improvement. Treat it as a baseline capability rather than a replacement for query or cache tuning.

- Verify that the cache is enabled for the PHP service handling web requests; command-line PHP can use a different configuration.
- After PHP upgrades or code deployments, confirm that stale compiled files are invalidated and rebuilt.
- Watch PHP worker saturation and response time after enabling it. A full or incorrectly configured cache can create churn instead of stable hits.
Measure before changing settings
Optimization is most reliable when each change has a measured before-and-after comparison. Record a representative busy period and a quiet period so that traffic mix does not make a change look better or worse than it is.
Baseline checklist
- Record page response time for the forum home page, a busy thread, posting, and search.
- Measure PHP worker utilization, queueing, and saturation.
- Measure database latency, connection pressure, CPU, memory, and disk I/O.
- Capture slow-query samples and the execution plans for the most expensive queries.
- Record hit rates for any opcode, datastore, memory, or page-level caches already in use.
- Note search index size, indexing duration, and the time required to complete a typical search.
Keep a change log with the setting, time, traffic conditions, and rollback action. Do not claim a fixed speedup from a configuration change unless you have a controlled comparison on your installation.

Tune vBulletin’s datastore and content caches
vBulletin exposes several cache mechanisms. Its configuration supports database, memory, and Memcache cache classes, while datastore options include file cache, APC, XCache, and Memcached. The best choice depends on the memory available, whether you have one server or several, and how much invalidation complexity you can operate.
Choose a cache class for the bottleneck

Do not enable every cache class indiscriminately. Select one design, check hit and eviction rates, and ensure cache storage has enough headroom. A cache that constantly evicts hot entries adds work without delivering stable latency.
Use cached posts when storage is available
vBulletin can parse posts when they are submitted and store the resulting display HTML. Rendering a topic can then reuse that prepared output instead of repeatedly parsing every post. This improves read performance at the cost of additional storage and invalidation work when a post, template, or formatting rule changes.

- Favor cached posts on read-heavy forums with sufficient disk capacity.
- Monitor storage growth and cache rebuild activity after template or parser changes.
- Expect edits and moderation actions to invalidate or regenerate affected output; test those paths before enabling aggressive caching on a busy board.
Do not disable content caching as a routine fix
The vBulletin manual states that setting the relevant option to disable content caching is intended for troubleshooting, not normal operation. If caching appears incorrect, identify stale entries, invalidation failures, or insufficient cache capacity instead of leaving content caching off.

Reduce write amplification from view counters
Every page view can create a write if thread-view or attachment-view counters are updated immediately. On a small forum that cost may be negligible; on a busy board, constant counter writes compete with posts, moderation actions, and other database work.
Batch thread-view updates
In vBulletin’s server and optimization settings, disable immediate thread-view updates for larger or busier forums so views can be accumulated and written in batches. This trades perfectly real-time counts for fewer write operations and less lock contention. Decide whether the display can tolerate a short delay, then verify that the scheduled or batched update mechanism is running.
Batch attachment-view updates when necessary
Attachment counters can create the same pattern. If attachment traffic is high, use the documented batched behavior rather than writing every view synchronously. Check reported counts after the change and document the expected update delay for moderators and administrators.
Choose and maintain the search implementation
Search is a distinct workload: it reads indexes, consumes CPU and memory, and can become expensive even when ordinary topic pages are fast. vBulletin documents an indexed database search and Sphinx Search. Choose based on board size, query volume, available operational support, and whether search competes with transactional database traffic.

Plan the required reindex
Changing the search implementation requires rebuilding the index. On a large board, reindexing can take a long time and consume substantial database or disk resources. Schedule the change and rebuild during a maintenance window, announce any expected search interruption, and confirm that new posts become searchable after the rebuild completes.
- Measure current search latency, query volume, and index size.
- Select DB Search or Sphinx according to the workload and the services you can operate reliably.
- Back up the database and record the current search configuration.
- Switch the implementation in the vBulletin search settings.
- Start the full index rebuild during a low-traffic maintenance period.
- Check completion, test common queries, and verify that newly created and edited posts are indexed.
Optimize large imports safely
Bulk imports stress full-text indexing, PHP memory, database writes, and output generation at the same time. vBulletin’s official guidance says that dropping the post full-text index before an import and adding it afterward can speed up the post module considerably.
Import sequence
- Take a verified database backup and confirm that you can restore it.
- Plan a maintenance window long enough for the import and the later index build.
- Follow vBulletin’s documented procedure to drop the post full-text index before importing.
- Run the import with display output limited to what the process needs; excessive output increases processing and memory overhead.
- Allow for PHP array memory overhead when setting the import environment. The data volume is not the same as the peak memory required to represent it.
- Re-create the post full-text index after the import and monitor the build until it completes.
- Test posting, search, pagination, and a sample of imported threads before reopening the forum.
Do not use this procedure for routine single-post activity. It is an operational tactic for a planned bulk load, and the index is unavailable or incomplete until the rebuild finishes.
Investigate MySQL queries and indexes before global tuning
MySQL performance depends on the tables, queries, server configuration, and whether the right indexes exist. Increasing a global buffer without inspecting the workload can waste memory or hide the actual problem.
Find the expensive statements
- Collect slow-query samples during real forum traffic rather than relying on one isolated request.
- Inspect execution plans for statements that scan many rows, sort large result sets, or wait on locks.
- Check whether predicates, joins, and ordering columns are supported by appropriate indexes.
- Look for application patterns that issue many small queries where one bounded query would do.
Apply schema or query changes one at a time, then compare latency and resource use with the baseline. An index can accelerate reads while increasing insert, edit, and delete cost, so evaluate write-heavy pages as well as topic views.

Use buffers and caches with measured capacity
MySQL’s buffering documentation describes memory buffers and caching as performance mechanisms. Allocate them only after accounting for the database process, PHP workers, the operating system, and any Memcached or search service on the same host. Excessive allocation can cause swapping, which is typically worse than a smaller cache that remains in RAM.
- Watch memory pressure and swap activity after changing buffer sizes.
- Compare cache hit behavior with disk I/O and query latency.
- Keep separate capacity budgets when web, database, search, and cache services share a machine.
Deliver static assets through a CDN
A CDN will not make PHP execution or MySQL queries faster, but it can reduce origin bandwidth and latency for cacheable static files. A vBulletin 6 integration guide identifies these paths for caching:

Prepare the origin and purge rules
- Back up forum files and the database before changing delivery or server optimization settings.
- Configure the CDN to cache only the documented static paths, leaving dynamic forum, login, posting, and moderation responses at the origin.
- Define how a CSS, JavaScript, or image change purges the corresponding cached objects.
- Test anonymous pages, authenticated pages, attachments, and cache-control headers from more than one location.
- Confirm that a purge or versioned asset change reaches users before declaring the rollout complete.
Incorrect CDN rules can serve stale assets or, worse, cache personalized content. Keep the scope narrow until headers and purge behavior are proven.

The following order limits risk and makes regressions easier to attribute:
- Baseline: record response times, PHP saturation, database latency, cache hit rates, and slow queries.
- Runtime: verify PHP 7.1.0 and MySQL 5.5.8 minimum compatibility, then target the recommended PHP 7.3+ and MySQL 8+ baseline where the vBulletin version and extensions support it; use MySQLi and enable opcode caching.
- Application caches: review datastore and cached-post settings, balancing read latency against RAM, disk, and invalidation cost.
- Write reduction: batch thread and attachment view counters on busy installations.
- Search: select DB Search or Sphinx and rebuild indexes in a maintenance window.
- Database: inspect slow queries, execution plans, indexes, and memory buffers together.
- Static delivery: add CDN caching for the documented JavaScript, CSS, and image paths after backups and purge rules are ready.
- Re-measure: repeat the same tests and retain the change log; roll back any setting that increases error rates, queueing, or resource pressure.
Diagnose by symptom
Topic pages are slow but search is normal
Check PHP worker saturation, opcode-cache hits, post-cache behavior, datastore latency, and template or parser work. If database reads dominate, inspect the slow-query samples and indexes before changing cache sizes.

Posting is slow while reading is fast
Look for write amplification from immediate thread or attachment counters, lock waits, full-text index maintenance, and database disk I/O. Batching counters helps only when those writes are part of the measured bottleneck.
Only search is slow
Measure index size, query patterns, and indexing freshness. Compare the operational fit of indexed DB Search and Sphinx; a search-engine change is not complete until its full reindex and post-rebuild tests succeed.

Check static asset transfer time and cache status. A CDN can help with the documented JavaScript, CSS, and image paths, but it cannot remove server-side PHP or database latency.
Performance worsened after enabling a cache
Inspect hit rate, eviction rate, memory pressure, stale-data behavior, and invalidation failures. A cache that competes with PHP or MySQL for RAM may need a smaller capacity, a different cache class, or removal if measurements show no benefit.
What to verify after every change
- Anonymous thread viewing and logged-in viewing.
- Posting, editing, moderation, and attachment access.
- Search for common terms and newly created content.
- Cache invalidation after template, style, parser, or image changes.
- Database errors, PHP errors, queueing, lock waits, and memory pressure.
- Backup availability and a documented rollback path.
Optimization is complete only when the forum is measurably faster for its limiting workload without making writes, searches, invalidation, or recovery less reliable.
